Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Resurrection Psychology', Margaret Alter advances a system of psychology based upon biblical Christianity. Moving away from the notion that therapy must be completely value-neutral, the author suggests how the worlds of psychology and theology can enhance and inform one another. The result is a practical model of human personality observable in Jesus' life and teachings. As a practicing therapist and adjunct professor, Alter combines her extensive experience with years of study to offer a fresh approach to the field of psychology. By examining gospel stories that represent ten major themes and applying them to individual lives today, this book draws upon the teachings of Jesus as it addresses and transforms contemporary theories of psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels New Testament by way of a comprehensive comparison of all its diverse points of view and variant expressions Of the Gospel. Not only so, but in this volume itself, which is but part of the proposed plan, I have recognized the fact that even within the narrower limits of the Gospels which give us our record of the Gospel, there are not only possible but actual diverse impressions of what the Gospel is; and that not only is full justice due to each such impression, taken by itself and for its own sake, but that the very fullest justice to each is the only way of arriving at the truth of all, or at the truth of the whole of which they are the complementary and neces sary parts. The one great lesson that must forerun and make ready the Christian unity of the future is this: that contraries do not necessarily contradict, nor need opposites always oppose. What we want is not to surrender or abolish our differences, but to unite and compose them. We need the truth of every va riant opinion and the light from every opposite point of view. The least fragment is right in so far as it stands for a part of the truth. It is wrong only when, as so Often, it elevates into a ground of division from the other fragments just that which in reality fits it to unite with and supplement them. What has been said may indicate at least the spirit and temper in which the study before us is sought to be conducted. I speak here, of course, only in general ities; the concrete application or use of the principles enunciated must be found and judged in the book itself. As a matter of form rather than of substance, I feel that there will be a question as to the success with which the promise of method or procedure has been carried out in the volume before us. The matter is treated in the following order: (1) the Gospel of the Common Humanity, (2) the Gospel of the Work, and (3) the Gospel of the Person of our Lord. And each of these is to be considered, as far as possible, by itself and independently of the others. There are those who hold the first of these and not the other two, or the first two and not the third - at least in the full sense in which we think Christianity includes them all. And we were under obligation to do full justice to the point of view of all. If I have succeeded but imperfectly in doing this, if I have at times, contrary to promise, run the lower position up into the higher, or anticipated the higher in the lower, it is at least a question where the responsibility lies. It may be that what I myself believe to be, not three gospels, but three aspects or stages of one and the same Gospel, may indeed be so. And it may be that they themselves do, of themselves and in spite Of us, so run up together into one, that it is impossible for us, however honest we may be in the effort to do justice to each by itself, to keep them apart; so predetermined are they, and determined, to find each its own meaning and fulfilment, not in the sep arate truth of each, but in the united and common truth of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Aspects of the Life of Jesus: From the Psychological and Psycho-Analytic Point of View IT is not the object of this work to repeat what has already been said, and well said, by others. It makes no attempt to follow that fashion of modern erudition which delights in reopening questions that have been settled in order to settle them again with a great parade of impressive citations. Nor does it attempt either to raise or to solve all the theological, critical, or practical problems which the Life of Jesus presents. Its aim is at once more modest and quite different. I have, however, drifted into polemics that may, I fear, be considered alien to My School and My Gospel. But that was inevitable; and I take comfort in the thought that my arguments may, after all, be found to fulfil a purpose in a book that I ask may be judged as a human document. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Jesus Christ Thought of Himself: An Outline Study and Interpretation Self-Revelation in the Gospels I realize that if this little book receives any attention it will be attacked from two opposite sides. Liberal critics will complain because it makes some slight supplementary use of the Fourth Gospel. Some conservatives, on the other hand, will think the conclusions unortho dox, and not consistent with Nicene theology. But it is believed that all will recognize the author's sincere devotion to the Person of Christ, and his earnest attempt to show the latter's con sciousness of Messiahship. They all assume a certain original essence, as well as an inward dissolution and perversion, complete renewal and future perfection of human nature; and Scripture teaching, expounding as it does the spiritual nature of man, cannot and will not take for granted, or borrow ready-made from human psychology, a comprehensive, thoroughgoing, and correct knowledge of self. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twice-Born in Men America: Or the Psychology of Conversion as Seen by a Christian Psychologist in Rescue Mission Work I taught psychology for fifteen years at the Atchison Institute, the predecessor Of Midland College, located at 'atchison, Kan. I was there greatly impressed by the fact that the books gave no adequate analysis of the psychology of the greatest mental and moral change which can come to the human mind, namely, conversion and regeneration; yet these changes make the great dif ference which we see between men and nations. A Rescue Mission gives a great opportunity to study mental and moral changes, and my observations and con elusions, made from years of study, are herein embodied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To survey harsh criticisms against Brian Douglas McLaren (1956‒), readers gain the inaccurate impression that he is a heretical relativist who denies objective truth and logic. While McLaren’s inflammatory and provocative writing style is partly to blame, this study also suspects that his critics base much of their analyses on only small portions of his overall corpus. The result becomes a caricature of McLaren’s actual philosophy of religion. What is argued in this book is that McLaren’s philosophy of religion suggests a faith-based intersubjective relationship with the divine ought to result in an existential appropriation of Christ’s religio-ethical teachings. When subjectively internalized, this appropriation will lead to the assimilation of Jesus’ kingdom priorities, thereby transforming the believer’s identity into one that actualizes Jesus’ kingdom ideals. The hope of this book is that by tracing McLaren’s philosophy of Christian religion, future researchers will not only be able to comprehend (and perhaps empathize with) McLaren’s line of reasoning, but they will also possess a more nuanced discernment of where they agree and disagree with his overall rationale.

Book excerpt: For almost two millennia, Jesus' story has been retold in various forms and fashions but in the last century a new way of reimagining the man from Galilee has sprung up in the form of novels about the life ofJesus. While the novels themselves are asvaried as their authors, this work aims to introduce readers to some common literary strategies and theological agendas found in this phenomenon by surveying a few prominent examples. It also explores the question of what happens when we examine theintertextual play between these reimaginings and their Gospel progenitors as we allow these contemporary novels to pose new questions to their ancient counterparts. An intriguing hermeneutical circle ensues as we embark on our quest for the fictional Jesus and accompany his incarnations as they lead us back to re-examine the canonical portraits of Jesus anew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spirit of Ludolph of Saxony (c. 1295–1378) and Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), The Fourfold Gospel invites the reader into the mystery of God’s redemption in Jesus Christ. All the parallel passages in the Gospels are glossed together, along with the unique material, using a medieval interpretive approach called the Quadriga or the acronym PaRDeS in Hebrew. Meditating on the literal, canonical, moral, and theological senses of Scripture offers a scaffolding for the spiritual formation of the reader. This volume focuses on the illuminative stage of discipleship, the goal of the parables, along with Jesus’s conflict with enemies and our mission.
