Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of foster parents to understand how they make meaning of their child's behavior and their training needs. A survey posted to online foster parent support communities gathered information about foster parents' level of parental reflective functioning, perceptions of training experiences, and reflections on their parenting experience. Responses from 13 participants were collected and analyzed. Quantitative data gathered was used to characterize the sample of participants. Using thematic analysis, nine themes were rendered. Participants identified positive and negative aspects of their parenting experience, reported strong feelings of love, highlighted the impact of trauma on their child, described struggling with interpreting and responding to their child's difficult behavior, and struggled with navigating emotional responses. Participants reported being dissatisfied with their previous training experiences, found trauma focused training the most helpful, and disclosed a desire for more training on practical techniques. Implications for clinical treatment and foster parenting training are discussed.

After using surveys to question foster parents in North and South Carolina, the research concluded that foster parents strongly believed they would greatly benefit from incorporating a comprehensive emotional intelligence training program into the training regimen. The researcher concludes the study by developing a shell emotional intelligence training program aimed to maximize the potential of each foster parent as they care for children in their home.

The heuristic research model was implemented as the framework for this study to position this qualitative research, which included the six phases of heuristics: initial engagement, immersion, incubation, illumination, explication, and creative synthesis. A literature review of related studies applicable to this research was included to support the meaning of this study amongst existing literature. Following the six phases of the heuristic research model, data was digitally collected from four co-researchers who revealed personal experiences of family reunification. This data was transcribed and correlated into the themes according to the heuristic model of research. The following themes were present with co-researchers: altruism, lack of support, and transition from idealism to burnout followed by burnout. Among those who would benefit from this study were foster care workers, separated families, foster parents, social service agencies, judicial systems, clinicians, communities, and those who are anticipating involvement in the foster care system.

Book excerpt: Each year, growing numbers of black foster youth, ages 18 and older, are emancipated from the child welfare system. Prior to termination, they are provided with a montage of independent living services aimed at teaching self-sufficiency skills. Nevertheless, many of these youth find themselves alone without the necessary aptitude, resources, and support needed to assume the intimidating responsibilities of adulthood. Although the literature regarding emancipated youth and their outcomes is extensive, there has been minimal research conducted on the unique experiences of Black youth as well as the factors that contribute to their success or failure in their transition to independence. Further, the information regarding their outcomes has been garnered from foster parents, case managers, attorneys, and family members, while failing to incorporate the voices of the youth who are best able to articulate the obstacles they encounter. This qualitative study examines the lives and experiences of eight black former foster youth. Audiotaped semi-structured interviews were conducted for the study. Data analysis took place throughout the data collection process. Their distinctive experiences, from their early childhood experiences that lead to placement in foster care, as well as their emancipation from care and subsequent road to independence are chronicled through their voices. Findings uncovered four themes: 1) child maltreatment, 2) unresolved trauma, 3) need for a sense of belonging, and 4) lack of preparation for adulthood. These themes represent the stumbling blocks of the participants’ past that continue to influence their life paths. This study enhances our understanding of the experiences of black aged out foster youth and the many challenges they face on their road to adulthood. Their individual stories raise poignant questions about the impact and efficacy of the foster care system on the lives of our most vulnerable youth.
