Book Synopsis Sustaining Marine Fisheries by : National Research Council
Download or read book Sustaining Marine Fisheries written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-03-19 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuations and declines in marine fish populations have caused growing concern among marine scientists, fisheries managers, commercial and recreational fishers, and the public. Sustaining Marine Fisheries explores the nature of marine ecosystems and the complex interacting factors that shape their productivity. The book documents the condition of marine fisheries today, highlighting species and geographic areas that are under particular stress. Challenges to achieving sustainability are discussed, and shortcomings of existing fisheries management and regulation are examined. The volume calls for fisheries management to adopt a broader ecosystem perspective that encompasses all relevant environmental and human influences. Sustaining Marine Fisheries offers new approaches to building workable fisheries management institutions, improving scientific data, and developing management tools. The book recommends ways to change current practices that encourage overexploitation of fish resources. It will be of special interest to marine policymakers and ecologists, fisheries regulators and managers, fisheries scientists and marine ecologists, fishers, and concerned individuals.
Book Synopsis Management Systems for Riverine Fisheries by : Thayer Scudder
Download or read book Management Systems for Riverine Fisheries written by Thayer Scudder and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1985 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is concerned specifically with the problems of river fisheries and associated management issues. It deals in particular with the scope for building on traditional practices, through the participation of traditional fishing communities, as a means of improving the quality of river fishery management. The paper reviews the most frequently encountered problems of riverine fisheries such as over-fishing due to population pressure or migration, and artifically induced environmental factors such as dams, pollution and deforestation. It lays stress on the importance of studying fishing communities, as well as strictly biological factors, and presents a four-stage analysis of the evolution of traditional riverine fisheries. Several undesirable consequences of this typical evolution, both on the resource itself and on traditional fishing communities, are identified and illustrated by case studies from the Amazon and the Zambesi. Certain types of traditional management strategies are examined and assessed for their future utility. The current ineffectiveness of many existing government river fisheries management policies is noted, either as a result of lack of resources or because they are inappropriate, often rooted in outdated colonial legislation. The lack of both limited access measures and of participation by local fishing communities are highlighted as major deficiencies. The paper concludes by linking these two features as crucial components of durable river management strategies for the future, although other possibilities for management are also reviewed and assessed. The paper contains a comprehensive bibliography for further reading.
Book Synopsis Bioeconomics of Fisheries Management by : Lee G. Anderson
Download or read book Bioeconomics of Fisheries Management written by Lee G. Anderson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-11-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries Economics has always been an interdisciplinary field of study with economic analysis based on stock population dynamics, but many published works have focused mainly on theoretical economic issues without much focus on biological details. For the most part, age structured models have been ignored. Bioeconomics of Fisheries Management is a valuable reference text that presents the economic aspects of fisheries management in a broad bioeconomic framework. The book is broken into two parts. Part I covers the traditional areas of fisheries economics, covering topics such as open access, optimal and managed fisheries utilization that is analyzed through a traditional one stock/one fleet model. It also presents the basic results in terms of an age structured model. Part II covers material related to more recent work on bioeconomic models when more rigorous biological components became more prevalent, and views fisheries management with an ecosystems-based approach. Accompanying the book is a user-friendly CD with exercises and examples that aids the reader in applying theoretical principles of population dynamics and fisheries management and regulation. Bioeconomics of Fisheries Management will be a valuable text for researchers, fisheries economists, professionals, and students alike.

Book Synopsis Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries by : National Research Council
Download or read book Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In developing countries, traditional fishermen are important food contributors, yet technological information and development assistance to third-world nations often focuses on agriculture and industrial fishing, without addressing the needs of independent, small-scale fishermen. This book explores technological considerations of small-scale, primitive fishing technologies, and describes innovative, relatively inexpensive methods and tools that have already been successfully applied in developing countries. It offers practical information about all aspects of small-scale fishing, including boat design and construction, fishing methods and gear, artificial reef construction and fish aggregating devices, techniques for coastal mariculture, and simple methods for processing and preserving fish once they are caught. Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries is illustrated throughout with photographs of the devices and construction methods described in the text.

Book Synopsis Increasing the Contribution of Small-scale Fisheries to Poverty Alleviation and Food Security by : Christophe Béné
Download or read book Increasing the Contribution of Small-scale Fisheries to Poverty Alleviation and Food Security written by Christophe Béné and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third and main section of the document discusses ways of increasing the contribution of small-scale fisheries to poverty alleviation and food security through nine main entry points. First, the paper revisits conventional fisheries policies and legislation and makes suggestions on how those can be made more pro-poor. Next, the paper emphasizes the importance of capacity building and highlights how cross-sectoral interventions can greatly improve the livelihoods of fish-dependent communities. The paper then proposes a series of broad pro-poor or pro-small-scale fisheries principles, before discussing in greater detail three of the main management instruments adopted in fisheries: (i) property right approaches; (ii) co-management; and (iii) protected areas. The next two sub-sections discuss markets and how to make them work for the poor, and the important issue of pro-poor financing systems and subsidies.
