Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A relational database management system (RDBMS) is a software product that structures data in accordance with the relational data model and permits data manipulation based on relational algebra. There are two widely-used query languages for the relational database management systems (RDBMS's). These are Structured Query Language (SQL) and Query By Example (QBE). Although these languages are powerful, they both have drawbacks concerning ease-of-use, especially in expressing universal quantification and specifying complex nested queries. In order to eliminate these problems, Data Flow Query Language (DFQL) has been proposed. DFQL offers an easy-to-use graphical user interface to the relational model based on a data flow diagram, while maintaining all of the strengths of SQL andQBE. The purpose of this thesis is to implement DFQL, allowing the users to login one or more relational database(s) through JDBC, view the structure of the connected databases graphically, and implement inquiries in SQL and DFQL to retrieve the data.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully revised, updated, and expanded, Relational Database Design and Implementation, Third Edition is the most lucid and effective introduction to the subject available for IT/IS professionals interested in honing their skills in database design, implementation, and administration. This book provides the conceptual and practical information necessary to develop a design and management scheme that ensures data accuracy and user satisfaction while optimizing performance, regardless of experience level or choice of DBMS.The book begins by reviewing basic concepts of databases and database design, then briefly reviews the SQL one would use to create databases. Topics such as the relational data model, normalization, data entities and Codd's Rules (and why they are important) are covered clearly and concisely but without resorting to "Dummies"-style talking down to the reader.Supporting the book's step-by-step instruction are three NEW case studies illustrating database planning, analysis, design, and management practices. In addition to these real-world examples, which include object-relational design techniques, an entirely NEW section consisting of three chapters is devoted to database implementation and management issues. Principles needed to understand the basis of good relational database design and implementation practices Examples to illustrate core concepts for enhanced comprehension and to put the book's practical instruction to work Methods for tailoring DB design to the environment in which the database will run and the uses to which it will be put Design approaches that ensure data accuracy and consistency Examples of how design can inhibit or boost database application performance Object-relational design techniques, benefits, and examples Instructions on how to choose and use a normalization technique Guidelines for understanding and applying Codd's rules Tools to implement a relational design using SQL Techniques for using CASE tools for database design

Book excerpt: This thesis involved the design and translation of the Data Flow Query Language (DFQL) for the Multi-Lingual, Multi-Backend Database System (MDBS). The MDBS is a database system that can effectively support multiple data models and their corresponding data manipulation languages. The problem was the MDBS interfaces are text-based, and not very user-friendly. The approach taken to solve this interface problem was to design and translate the DFQL for implementation on the MDBS. DFQL was designed to improve and extend SQL, the data manipulation language associated with the relational data model. It uses a graphical interface based on the data flow paradigm. This translation would extend the MDBS by allowing a graphical interface to be implemented, whereas currently a user can only access the system with text-based interfaces. The result of this thesis is the development of the DFQL to ABDL translator. The subsequent implementation of this translator on the MDBS would be a user- oriented enhancement to the current system. In addition, further improvements to the MDBS should be made, such as allowing the use of additional data types (currently constrained to string and integer) and the ability to create views. These changes would allow all the benefits from DFQL, such as orthogonality, language extensibility and incremental querying to be achieved and made available to the user.

Book excerpt: Lucid is anew dataflow language, designed to exploit the capabilities of the multi-processor machines which are more powerful than single-processor machines, and require a language in which highly parallel algorithms can be easily expressed. The primary objective of this book is to prove that dataflow is a real alternative to sequential/imperative computing and that dataflow algorithms can be expressed naturally and concisely in Lucid.

The International Semantic Web Conference is the premier forum for Semantic Web research, where cutting edge scientific results and technological innovations are presented, where problems and solutions are discussed, and where the future of this vision is being developed. It brings together specialists in fields such as artificial intelligence, databases, social networks, distributed computing, Web engineering, information systems, human-computer interaction, natural language processing, and the social sciences. Part 1 (LNCS 8796) contains a total of 38 papers which were presented in the research track. They were carefully reviewed and selected from 180 submissions. Part 2 (LNCS 8797) contains 15 papers from the 'semantic Web in use' track which were accepted from 46 submissions. In addition, it presents 16 contributions of the RBDS track and 6 papers of the doctoral consortium.
