Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Problem Course in Chemistry The object has been not to set an arbitrary standard for other teachers to follow, but to compile such a set of problems as will meet the needs of the individual teacher and the in dividual student. In the interest of variety and thoroughness, more than six hundred problems are furnished, although the authors have found in their own classes that one hundred and fifty of these exercises, related to the laboratory and text-k material, provide a satisfactorily balanced year's work. The fundamental principles essential to an intelligent under standing of the calculations are presented in a clear and simple manner. Emphasis is laid upon the fact that all relationships in chemistry are quantitative, and means are provided for the solution of problems commonly met in general chemistry. It has been deemed advisable to call attention to the typical and characteristic reactions of the chemistry of the home, of the laboratory, and of industry. The data provided in the tables have been collected from standard works of reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Advanced Course of Instruction in Chemical Principles The purpose of the course is to give such students an intimate knowledge of fundamental chemical principles and a training in logical, scientific thinking, such as will enable them to attack effectively the practical prob lems arising in their subsequent educational or professional work in any of the branches of chemistry or related sciences. Descriptive text-books of physical chemistry afford a general survey of chemical laws and theories which may suffice for the purposes of students who are not preparing for a professional career on the educational, research, or industrial sides of chemistry, but they do not give that intensive training which is essential for pursuing successfully more specialized courses of scientific study or for applying chemical principles to industrial problems. No one regards a course of lectures on the principles of mathematics as a suitable method of giving beginners the ability to handle that science, and with scarcely more reason can descriptive courses on physical chemistry be expected to afford a working knowledge of chemical principles in their quantitative aspects. Only by constantly applying the principles to concrete problems will the student acquire such a knowledge and the power to use it in new cases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Laboratory Course in Chemistry The course of practical chemistry outlined in this book is intended for students who are beginning the subject and at the same time taking a course of lectures on general chemistry. It was arranged primarily for the first year Arts course Of the University of Toronto, in which all science students - whether they are taking chemistry for two years only or whether they intend to Specialise in this subject - are required to do exactly the same work in their first year. It has been necessary therefore to keep in view the twofold object of giving the former class of students, in a very limited period, as fair an idea as possible of the general nature of chemistry, and at the same time, of providing the latter class with a good working basis for their subsequent course. Owing to the short time spent in the laboratory (two afternoons a week) many important principles have been necessarily omitted. The principles especially emphasised, however, are those which, on account Of their inherent difficulty or Of some traditional error in previous in struction, generally appear to give most trouble to the student. The numerous problems offer little mathematical difficulty, but much drill in chemical science. The mathematical element is merely incidental; the aim is to lead the pupil to understand the chemical principle involved in the problem. The object has been not to set an arbitrary standard for other teachers to follow, but to compile such a set of problems as will meet the needs of the individual teacher and the individual student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Problems: With Brief Statements of the Principles Involved Tee value of problems as means for securing accuracy in a knowledge of Chemistry and as tests for attainments is recognized by the best educators in this country and Europe. N ot withstanding this there are very few volumes in the English language devoted solely to problems, and these are intended mainly to accompany certain text-books. This work was written because the author keenly felt the need of a convenient volume of problems, while giving instruction to his classes. The inconveniences attending the dictation of problems and the liability to mistake on the part of students can be appreciated only by those who have attempted orally to meet the needs of their classes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Calculations of General Chemistry: With Definitions, Explanations, and Problems Unless a clear and concise exposition of the methods of calculation is presented in the very first course of college work, the progress of the student is greatly hindered. On the other hand, too great a mass of mathematical data may impede rather than promote this progress. The aim, therefore, has been to limit these calculations to those subjects generally regarded as fundamental, and in which the student should receive the most complete and thorough drill. Such may rightfully constitute our Arithmetic of Chemistry. Of the many important subjects omitted, the greater number possess a theoretical bearing which brings them more properly into those courses following General and Analytical Chemistry or into the study of Physical Chemistry itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Physical Chemistry In organising the practical work in connection with a class of Physical Chemistry (1) a teacher may himself carry out the measurements while the whole class look on, or (2) he may divide the class into sets of two or more and assign one experiment to each set, or (3) he may adopt the "one student one experiment" plan. Of these three methods, the third is undoubtedly the best, because a student is made responsible for an experiment in a way that can never be when another is associated with him in the work. In the second method the tendency is for one student of a set to lead while the others make no attempt at initiative and lose the best part of the training obtainable in a laboratory. Close supervision is, of course, essential when valuable instruments are being handled, and frequently the teaching staff is too small for the demonstrating to be efficient according to the third plan, so that the second is adopted, which, however, is much to be preferred to the first. The time available for Practical Physical Chemistry is usually very meagre, and has an important bearing on the organisation of Laboratory Work. The best system would be one in which the question of time had never to be considered. As things are, however, a student, as a rule, can afford out of his day's work only one period of two to three hours for Practical Physical Chemistry. It is important, therefore, that the exercises should be such that they can be finished in one period not extending beyond the limits mentioned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Chemistry This book has grown out of the need for a text-book for the course in General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis in the University of California. There are, it is true, many excellent texts in existence, but whenever an instructor uses a text written by some one else he faces the dilemma that a departure from the order and manner of presentation of the printed text results in the loss of much of its value to the student, whereas a close adherence to it, on the other hand, interferes with the freedom and individuality, and hence with the enthusiasm and effectiveness of the teacher. Nor can the instructor altogether avoid this dilemma by writing his own book, as probably every one is tempted to do, for the use of any text tends to end the period of experimentation upon the class, and to substitute, therefor, year after year of complacent stereotyped repetition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Science: An Elementary Course of Physics and Chemistry Many of the experiments follow the course of instruction in elementary science contained in the physics and chemistry syllabus prepared by a Committee of the Incorporated Association of Head Masters. The results are indicated in each case, hence the experiments may be regarded in a way as solved examples of the general laws and phenomena Of physical science, but the examples can only be properly understood by actually following the various stages which lead to their solution. In a few sec tions of the book it has been necessary to illustrate by numerical examples the principles involved and to exercise the studentin solving simple problems of this kind numerous questions have been added to the chapters. For a large number of these, and more especially for those appended to Chapters III - VII, we are indebted to Mr. Walter J. Wood, who has collected many from actual examination papers, and has supplied the answers. Throughout the preparation of the following pages we have found the assistance and advice Of Professor R. A. Gregory invaluable. Teachers who know Professor Gregory's Exercise Book of Elementary Practical Physics will recognise in the earlier chapters of the present volume several experiments described in that book. The Opportunity of expressing thanks for permission to introduce these is gladly taken; and we also desire to express our Obligations to the Publishers for permitting free use of suitable illustrations from several of their elementary books in the various branches of science with which this volume is concerned.
