Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Run Through Europe I did not even present my letters of introduction, because necessary civilities would consume my time and restrain my freedom. I chose rather to rely upon the best couriers, valets, and cicerones, and to utilize my time, by adopting the most expeditious, the most open and the least fatiguing modes of locomotion, and to trust to my own eyes and reflec tions, dire'cted with focal energy to characteristic objects and events. I could thus go farther and see more, and my im pressions would be deep and lasting, although quickly made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Family Motor Tour Through Europe I am afraid I owe it to nothing but my inborn stubbornness that I did not drop then and there the vexing sport of automobiling. But I perse vered, and by the time I had improved the sparking plugs and the driving gear and was able to make the thing run in what I then thought a tolerable fashion, I found a better car, a steam buggy this time. It looked so easy to handle, so silent, so well behaved at first, that it took me several days to find out that matters were not by any means so perfect as they seemed to be at the demonstration, on the success of which I had placed mv order. Burnt-out boilers, crushed bearings, uncalled-for fireworks from the gasoline tank and other similar peace-disturbing happenings made me return again to the type of internal combustion car, which had become much improved in the meantime. If such continues, I shall not behold Neptune in a pet, and I almost wish for a touch of his wrath. Having seen him in good humor now for so long a time, it would be pleasant to have a little change. Already by my exclusiveness I have built up a kind of wall about myself; I have not been un friendly, still I have not been communicative. I walk the deck alone, till my solitary habits have been remarked, and people avoid me, not wish ing to disturb nie. Everybody is getting acquainted and is taking the measure of the rest. There is a good deal of chattering at the table and elsewhere. Two or three men have shown their souls in complete undress before the whole company by their prattle. I often am impelled to exclaim inwardly: Let not thy tongue lay bare thy Holy of Holies to profane View! I feel like turning away from a person who persists in stripping his soul stark naked in public. Itis worse than bodily nudity. Disgusting the thing becomes when are displayed the running sores of the soul, as the beggar revels in showing his paralyzed limbs and physical deformities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ninety Days Worth of Europe I am to say, in a prefatory note to this work, that I have as great a contempt for books of travel as I ever had, and quite as much for this book as I have for any of the class. I have also to say to the public, that I have no wish that they should buy it, take it out of Loring's Library at two cents a day, or out of the City Library for nothing. Still less do I advise them to read a word in it, by any accident whatever. But I find, that in six months, since I returned from a very happy little dash across Europe, I have had constant occasion to lend to friends the letters which I sent home, or the note-books and scrap-books which I brought home. I am also constantly referring to them myself for the chastening of the imaginative side of my memory, and the stimulating of its drowsy side. It will be much more convenient to recur to these memorials in print than in their original manuscript; and for this private and personal purpose, here on a New-Hampshire hillside, at too high a level to be hot, and too far from men to be interrupted, on this lovely July day, I begin the arrangement for the press of these pages. They are dedicated to that circle of friends who would have been glad to look over them in manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses by Sea and Land: During a Six Months' Trip to Europe As I could, to single out the two dearest faces; several times I thought I was sure it was thine I saw, my precious, only sister, and raised my hand; but when the salutation was returned, and the form thus brought out more distinctly to view - lo! It was another's. Even this little thing made me feel sadder, and when I could no longer be sure I saw you even en masse, nor tell whether you had left the deck of the ship, I soon made the coolness of the air an excuse to go to our state-room, there to wait until I was brave enough to resolve to be cheerful, and enjoy all things that presented, which were lawful and convenient. It closes a series of personal and literary experiences which cannot be renewed, and which I have no belief will be extended. Now, therefore, all that I have done as a traveller detaches itself from my other labors, lies clear behind me as a life by itself, and may be considered with a degree of self-criticism which was scarcely possible while it lay nearer. The brief review which I desire to make, must necessarily be autobiograph ical in its character, and I am aware that this is question able ground. But as I have been specially styled, for so many years and little to my own satisfaction, a traveller or a tourist, and in either character have received praise and blame, equally founded on a misconception of the facts and hopes of my life, I claim the privilege, this once, to set the truth before those who may care to hear it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe: Through a Woman's Eye Now of the little, unpretentious book, whose commission to the reading world we are now executing, it may be said by way of cordial unreserved commendation that it may claim exemption from the above-mentioned faults. There is a certain rapidity of narrative, free-flowing, conversational, elegantly easy way of telling what was experienced, resembling very much what might be familiarly communicated by a cultured lady to a circle of par lor friends chatting leisurely the social hour away. Only it is not gossip. You see at once that every point visited, every noted locality upon which this woman's eyes have fallen, has re ceived just that kind of attention'that has made conspicuous the objects and aspects of things that, out of the multiplicity ofde tails, are most likely to answer the spontaneous prompting of the reader's mind. Here, for example, is the city of Paris, or the Alps, or Florence, or Rome, - the details of daily observation are infinite, and the woman's art consists in instantaneously catching at the events and sights which out of the great throng of impressions, will best secure for herself, and convey to others a vivid realization of the time and place. It is noticeable how this trait runs throughout the entire narrative, giving it a unique charm of its own. We do certainly go with this delightful companion every step of the way. We see what she sees; we share her pleasures, and even her weariness, when by times that is noted, climbing great flights of steps, or clamb ering along the mountain side, or battling with the dizziness of the ocean wave. In order to make things real, so that the mind can walk round the object described, or peer into it, or lay hands upon it, or scale its utmost limits, the writer has wisely deemed that the actual dimensions of things so far as such data are accessible to her, are indispensable to the suc cessful limning of her pictures. In general this narrative is to be commended for so attaching us to the society of this cultured woman during all the varied experiences of a European tour, that we regretfully part company when the narrative is at an end.
