Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Scorpion Touching Happiness is the inspiring true story of Avi Halevy of Ashdod, Israel. Avi is a successful entrepreneur with a thriving business, a good marriage and a wonderful family. Just as he feels he has reached his peak, disaster strikes. His teenage son contracts a horribly painful illness, which the medical establishment is powerless to cure, declaring he has no more than three weeks to live. Avi goes against all the odds - and the medical establishment - to fight for his son's life. The ongoing, grueling and painful battle ultimately earns his child seven additional years of life, which he lives to the fullest. At the backdrop is Avi's own poignant story of growing up. With deft insight, the author portrays both comic and tragic episodes from his childhood. His mother's early death and his father's spurning of emotion left Avi with a long, difficult quest to acquire the self-confidence and love that he lacked. The sensitive, passionate man he grew to become had to build the strength needed to pass on to his son for the life and death battle they fought as one.A Scorpion Touching Happiness is a powerfully moving story, reaching out to the boundaries of suffering and hope.

Book Synopsis The Trouble with Pleasure by : Aaron Schuster
Download or read book The Trouble with Pleasure written by Aaron Schuster and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the strange and troublesome relationship to pleasure that defines the human being, drawing on the disparate perspectives of Deleuze and Lacan. Is pleasure a rotten idea, mired in negativity and lack, which should be abandoned in favor of a new concept of desire? Or is desire itself fundamentally a matter of lack, absence, and loss? This is one of the crucial issues dividing the work of Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Lacan, two of the most formidable figures of postwar French thought. Though the encounter with psychoanalysis deeply marked Deleuze's work, we are yet to have a critical account of the very different postures he adopted toward psychoanalysis, and especially Lacanian theory, throughout his career. In The Trouble with Pleasure, Aaron Schuster tackles this tangled relationship head on. The result is neither a Lacanian reading of Deleuze nor a Deleuzian reading of Lacan but rather a systematic and comparative analysis that identifies concerns common to both thinkers and their ultimately incompatible ways of addressing them. Schuster focuses on drive and desire—the strange, convoluted relationship of human beings to the forces that move them from within—“the trouble with pleasure." Along the way, Schuster offers his own engaging and surprising conceptual analyses and inventive examples. In the “Critique of Pure Complaint” he provides a philosophy of complaining, ranging from Freud's theory of neurosis to Spinoza's intellectual complaint of God and the Deleuzian great complaint. Schuster goes on to elaborate, among other things, a theory of love as “mutually compatible symptoms”; an original philosophical history of pleasure, including a hypothetical Heideggerian treatise and a Platonic theory of true pleasure; and an exploration of the 1920s “literature of the death drive,” including Thomas Mann, Italo Svevo, and Blaise Cendrars.

Book Synopsis Embodiment, Expertise, and Ethics in Early Modern Europe by : Marlene L. Eberhart
Download or read book Embodiment, Expertise, and Ethics in Early Modern Europe written by Marlene L. Eberhart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embodiment, Expertise, and Ethics in Early Modern Europe highlights the agency and intentionality of individuals and groups in the making of sensory knowledge from approximately 1500 to 1700. Focused case studies show how artisans, poets, writers, and theologians responded creatively to their environments, filtering the cultural resources at their disposal through the lenses of their own more immediate experiences and concerns. The result was not a single, unified sensory culture, but rather an entangling of micro-cultural dynamics playing out across an archipelago of contexts that dotted the early modern European world—one that saw profound transitions in ways people used sensory knowledge to claim ethical, intellectual, and practical authority.
