For it was made nor in the interests of the general reader nor in those of the technical Student of philosophy. It is thus neither a book of what the French call vulgariration nor yet a contribution to scholarship as that word is usually employed. It is addressed to that group of people who enjoy the clarification of issues even when those issues do nor touch upon their professional occupation, who would prefer clarity to edification even in those fields where edification is customary, who do not object to talk ing sense even when talking sense robs their conversation of its air of profundity. Books on the fine arts are no toriously obscure, almost hermetic. This is attributable not only to the sanctity which artists have acquired in modern times but to the vocabulary in which people dis cuss their works. It was with a view to dispelling that obscurity that this Study was undertaken some years ago. Unfortunately the accomplishment of the task has led to an insistence upon distinctions which will prove trying to all but the most good-natured readers. Let the Others remember that the author is a school teacher now in his middle years who, in spite of his being a member of the post-war generation, still retains a faith in education. That may make them patient. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Criticism More than a third of a century ago, Margaret Fuller said America had no national literature. Yet, at that time Irving, Poe, Cooper, Hawthorne, Bryant, Prescott, Emerson, Bayard Taylor, Simms, and Lowell were living American writers. All of these, except the latter, have passed away, leaving no worthy successors. The United States presents the extraordinary spectacle of a nation of readers, with scarcely one great national writer - a nation great in arms, progressive in science, enterprising in commerce, but unproductive in literary genius. We have so-called literary men in abundance - journalists, magazinists, compilers of books - but we look in vain for a "bard sublime," for a great American novelist, a great American critic. Plato banished poets from his republic. America does not honor literary talent as much as other professional talent. Edgar A. Poe, who, although a man of wayward habits, certainly possessed rare intellectual gifts, was forced to confess towards the close of his life, that he could not support himself by his pen; yet that pen had written the Raven, Ligeia, the Bells, The Fall of the House of Usher, and other unique compositions which the world will not willingly let die. An American poet, glancing at American literature twenty-five years ago, satirically said: "While the polished pen scarce earns a garret, Double-entry points to peace and claret." Is it much better now? American Congressmen affect to laugh at what they call "them literary fellahs." Congress has never been distinguished for the literary character of its members. The average Congressman is a man of mediocre ability, who reads nothing but the daily newspapers and cares nothing for literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of English Literature This book aims at being what its title indicates -a primer, a first book. It strives to tell simply and clearly a few things, and to bring prominently before the reader only the greatest literary names. The author has found that young readers get very little from a book which presupposes wide knowledge on their part, or which deals with elabo rate literary criticism. Much reading is done in the schools, however, and it is necessary to give pupils some chronological idea of the growth of literature and the place of authors. It is the pur pose of this book to supply that chronology in form somewhat fuller than an outline, and yet less bulky than the regular histories. While it gives no new point of view or illuminating criticisms, it hopes to meet the need of all classes of students who wish to acquire in a straightforward way the gen erally accepted facts of English literary history. Book excerpt: Arthur Asa Berger's unique ability to translate difficult theories into accessible language makes this book an ideal introduction to cultural criticism. Berger covers the key theorists, concepts, and subject areas, from literary, sociological and psychoanalytical theories to semiotics and Marxism. Cultural Criticism breathes new life into the discipline by making these theories relevant to students' lives. The author illustrates his explanations with excerpts from classic works giving readers a sense of the important thinkers' styles and helping place them in their context. Berger also provides a comprehensive bibliography on cultural criticism for those who wish to explore the topics at greater length. Cultural Criticism is the perfect undergraduate supplemental text for such courses as media studies, literary criticism, and popular culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Style: An Introduction to Literary Criticism This book will, I hope, Speak for itself; and, in any case, it is not, I think, likely to be assisted by any prefatory words, whether of recommendation or deprecation. But I take this opportunity of expressing my gratitude to many givers of help, criticism, and encouragement; especially to Mr. Sidney Smith, b.a., late Scholar of Queen's College, Cambridge, whose help was invaluable at various stages of the work; and to Mr. H. Fowler, of Clifton College, who very kindly read the proofs and made suggestions, most of which I have gladly followed. I wish also to thank my publishers, to whom I owe the index, as well as the analytical table of contents in its present form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature and Criticism The validity of this little book depends upon the belief that the character of a writer's whole achievement can only be felt and assessed by responding sensitively to the way in which he uses words, and that the capacity to make such a response can be formed or greatly enhanced by a training in literary criticism. D. H. Lawrence says some excellent things about critics and criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of French Literature The first edition of this little book appeared without a preface: the second may perhaps be allowed one, if only to express the Author's thanks to his critics and to the public for the reception given'to his work. Some corrections of phrase have been made, and a few errors in the dates have been rectified. That such corrections have not been more numerous is, I believe, mainly owing to the great care with which my friend Mr. Andrew Lang read the proof sheets for me and to the valuable suggestions which he made. In deference to the request of several friends an index has been added, though I myself consider the addition somewhat superfluous in the case of a book the body of which is little more than an index in itself. I have limited it to those names in connection with which something more than a mere mention will be found in the text. For the compiling of this index I owe my best thanks to Miss Emily J. Carey; while for indicating to me a somewhat important omission in a passage relating to Pascal I am obliged to M. Paul Stapfer, Professor in the Faculty of Letters at Grenoble. The work is divided into three parts, the first of which treats of fundamental principles. In three chapters the nature of criticism, the relation of the author to his work, and the aesthetic principles underlying literary art are briefly discussed. The facts and principles here presented are designed to give a clearer and deeper insight into the nature and processes of criticism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Criticism: An Introduction to the Study of Literature The purpose of this book is to present an account of the main principles of literary criticism, and to illustrate these principles by passages from great writers. The book will, therefore, be found to contain (in addition to the text) a collection of noteworthy critical utterances. The translations from the Greek, Germany and French have been done by the Author. References are made (with two exceptions) to the text of Aristotle by the pages of Immanuel Bekker's large (Berlin) edition; and to that of Plato, by the pages of the edition of Henry Stephens. Addison is cited by numbers of the Spectator, and Lessing by chapters of the Laocoon. In the case of other authors, the footnotes will sufficiently indicate the sources of reference. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study and Stage: A Year-Book of Criticism In one respect, the book may claim a certain origin; ality. I am not aware that any one hitherto has dared to treat the English acted drama as literature, and to place literary and dramatic criticisms not only on the same plane, but absolutely in the same rank, shoulder to shoulder. I trust the reader will not find that the variety thus imparted to my subject - matter amounts to a dis tressing heterogeneity. Perhaps the sagacious reviewer may discern in this division of my interests a source of weak ness, and decide that I write about the drama like a literary critic and about literature like a dramatic critic. If he can forgive me for taking the jibe out of his mouth, he may perhaps admit, on reflection, that it is no bad thing for a critic here and there to bring with him to the theatre some of the standards of the study, and to carry back to the study some of that rapidity of perception and penetration which is, or ought to be, engendered by the habit of making snapshot records of the passing pageant of the stage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Textual Criticism of the New Testament His little treatise purports to be a primer, and a primer to the art of textual criticism rather than to the science. Its purpose will be served if the reader is prepared by it to exercise the art in the usual processes, and to enter upon the study of the science in such books as Dr. Hort's In troduction, and Dr. Gregory's Prolegomena to Tischendorf's eighth edition. In such a primary treatise, and Where no claim to originality is made. Obligations to previous works can scarcely be acknow ledged. The author hopes that his general confession of having made use of everything that he could lay his hands upon that served his purpose, will be deemed sufficient acknowledgment of the many debts he is conscious of, and would like, if occasion served to confess in detail.
