Download or read book Offshore Oil written by Roger Voyer and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983, Offshore Oil is an early and prescient analysis of the prospects for oil and gas development off Canada's east coast. The book examines the potential of offshore oil to provide growth in Canadian industries. As development proceeds huge sums will be invested and oil companies' needs include platforms, drilling rigs, ships, plants and a host of smaller items such as drills, pumps, transformers and electronic equipment. This presents opportunities not only for traditional industries such as steel and shipbuilding but also for the high-technology sector. Offshore oil holds the prospect of energy self-sufficiency for Canada and of better times for the depressed Atlantic economy. But development of gas could also bring a "boom and bust" that damages the region's social and economic fabric. This book considers both possibilities.

Book Synopsis The Other Macdonald Report by : Daniel Drache
Download or read book The Other Macdonald Report written by Daniel Drache and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1982 the Macdonald Commission began its $20-million mission to find a consensus on Canada's future. The commission held hearings in 28 towns and cities, met with 700 concerned parties and assembled nearly 40,000 pages of testimony. In his Report, Commission chair Donald S. Macdonald announced Canada must make a "leap of faith" and embrace free trade with the U.S., apparently signalling the victory of a globalizing, corporate vision of the country's development. The Other Macdonald Report reopens the debate, presenting twenty key submissions to the Commission by organizations such as the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, the United Auto Workers, the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, the Canadian Mental Health Association and the National Farmers Union. Together these groups offer a vision of Canada where human needs take priority over capital and technology. The Other Macdonald Report offers alternatives to the corporate vision for Canada's future, alternatives forged during the vibrant free trade debates of the mid-1980s.

Download or read book Tug of War written by Jocelyn Wills and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selling Earth observation satellites on their abilities to predict and limit adverse environmental change, politicians, business leaders, the media, and technology enthusiasts have spent sixty years arguing that space exploration can create a more peaceful, prosperous world. Capitalist states have also socialized the risk and privatized the profits of the commercial space industry by convincing taxpayers to fund surveillance technologies as necessary components of sovereignty, freedom, and democracy. Jocelyn Wills’s Tug of War reminds us that colonizing the cosmos has not only accelerated the arms race but also encouraged government contractors to compete for the military and commercial spoils of surveillance. Although Canadians prefer to celebrate their role as purveyors of peaceful space applications, Canada has played a pivotal part in the expansion of neoliberal policies and surveillance networks that now encircle the globe, primarily as a political ally of the United States and component supplier for its military-industrial complex. Tracing the forty-five-year history of Canada’s largest space company – MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) – through the lens of surveillance studies and a trove of oral history transcripts, government documents, trade journals, and other sources, Wills places capitalism’s imperial ambitions squarely at the centre of Canada-US relations and the privatization of the Canadian political economy. Tug of War confronts the mythic lure of technological progress and the ways in which those who profess little interest in war rationalize their leap into military contracting by avoiding the moral and political implications of their work.
Book Synopsis How Ottawa Decides by : French, Richard
Download or read book How Ottawa Decides written by French, Richard and published by Lorimer. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1984, How Ottawa Decides is an insider's view of how Ottawa tried throughout the 1970s to establish priorities and act on them. The book anatomizes the politics of the bureaucracy and the Cabinet, showing how power really operated in Ottawa during this period. It tracks the failure of many ambitious efforts to impose political control over government departments long used to operating without undue interference from elected officials. How Ottawa Decides is startling first-hand account of the forces that really ran the federal government in the 1970s.

Download or read book Routledge Revivals: Industrial Dislocation (1991) written by Daniel Todd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, this book offers a thorough examination of the decline of heavy industry in industrialised countries in the West, which focuses on problems in the shipbuilding industry. Todd argues that three points are central to its demise: industrial life cycles, the international division of labour and the energy crises of 1973. His work begins with despondency in western shipbuilding, going back as early as 1956, when Japan usurped Britain as the pre-eminent ship producer. The book goes on to explore international trade and industry in the second half of the 20th century, with analysis on industrial reorganisation and East Asian conglomerates, diversification with the marine industries, and shipbuilding in Brazil, India, and China.
