Book excerpt: This study estimates the effect of one year of Fusion Reading implementation, a multistrategy intervention, builds on the work of the Strategic Instruction Model's Learning Strategies Curriculum and Xtreme Reading by integrating some of the same strategies (e.g., paraphrasing, visual imagery, and self-questioning for information acquisition; mnemonics for information study; and writing and error monitoring for information expression), focusing on reading, and extending the time frame from 1 to 2 years in duration. Specifically, the study addressed the following: (1) What are the intent-to-treat impacts of the Fusion Reading intervention on the reading outcomes and motivation to read of struggling readers after receipt of 1 year of the intervention?; (2) For which students are the interventions most and least effective?; and (3) In what ways are implementation factors associated with impacts (or lack of impacts) on reading and motivation outcomes? The authors conducted a randomized controlled trial to estimate the effect of Fusion Reading on struggling readers in grades 6 through 10. Students in the intervention condition received the Fusion Reading intervention as a supplemental reading intervention in the 2010-11 school year, whereas students in the control condition engaged in nonliteracy, "business-as-usual" activities. After one year of implementation of a two year intervention, the authors learned that when vocabulary, paraphrasing and word study strategies are explicitly taught by following a specific instructional routine supported by motivation strategies (e.g., setting goals and reading text relevant for the age group), word reading outcomes will significantly improve compared to control middle and high school students. Future research is needed to fully understand whether the intended two year intervention will improve struggling adolescent's reading comprehension outcomes. Appended are: (1) References; and (2) Tables and Figures. (Contains 2 figures and 5 tables.).

The goal of Striving Readers is to improve literacy skills and achievement for struggling readers in middle and high school and to increase the research base using randomized clinical research to address improvement in adolescent literacy instruction. This session will present results to date from the five Striving Readers sites that use READ 180. (Contains 2 exhibits.).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify a relationship between literature circle participation and reading motivation, engagement, and achievement for struggling middle school readers. The research was conducted in a public urban elementary (K -8) school. Participants were students from one teacher's English Language Arts class. The treatment group included 10 students from 6th grade, 9 students from 7th grade, and 7 students from 8th grade, and the control group included 14 students from 6th grade, 16 students from 7th grade, and 21 students from 8th grade. Data was collected over 18 weeks. Independent-samples t tests were used to compare differences between the experimental and control groups, and paired -samples t tests were used to compare students' pre- and postintervention scores. Reading motivation and engagement was measured using a survey including four categories (Value for Reading, Enjoyment of Reading, Motivation for Reading, and Engagement in Social Reading), and reading achievement was determined from Reading MAP scores. The results indicate that there was not a significant difference between the growth in motivation or engagement experienced by the treatment group and the control group. However, at a 94% confidence interval, results revealed significantly higher achievement gains for the treatment group than the control group. Further research is needed to validate these findings and to continue exploring the impact of literature circles on engagement and motivation in reading. Keywords: literature circles, middle school reading, struggling readers, engagement, motivation, achievement, urban education, English Language Arts.

Book excerpt: Evidence supports a positive relationship between problem behaviors and reading difficulties across Grades K-12 yet there is a lack of research investigating the role of problem behavior in the context of reading interventions. In this study, data was analyzed from a site-specific subset of students from a multi-site randomized controlled trial (RCT) implementing a multi-component reading intervention for struggling readers in Grades 4 – 5. Data were analyzed to answer the following research questions: (1) What is the impact of multi-component reading intervention for 4th and 5th grade students who are struggling readers on both reading and problem behavior outcomes? and (2) Does problem behavior moderate the effect of a multi-component reading intervention for 4th and 5th grade students who are struggling readers? Students (n = 108) were randomly assigned to a one-year multi-component comprehension reading intervention or a school determined business as usual (BAU) comparison condition after meeting the criterion for identification as a struggling reader by scoring at or below a 90 standard score on the Test of Silent Reading Efficiency and Comprehension (Wagner, Torgesen, Rashotte, & Pearson, 2010) screener assessment. To answer the research questions, data (reading and behavior outcomes) were analyzed using an analysis of covariance to: 1) test the impact of the reading intervention on both reading and behavior outcomes; and 2) test for a significant interaction between measures of problem behavior and condition (i.e., treatment or comparison) on reading outcomes (e.g., Gates MacGinitie Reading Test; MacGainitie, 2000). Models controlled for student-level differences (e.g., reading pretest scores). Type I error associated with multiple comparisons was controlled for using the Benjamani-Hochberg correction to adjust for false discovery rates. Results suggested that the impact of treatment resulted in significant posttest group differences on word reading fluency (p

Book excerpt: This inquiry project examines an eleven week reading intervention program's impact on the attitudes and self-perceptions of four struggling second or third grade readers. Through qualitative case study, the project gives life to the students' experiences, using the author as both storyteller and data collector. Data was gathered through the author's anecdotal notes, formal reading assessments, and from the perspectives of the students, parents, and teachers through surveys and interviews. Themes emerged from this data, leading to an anecdotal analysis of the participants' experiences in the program. The students' dramatic improvement in reading effectiveness resulted from their hard work in successful and purposeful reading activities, corresponding to the development of increased confidence and motivation with support from peers and teachers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-method study was to examine and better understand the impact of participating in a 7-week intensive, phonologically-based remedial reading program on the self-perceptions of maltreated adolescent and young adult struggling readers from the Ontario Child-Welfare system. Eleven maltreated youth with reading difficulties aged 15 to 23 years were extensively interviewed both prior to and following intervention about their reading and skill-related self-perceptions. Their responses were analyzed thematically using grounded theory methodology. Independent and paired-samples t tests were also conducted to measure the impact of intervention on the self-perceptions and reading achievement of these youth and to evaluate whether these variables significantly differed from a group of maltreated youth without reading difficulties (n = 11). Results converged to provide empirical support for the benefits of reading intervention on the self-perceptions and reading achievement of maltreated struggling readers. Implications, limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This qualitative research study examined the effects of implementing visual, verbal, and performance-based, non-traditional reading comprehension strategies with struggling adolescent readers. The participants were seventh-grade general education and special education students in a remedial Language Arts class. The class met twice daily to engage in lessons that included drawing, acting, and retelling to enhance overall reading comprehension. This study proposes that positive effects result from using non-traditional approaches with struggling readers. With the use of instruction in the nontraditional format, studentsU+2019 attitudes toward lessons improved, classroom assessment scores remained proficient and standardized test scores improved.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that reading intervention for struggling students is imperative at a young age for future success. The goal for all students is to be college and career ready, and wise participants in society. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the Read 180 program and growth in reading comprehension for struggling readers. It was a search to better understand the instructional strategies needed to support reading comprehension. It was also a search to understand how motivation plays a role in affecting student academic success, and the components of the program including technology that has embedded motivational pieces. Lastly, it was a search to better understand how to support teachers in their knowledge to advance student achievement. The study was conducted in a general education intervention classroom servicing students who were scoring Below Basic in their reading skills. The results suggest that there is a strong relationship between the Read 180 program and growth in reading comprehension. The majority of the students made gains in comprehension as measured by the Reading Inventory during the study with a strong positive correlation r = 0.469.
