Book excerpt: The analysis described in this thesis is the search for the Higgs boson, decaying into bb pair, in the associated production with a vector boson, in the extreme Higgs boson transverse momentum region where the Higgs boson is reconstructed using the large-R jet technique. The use of the large-R jets allows to add a part of the phase space unexplored so far, which is particularly sensitive to possible new physics. The analysed data have been collected at LHC by the ATLAS detector between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV. The same dataset has been used to perform the differential pp → ZH and pp → WH cross-section measurements used to extract the information on the Higgs couplings and to put limits on Beyond the Standard Model effects. Furthermore the analysis has been re-used to perform a cross-section measurement of the diboson ZZ and WZ processes because the diboson and the Higgs processes have a similar topology. For the first time the ZZ(bb) and WZ(bb) cross-sections are measured at √s = 13 TeV and the observed cross-section measurements are consistent with the Standard Model predictions.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the stand-alone discovery and measurement of the Higgs boson in its decays to two W bosons using the Run-I ATLAS dataset. This is the most precise measurement of gluon-fusion Higgs boson production and is among the most significant results attained at the LHC. The thesis provides an exceptionally clear exposition on a complicated analysis performed by a large team of researchers. Aspects of the analysis performed by the author are explained in detail; these include new methods for evaluating uncertainties on the jet binning used in the analysis and for estimating the background due to associated production of a W boson and an off-shell photon. The thesis also describes a measurement of the WW cross section, an essential background to Higgs boson production. The primary motivation of the LHC was to prove or disprove the existence of the Higgs boson. In 2012, CERN announced this discovery and the resultant ATLAS publication contained three decay channels: gg, ZZ, and WW.

Book excerpt: The Higgs boson, with a measured mass of approximately $125~GeV$, has been studied extensively since its discovery in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider. This discovery opens the question of whether the Higgs boson of the Standard Model (SM) is the only scalar particle of Nature or it belongs to a larger scalar sector, as predicted in many Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) theories. Therefore, observation of charged Higgs bosons would indicate new physics. This thesis presents results of a search for a charged Higgs boson in the mass range $80~GeV$ to $3~TeV$, through tau-lepton final states. The search is performed using proton-proton collisions data at $\sqrt{s}=13~\mbox{TeV}$, collected with the ATLAS experiment, during 2015 to 2018. The final results are interpreted in the context of the Minimal SuperSymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) benchmark scenarios. In these scenarios, charged Higgs bosons coupling to tau-lepton are enhanced for some parts of the search phase space, thus increasing the chance of their discovery. No significant excess of events above the expected background from the Standard Model processes is observed. Therefore, upper limits on the charged Higgs boson production cross section times its branching ratio to tau-lepton and its associated neutrino are set at a 95\% Confidence Level. The results are also interpreted in the context of the hMSSM and $m^{mod -}_{h}$ benchmark scenarios of the MSSM. Due to the enhancement of the charged Higgs boson coupling to tau-leptons at high values of the $\tan\beta$ parameter of the MSSM, it is possible to exclude the high $\tan\beta$ region in the $M_{H^{\pm}}$--$\tan\beta$ parameter space. In this work, $\tan\beta$ values around 60 are excluded up to a charged Higgs boson mass of $1400~\GeV$. Furthermore, in the low mass region, below $170~GeV$, all values of $\tan\beta$ in range 1--60 are excluded at 95\% confidence level.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the search for the dark sector process h -> Zd Zd -> 4l in events collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015--2018. In this theorized process, the Standard Model Higgs boson (h) decays to four leptons via two intermediate Beyond-the-Standard-Model particles each called Zd. This process arises from interactions of the Standard Model with a dark sector. A dark sector consists of one or more new particles that have limited or zero interaction with the Standard Model, such as the new vector boson Zd (dark photon). It could have a rich and interesting phenomenology like the visible sector (the Standard Model) and could naturally address many outstanding problems in particle physics. For example, it could contain a particle candidate for dark matter. In particular, Higgs decays to Beyond-the-Standard-Model particles are well-motivated theoretically and are not tightly constrained; current measurements of Standard Model Higgs properties permit the fraction of such decays to be as high as approximately 30%. The results of this search do not show evidence for the existence of the h -> Zd Zd -> 4l process and are therefore interpreted in terms of upper limits on the branching ratio B(h -> Zd Zd) and the effective Higgs mixing parameter kappa^prime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precision measurements of the Higgs boson’s properties are a powerful tool to look for deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. The 139/fb of proton-proton collision data which have been collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the LHC, offer an opportunity to investigate rare Higgs-boson topologies, which are particularly sensitive to new physics scenarios but experimentally difficult to access. Several such measurements, which target Higgs-boson decays to heavy-flavour quarks, as well as their combinations are presented in this thesis. A novel analysis that measures Higgs-boson production in association with a heavy vector boson V (VH, with V=W,Z) at high energies is presented. Dedicated Higgs-boson reconstruction techniques are applied to reconstruct the highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs-boson decays into pairs of bottom quarks. The measurement is subsequently combined with a VH cross-section measurement at low and intermediate pT(V) to provide a differential cross-section measurement in kinematic fiducial volumes over the largest possible pT(V) range. All cross-section measurements agree with the SM predictions within relative uncertainties that range from 30% to 300%. The results are furthermore interpreted as limits on the parameters of a SM effective field theory. Finally, a combination of measurements of Higgs decays to heavy-flavour quarks is used to experimentally determine that the Higgs-boson coupling to charm quarks is weaker than to bottom quarks, as predicted by the SM. The target audience for the thesis are physicists and physics students, in particular those with a background in high energy physics.

