Book excerpt: Reactions are swift in the small and decidedly rural town of Sulphur Springs, Tennessee, when the unmarried high school art teacher announces that she plans to enter a painting in the town's annual Spring Fling Art Show. The title of her painting: A Room Full of Naked Men. It is not the content of the painting that matters as much as what people think the content will be. Family, coworkers, the girls down at the beauty shop, the over amorous editor of the local paper, the school board, and the Baptist preacher are just a few of the people we meet in this witty satire of small-town life. When our heroine, Sara Louise Upshaw, gets embroiled in the controversy surrounding her painting, she also manages to get acquainted with the handsome owner of the only place in town that sells "flesh" colored paint as love catches her off guard! A senile matron, five naked men running around town, a high society party that ends in a fistfight, a truckload of chickens, and the local doughnut shop are all elements in a story that shows that gossips and busybodies still hold sway in America today!

Book excerpt: If you accept my claim - implausible as it might seem to some - that I wasn't attracted to sport by the hope of seeing naked men, what was it that got me in? Well, originally it was Jaffas and soft drink. Debbie grew up in a family where sport was king: from babyhood Debbie accompanied her father to their weekly religious attendance of the rugby league match of the day at the Sydney Cricket Ground; by primary school she was gleefully sharing her grandfather's obsession with horseracing; and in high school she became a qualified cricket umpire and acquired a rugby league coaching certificate. Did someone mention sports mad? The 2GB Sports Talent Search kick-started her career as a sports journalist and just four months after this, she was on her way to the Los Angeles Olympics as a commentator for ABC radio. With funny and fascinating tales of sports media, athletes and officials, Debbie takes us behind the scenes at Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and into individual sports - athletics, basketball, cricket and rugby league. Best known both as sideline reporter on ABC-TV's rugby league and for her role as Sportsbitch in the iconic 'Live and Sweaty' where sports met comedy, here is a woman who knows her sport. In this entertaining slice of life, irresistible to all sports-mad readers, Debbie shares an extraordinary range of incredible sporting moments. Where Do You Think You're Goin', Lady? is a book for anyone who's ever dreamed of picking up a microphone.

The duty falls upon the king's son, Kahr Morghiad of House Sete'an, to restore the city's strength and the army's purpose. In his attempts to right these wrongs, he uncovers darker horrors and encounters a woman with forbidden powers - a woman who could be his greatest ally or his greatest threat.

Violet Walker has been hiding. Withdrawn after a terrible car accident, she is worried about going back to her high-pressure job, where she’s expected to project confidence and sleek refinement. Allowing herself a distraction, she’s been watching her sexy neighbor work on his house. But when the shirtless, grinning hunk catches her in the act, Violet is struck by the unmistakable jolt of physical chemistry, a sensation that’s both thrilling and terrifying. Noah Young is used to moving from one construction job to another, never laying a firm foundation. The same goes for the women in his life—until Violet changes all that. His beautiful voyeur embraces his rough edges and shows him a hint of real love. But even Noah can tell that she’s holding back, hiding her body and her heart from what they both truly want. Book excerpt: In this provocative book, Margaret Heffernan, former CEO and Fast Company contributor, fuses her own experience with that of hundreds of women to identify the biggest challenges and the best solutions that women face today. From VPs of Fortune 100 companies to entrepreneurs to women just starting their careers, she traces the patterns and themes underlying women's power, choices, love, sex, money, and many other vital topics for working women. Without sugar-coating the facts, preaching, or oversimplifying, she offers solutions and shares the truth about the working world: women's choices are limited, you can't have it all, women do work differently from men and, yes, it is possible to find success amidst all of this and feel good about it. "Finally! A book that exposes the masculine myths about what it takes to be effective in business and helps women reclaim the relational intelligence we have been taught to ignore. A must-read for all women who want to increase their power and influence in the workplace—especially those who are thinking of leaving because they are tired of the corporate gamesmanship that requires splitting themselves into a 'work me' and a 'home me.'" —Joyce K. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Game of Thrones, one of the hottest series on television, leaves hundreds of critics divided on how "feminist" the show really is. Certainly the female characters, strong and weak, embody a variety of archetypes--widow queens, warrior women, damsels in distress, career women, priestesses, crones, mothers and maidens. However, the problem is that most of them play a single role without nuance--even the "strong women" have little to do besides strut about as one-note characters. This book analyzes the women and their portrayals one by one, along with their historical inspirations. Accompanying issues in television studies also appear, from the male gaze to depiction of race. How these characters are treated in the series and how they treat themselves becomes central, as many strip for the pleasure of men or are sacrificed as pawns. Some nude scenes or moments of male violence are fetishized and filmed to tantalize, while others show the women's trauma and attempt to identify with the scene's female perspective. The key is whether the characters break out of their traditional roles and become multidimensional.

Book excerpt: The book Lady Astronauts, Lady Engineers, and Naked Ladies is a gender history of the American space community and by extension a social history of American society in the twentieth century during the Cold War. In order to expand and differentiate the prevalent postwar narrative about gender relations and cultural structures in the United States, the book analyzes several different groups of women interacting in different social spaces within the space community. It therewith grants insight into the several layers of female participation and agency in the community and the gender and race based obstacles and hurdles the female (prospective) astronauts, scientists, engineers, artists, administrators, writers, hostesses, secretaries, and wives were faced with at NASA and in the space industry. In each chapter a different social space within the space community is analyzed. The spaces where the women lived and worked are researched from a media, individual, and institutional angle, ultimately revealing the differing gender philosophies communicated in the public sphere and the space community workplaces by government and space community officials. While women were publicly encouraged to participate in the American space effort to beat the Soviet Union in the race to the moon, women had to deal with gender based barriers which were integral to the structures of the space community; just as they were an intrinsic component of all societal structures in the United States in the 1960s. The female space workers, who were often perceived as disrupters of the prevalent social order in the space community and discriminated by some of their male colleagues and bosses on a personal basis, still managed to assert themselves. They molded pockets of agency in the space community workspaces without the facilitation of regulations on the part of NASA that might have provided them with easier access or more agency. Thus, the space community, a place of technological innovation, was not necessarily also a place of social innovation, but a community with a government agency at its center that mainly mirrored the current (changing) social order, conventions, and policies in the 1960s as well as in the 1970s and 1980s. Nevertheless, the women presented in this book were instrumental in advancing and consolidating the social transformation that happened within the space community and the United States and therefore make intriguing subjects of research. Thus, this systematic analysis of the connection between gender, space, and the Cold War adds a new dimension to space history as well as expands the discourse in American history about gender relations and the opportunities of women in the twentieth century.
