Book excerpt: In light of the power strategies in play in the new geopolitics of economic and ecological globalization, there is need for critical analysis of how the agenda of sustainable development is being conceived, shaped, and implemented. This volume considers issues of equity and development in the US-Mexico border region?and highlights the fact that regions at the juncture of the industrial and developing worlds most clearly illustrate the problems inherent in current economic paradigms. Jane Clough-Riquelme is a regional planner with the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG). Her work focuses on borders planning, including tribal liaison and binational and interregional planning with neighboring jurisdictions. Nora L. Book Synopsis The Social Costs of Industrial Growth in Northern Mexico by : Kathryn Kopinak
Download or read book The Social Costs of Industrial Growth in Northern Mexico written by Kathryn Kopinak and published by Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies University of Cali. This book was released on 2004 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foreign export-processing industry is a global phenomenon, with factories known as maquiladoras in Mexico and Central America. While maquiladoras have gone through second- and third-generation production models, with corresponding research literature from business perspectives, the social analyses of these models and 'Mature Maquilization's' effects on health, the environment, infrastructure, and gender inequalities have not yet been adequately addressed. Kathryn Kopinak's fine edited collection is a long-overdue, welcome addition to this gap in the literature. Drawing together a distinguished and committed group of scholars from North America, The Social Costs of Industrial Growth in Mexico provides careful and methodical knowledge on extensive third-generation social costs, with few benefits for workers' abilities to live healthy lives in which they enjoy fruits of their hard labor.

Book Synopsis Economic and Social Justice by : David A. Shiman
Download or read book Economic and Social Justice written by David A. Shiman and published by Amnesty International. This book was released on 1999 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 10, 1998, the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The U.S. Constitution possesses many of the political and civil rights articulated in the UDHR. The UDHR, however, goes further than the U.S. Constitution, including many social and economic rights as well. This book addresses the social and economic rights found in Articles 16 and 22 through 27 of the UDHR that are generally not recognized as human rights in the United States. The book begins with a brief history of economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as an essay, in question and answer format, that introduces these rights. Although cultural rights are interrelated and of equal importance as economic and social rights, the book primarily addresses justice regarding economic and social problems. After an introduction, the book is divided into the following parts: (1) "Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights Fundamentals"; (2) "Activities"; and (3) "Appendices." The nine activities in part 2 aim to help students further explore and learn about social and economic rights. The appendix contains human rights documents, a glossary of terms, a directory of resource organizations, and a bibliography of 80 web sites, publications and referrals to assist those eager to increase their understanding of, and/or move into action to address economic and social rights.
