Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Roman Legend and Other Poems Hour by hour, with skillful pencil, wrought the artist, sad and lone. Day by day, he labored nobly, though to all the world unknown. He was brave, the youthful artist, but his soul grew weak and faint, As he strove to place before him, the fair features of a saint. Worn and weary, he strove vainly, for the touch of Heavenly grace. Till one day, a radiant sunbeam fell upon the upturned face, And the very air was flooded with a presence strangely sweet. For the soul, within the sunbeam, seemed to make the work complete. Swift as thought, the artist's pencil deftly touched the features fair. Night came down, but one bright sunbeam left its soul imprisoned there. And around his dingy garret, gazed the artist, wondering. For the work sublime illumed it, like the palace of a king. And within the artist nature, flamed his first fond love divine. Which bewildered all his senses, as with rare, old, ruby wine; Yearningly, he cried; "I love thee," to the radiant, saintly face, But the never-ceasing answer was a look of Heavenly grace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lays of Ancient Rome Porsena, and the issue of the war with Brennus, were grossly misrepresented. Under these circumstances a wise man will look with great suspicion on the legend which has come down to us. He will perhaps be inclined to regard the princes who are said to have founded the civil and religious institutions of Rome, the son of Mars, and the husband of Egeria, as mere mythological personages, of the same class with Perseus and Ixion. As he draws nearer and nearer to the confines of authentic history, he will become less and less hard of belief. He will admit that the most important parts of the narrative have some foundation in truth. But he will distrust almost all the details, not only because they seldom rest on any solid evidence, but also because he will constantly detect in them, even when they are within the limits of physical possibility, that peculiar character, more easily understood than defined, which distinguishes the creations of the imagination from the realities of the world in which we live. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Night of Pompeii; A Poem: And Lays and Legends There were grandeur, vast dominions, empires in bondage, triumphal processions, unrivalled wealth, magnificent prodigality and profligacy, but no just freedom. Roman citizenship was national pride, not individual prerogative. The ignorant cannot govern though they may tyran nize; and ancient sages and priests were too wise to instruct the multitude, though they valued uninitiated sectaries; for communicated know ledge would supersede the lucrative occupations and mysterious powers of their successors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends, Lyrics and Hymns I have selected from my published poems such as I deemed suited to the object of this little volume. To these I have added a number of new ones, England and Rome, The Prayer of St. Patrick, The Legend of St. Edward and the Irish Cripple, Eveline, and several others, which are now published for the first time. The hymns which appear at the end of the volume are translations from the Roman Vesperal. These translations were undertaken several years ago for the Catholic Psalmist, from which work they are now selected. In attempting them, two conditions were put upon me - viz., that the hymns should be rendered as literally as possible, and that the original metre should be preserved as exactly as the difference of the two languages would allow, in order that the airs assigned to the Latin originals in the Psalmist, might be equally available for the hymns in their English dress, and thus render them useful for novenas and other like functions. In endeavouring to carry out these ideas, I need scarcely say how many minor elegancies of diction, or turns of thought, had to be sacrificed; but, on the other hand, there is not one of the English hymns which cannot be sung to the air to which the corresponding Latin original is set and the utility of this arrangement is sufficiently proved by the fact, that the translations are frequently thus employed by those who find both devotion and pleasure in the use of English hymns, while the satisfaction with which they are used is certainly not lessened in the mind of a pious and sincere Catholic, by the reflection that they are translated, as closely as it is possible to render one language into another, from the authorized songs of the Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Legends About the Apostles, Paul and Peter Abraham Viktor Rydberg, poet historian, and religious philosopher, was born at Jonkoping on December 18, 1828. He was first educated at the school of Jonkoping, and afterwards at the gymnasium of Wexio. In 1848 he became a student in the University of Lund, where he graduated as M.A. A manuscript, a fragment of a novel, happened to fall into the hands of the editor of Goteborg's Handels-ach Sjofartstidning, who then engaged Rydberg to write for his paper, and he filled this post for many years. His contributions comprised a great number of different subjects: political articles, reviews, essays on literary, historical, religious and philosophical topics, accounts of travels, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Legend of Saint Vitalis: And Other Poems These few verses are all that I have been able to do towards realizing one of the dreams of my life, the winning a place, though it were but the 'lowest room, ' among English poets. They have been written at rare intervals during a period of nearly forty years; and I cannot now expect the health, the spirits, or the leisure by which I might accomplish more. My excuse for collecting them is the hope that among them may possibly be found one or two worthy to live. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Springs and Wells, in Greek and Roman Literature, Their Legends and Locations Even the Queen and the King, in the days of fable, were constrained to visit the sources of water supply quite as forcibly as Mahomet was compelled to the Mountain, and, just as, later, the idler at the village pump, or the more aspiring Spa, learned all the news of the neighborhood, so the reader, who leisurely traces the path that meanders by the numerous fountains of the ancient writers and makes the rounds of the Springs of Mythology, becomes the entertained recipient of all the gossip and the family history of that classic band of beings of the brain that the early poets preserved and transmitted to posterity. The gossip at each successive Spring widens the readers circle of acquaintance, and, before the end of the path is reached, there is little of interest in the records of the masters of make-believe that has not been laid before the literary loiterer and absorbed in the most pleasant manner. One of the first of the philosophic tenets likely to present itself to the human mind would be Metempsychosis, and Metamorphosis would follow by natural suggestion. Given the factors of facial resemblance, affection and absence, and the germs of the doctrine would inevitably sprout in some thinking brain. Later, in meditation, fancy and reasoning would find no limit to the guises the vital spirit might assume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends of Ancient Rome: From Livy This selection has been compiled for the use of boys who could make out an easy passage of such an author as Caesar, but would be stopped by long or dimcult sentences. It is hoped that the passages will be found, at any rate in the earlier part of the book, to be of progressive difficulty. The attempt to attain this end has led to the omission of some legends of the kings which could not have been made easy enough without much alteration of the text. As this would have left them not Livy's, but something very inferior, it was thought better to omit them altogether.