Book excerpt: This book explores the Higgs boson and its interactions with fermions, as well as the detector technologies used to measure it. The Standard Model of Particle Physics has been a groundbreaking theory in our understanding of the fundamental properties of the universe, but it is incomplete, and there are significant hints which require new physics. The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 was a substantial confirmation of the Standard Model, but many of its decay modes remain elusive. This book presents the latest search for Higgs boson decays into c-quarks using a proton-proton collision dataset collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This decay mode has yet to be observed and requires advanced machine learning algorithms to identify c-quarks in the experiment. The results provide an upper limit on the rate of Higgs boson decays to c-quarks and a direct measurement of the Higgs boson coupling strength to c-quarks. The book also discusses the future of particle physics and the need for significant improvements to the detector to cope with increased radiation damage and higher data rates at the High-Luminosity LHC. It presents the characterization of the ATLAS pixel detector readout chip for the inner detector upgrade (ITk). The chip was subjected to irradiations using X-rays and protons to simulate the radiation environment at the HL-LHC. The tests showed that all readout chip components, including the digital logic and analogue front-end, are sufficiently radiation-tolerant to withstand the expected radiation dose. Finally, this book describes monolithic pixel detectors as a possible technology for future pixel detectors. This book is ideal for individuals interested in exploring particle physics, the Higgs boson, and the development of silicon pixel detectors.

Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: Searches for charged Higgs bosons decaying to a tau lepton and a neutrino in fully hadronic final states are presented in this thesis. The analyses are based on 4.6fb^-1 and 19.5fb^-1 of proton-proton collision data taken with the ATLAS detector at the LHC at center-of-mass energies of 7TeV and 8TeV in 2011 and 2012, respectively.Charged Higgs bosons with masses less than the top quark mass are searched for in events consistent with top-quark pair production and charged Higgs bosons with masses greater than the top quark mass are searched for in associated production with a top quark. In the search based on data taken in 2011, all background contributions are estimated in data-driven ways. Only a minor background contribution is estimated using simulation in the searches based on data taken in 2012; all dominant background contributions are estimated using data-driven methods here as well. An embedding method is used in all searches to assess the dominant and irreducible background contributions containing true hadronically decaying tau leptons and described in detail in this thesis. No significant excess of the data compared to the background expectations due to Standard Model processes is observed. Statistical analyses lead to 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching ratios B(t->bH^±)xB(H^±->tau^± nu) between 0.23% and 1.3% for charged Higgs boson masses between 80GeV and 160GeV and on the production cross section times branching ratio, sigma(pp->tH^±+X)xB(H^±->tau^± nu) ranging from 0.76pb to 4.5fb for charged Higgs boson masses between 180GeV and 1000GeV. The branching ratio and cross section limits are used to derive constraints on the parameter space of minimal supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model in various benchmark scenarios. These limits are the so far strictest limits set by the ATLAS collaboration in the search for charged Higgs bosons in fully hadronic final states

Book excerpt: The theoretical foundations of the Standard Model of elementary particles relies on the existence of the Higgs boson, a particle which has been revealed for the first time by the experiments run at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012. As the Higgs boson is an unstable particle, its search strategies were based on its decay products. In this thesis, Francesco Pandolfi conducted a search for the Higgs boson in the H → ZZ → l + l - qq Decay Channel with 4.6 fb -1 of 7 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The presence of jets in the final state poses a series of challenges to the experimenter: both from a technical point of view, as jets are complex objects and necessitate of ad-hoc reconstruction techniques, and from an analytical one, as backgrounds with jets are copious at hadron colliders, therefore analyses must obtain high degrees of background rejection in order to achieve competitive sensitivity. This is accomplished by following two directives: the use of an angular likelihood discriminant, capable of discriminating events likely to originate from the decay of a scalar boson from non-resonant backgrounds, and by using jet parton flavor tagging, selecting jets compatible with quark hadronization and discarding jets more likely to be initiated by gluons. The events passing the selection requirements in 4.6 fb -1 of data collected by the CMS detector are examined, in the search of a possible signal compatible with the decay of a heavy Higgs boson. The thesis describes the statistical tools and the results of this analysis. This work is a paradigm for studies of the Higgs boson with final states with jets. The non-expert physicists will enjoy a complete and eminently readable description of a proton-proton collider analysis. At the same time, the expert reader will learn the details of the searches done with jets at CMS.

