Book Synopsis Review of the Toxicologic and Radiologic Risks to Military Personnel from Exposures to Depleted Uranium During and After Combat by : National Research Council
Download or read book Review of the Toxicologic and Radiologic Risks to Military Personnel from Exposures to Depleted Uranium During and After Combat written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-06-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, the U.S. military has used depleted uranium in munitions and in protective armor on tanks. Depleted uranium is a toxic heavy metal and is weakly radioactive. Concerns have been raised about the adverse health effects from exposure to depleted uranium that is aerosolized during combat. Some think it may be responsible for illnesses in exposed veterans and civilians. These concerns led the Army to commission a book, Depleted Uranium Aerosol Doses and Risks: Summary of U.S. Assessments, referred to as the Capstone Report that evaluates the health risks associated with depleted uranium exposure. This National Research Council book reviews the toxicologic, radiologic, epidemiologic, and toxicokinetic data on depleted uranium, and assesses the Army's estimates of health risks to personnel exposed during and after combat. The book recommends that the Army re-evaluate the basis for some of its predictions about health outcomes at low levels of exposure, but, overall, the Capstone Report was judged to provide a reasonable characterization of the exposure and risks from depleted uranium.

Download or read book Depleted Uranium written by C. Miller Alexandra and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-12-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compilation of published scientific information, including human, animal, cellular, and theoretical studies, Depleted Uranium: Properties, Uses and Health Consequences provides the most current and comprehensive collection of information on depleted uranium health hazards. The editor and her international panel of contributors are clinical and basic researchers at the forefront of toxicology, carcinogenesis, and human epidemiology. They review key findings on DU biological and health effects and comprehensively describe the research progress made during the last 11 years. The book's coverage ranges from cellular malignant transformation and carcinogenesis to animal toxicity and neurotoxicity, and concludes with human medical surveillance studies, uranium measurement methodologies, risk modeling, and environmental modeling. The chapters provide information on cellular and animal studies, in vivo carcinogenesis, risk modeling, uranium measurement methodologies, medical surveillance programs, and environmental monitoring. Focusing on current, peer-reviewed data, this volume is the only available compilation book on the current understanding of the potential health hazards of depleted uranium exposure.

Download or read book Sources, Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation, United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) 2016 Report written by United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and published by United Nations. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Scientific findings underpin radiation risk evaluation and international protection standards. This report comprises a report with two underpinning scientific annexes. The first annex recapitulates and clarifies the philosophy of science as well as the scientific knowledge for attributing observed health effects in individuals and populations to radiation exposure, and distinguishes between that and inferring risk to individuals and populations from an exposure. The second annex reviews the latest thinking and approaches to quantifying the uncertainties in assessments of risk from radiation exposure, and illustrates these approaches with application to examples that are highly pertinent to radiation protection.
