Book excerpt: Evaluative research has shown that school alcohol education programs for youth have been ineffective in reducing alcohol abuse. Research recommendations for future programming advocate the use of alternative approaches incorporating community resources. Intervention with youth at an early age is indicated to maximize efficiency. In response to the recommendations, the researcher utilized the community resource of theatre and wrote "To Catch the Falling Stars," an original play about alcohol use, abuse, and alcoholism. Constructed for a preadolescent population (ages 9-12), the play incorporated the dynamics of peer-pressure and the process of decision-making. This community alcohol education project used an Action Research model to gain access to the two public school systems under study. Attendance included preadolescents from elementary and middle school students (n = 359) representing six schools from the Bellingham and Ferndale public school districts, Whatcom County, Washington. A seven-item survey was administered and data were cross-tabulated with the variables of age, sex, and grade. All grades reported some form of previous alcohol education. School alcohol education was ranked as the major source of prior education with an increasing trend from the fourth through seventh grades. Family talks were rated highest as a teaching source by the fourth grade and lowest by the seventh grade. Television was generally rated high by all grades but rated most strongly by the fourth grade level. the use of films as a perceived teaching source was reported with an increasing trend from the fourth through seventh grades. Peers, books, plays, and church were not generally seen as methods by which previous alcohol education had been provided. the play presentation was well-received as a means of entertainment and in the aspect of "information teaching." "Plays" were rated highest by all but the sixth grade population. the students offered a variety of subjects for future plays; most regularly information about "drugs" was requested. Further investigation of this community resource as a teaching method is indicated, given the historical ineffectiveness of alcohol education programs.

This book brings the reader up to date on the theory and research that have proliferated in the analysis of human emotions. The first section of the book addresses the classification, the neurological underpinnings, and the effect of gender on emotions. The second reviews sociological theories of emotion. Section three covers theory and research on specific emotions: love, envy, empathy, anger, grief, etc. The final section shows how the study of emotions adds new insight into other subfields of sociology: the workplace, health, and more.

Book excerpt: Proceedings of the XIV World Meeting of the International Society for the Research on Aggression: Prevention and Control of Aggression and the Impact on its Victims, held in July 9-14, 2000, in Valencia, Spain. Aggression is an aspect of human society that has interested scientists for many decades, and their work has provided important knowledge about its causes and way to prevent and control this behavior. However, not only scientists but many professionals working in the wide spectrum of society, from family to international policy, are interested in having programs of interventions capable of reducing aggression and violence in our society. This comprehensive book is a compendium of most research approaches that are currently taking place in the field of aggression, focusing on the interventions to control and prevent this behavior and the impact on its victims. The chapters of the book include biological approaches to aggression, such as neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, genetics and psychopathology; information about aggression in children and adolescents in different settings such as family, school and community; characteristics if aggression in specific relationships such as marital and sexual, and specific settings such as bars, prisons and traffic; and cultural approaches to aggression, social prejudice, war and programs of peace. Furthermore, a small number of representative chapters about victims are included, ranging from the impact of aggression on behavior and physiology in animal models to victims of war. As this book highlights, the interventions to prevent and control aggression have to be diverse (highly heterogenic) in order to deal with all aspects of human beings and society, ranging from pharmacological control in individuals to programs of peace to promote respect among people and among nations. Scientists, academics and professionals dealing with any facet of aggression and its impact on our society will obtain in this book information about the complexity of this research field and the ways to approach our objective: eliminate aggression from the human behavioral repertoire.