Book excerpt: The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector has successfully operated with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collisions since 2010, leading to the Higgs boson discovery in 2012 by the CMS and ATLAS collaborations. The analyses of data taken during Run 2 (2016-2018) has already led to many interesting results about the properties of the Higgs boson and for the most part they are compatible in the context of the standard model (SM) so far. These studies are important because the SM appears to be an approximation of a more general theory. Precise studies of the Higgs boson's interactions with the known matter and force particles are essential to reveal the microscopic deviations from the SM prediction. One of such interactions is Yukawa couplings of the Higgs boson and fermions. The H → [tau tau] decay is the most sensitive fermionic decay mode that allows direct probing of this interaction. This thesis presents a study of the Higgs boson properties by observing its decay to a pair of tau leptons and testing evidence of non-SM interactions in the Higgs boson production. The results exploit the data collected by the CMS detector during LHC Run-2, in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Firstly, the Higgs bosons' properties were explored by two complementary approaches by measuring its cross sections. Thanks to the observation of the H → [tau tau] decay in 2016, we can measure the total cross section with higher precision. Furthermore, in the first analysis, the cross sections of different Higgs productions were scrutinized using fine selections within each Higgs production mode which are mutually exclusive using the Simplified Template Cross Section (STXS) framework, proposed by the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. In the second analysis, the first-ever measurement of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections for the Higgs boson production decaying to a pair of tau leptons was presented. In the third analysis, a search for anomalous couplings in the Higgs production vertex, including Charge-Parity (CP) violating couplings, is also performed targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion in association with two jets and vector boson fusion. None of these analyses has found any hint of new physics beyond the SM, but stringent limits on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to data were set and cross sections of the Higgs bosons in smaller phase spaces were precisely measured.

Book excerpt: This Thesis describes the first measurement of, and constraints on, Higgs boson production in the vector boson fusion mode, where the Higgs decays to b quarks (the most common decay channel), at the LHC. The vector boson fusion mode, in which the Higgs is produced simultaneously with a pair of quark jets, provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the detailed properties of the Higgs, including the possibility of parity and CP violation, as well as its couplings and mass. It thus opens up this new field of study for precision investigation as the LHC increases in energy and intensity, leading the way to this new and exciting arena of precision Higgs research.

Leon Lederman embraces this spirit of inquiry as he moves from the Greeks' earliest scientific observations to Einstein and beyond to chart this unique arm of scientific study. His survey concludes with the Higgs boson, nicknamed the God Particle, which scientists hypothesize will help unlock the last secrets of the subatomic universe, quarks and all--it's the dogged pursuit of this almost mystical entity that inspires Lederman's witty and accessible history.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a 5.5 standard deviation observation of the Higgs boson decaying to fermions using the data collected at the LHC at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy. The studied dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 inverse femtobarns. The best fit signal strength for the H to tau tau process is measured to be mu = 1.24 ^{+0.29}/{-0.27}, consistent with standard model predictions. Unique event categories are used targeting the leading Higgs boson production processes, gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production. This provides signal regions sensitive to Higgs boson couplings to both fermions and vector bosons. These two Higgs boson couplings are measured and are consistent with standard model predictions within one standard deviation. This 5.5 standard deviation observation of the H to tau tau process and the consistency of the Higgs boson couplings with the standard model provide confirmation of the Higgs boson Yukawa couplings to fermions. This is evidence that the Higgs field provides mass for the tau lepton in addition to the vector bosons.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we search for the production of the Standard Model Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider, through its decay mode to two W bosons, which each in turn decay into a charged lepton and a neutrino. The Higgs boson is the only elementary particle predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics which has not yet been experimentally observed. The question of its existence has been the subject of a wide body of experimental and theoretical work for the past half-century. Using 4.9 fb-1 of integrated luminosity, this search is expected, on average, to exclude the Standard Model predicted Higgs boson production cross section for masses between 126 GeV/c 2 and 260 GeV/c 2 under the background-only hypothesis. We observe no statistically significant excesses in the data, and we exclude the Standard Model Higgs boson production for masses between 129 GeV/c 2 and 260 GeV/c 2 . This result represents a significant reduction of the mass region in which the Standard Model Higgs boson is allowed to exist.
