Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Preliminary Catalogue of the Flora of Vancouver and Queen Charlotte Islands A Flora is a botanical account of the plants of a country or district, with the orders or families systematically arranged under the classes. The genera under the orders, and the species (when there are more than one) under the genus to which they belong. Of late years there has been a great awakening in the study of the flowering plants of this Province; -many inquiries are made as to the names of the more popular plants and as to where their descriptions can be found. To meet these demands the Provincial Museum undertook to add greatly to the Herbarium, and received unbounded support from many persons who were very much interested in this branch of natural history. More and more people are beginning to realize the pleasure and profit that can be gained from the observation of the plants growing around us, observing their beauty, and acquiring a knowledge which greatly increases an appreciation of nature. Botanical biology teaches us the study of 'plants cannot be overlooked. The very existence of the animal kingdom is solely dependent on vegetable life; the great problems of geographical distribution; the theory of organic evolution or the innermost secrets of vital phenomena, whether in health or disease, are simplified by the study of plants. Botany and zoology are dependent on each other, without one the other would cease to exist. It is a study which cannot be indefinitely post poned, as the old terrestrial order is fast passing away before our eyes; everywhere the primitive vegetation is disappearing as more and more of the earth's surface is brought under cultivation and our forests are denuded of their original growth. Much work has been done, and still greater is the work which has yet to be accomplished. This list will, without doubt, give some idea of the many species which are to be found on Vancouver and Queen Charlotte Islands, giving known locations in which they have been collected. The scientific or Latin name is given first, followed by the English or popular name, those plants that have been introduced being printed in italic letters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Northeastern Pennsylvania Preface In accordance with the expressed wish of the late Doctor Everhart, as a supplement to the collection of woods and seeds of Lackawanna County, which he was making at the time he was stricken with his last illness, labeled and now on exhibition in the Museum, I presented my Herbarium of over 2, 000 specimens to the institution which bears its founders name. Incorporated in the Herbarium is a practically complete collection of the Flora of this part of the state, particularly of Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties. In further carrying out the wishes of Doctor Everhart I have prepared this check list of the Flora of the above region for publication. A preliminary list of the plants in the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys, of which Prof. W.R. Dudley, then of Cornell University, was the author, was published under the auspices of the Lackawanna Institute of History and Science, in 1887. This volume named 769 species as reported and classified. In 1892, Professor Dudley, then connected with the Leland Stanford University of California, and Prof. Charles O.Thurston of the Wyoming Seminary Scientific Department combined their personal notes, observations and collections with those of other students of local botanical research and issued a very complete catalog of "The Flowering Plants and vascular Cryptogams found in and near the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys." This volume contained the names of 107 orders and 974 species, to which there were later addenda of 88 species, - a total of 1, 062. Of this number several have since been considered doubtful, while others have become exterminated through forest fires or advance of cultivated areas and are not represented in this check list. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Flora of Westchester County The botanists of New York city are active, industrious collectors, and have absolutely exhausted most of the localities within walking distance of the city; especially such portions of New Jersey, Staten Island and parts of Long Island. The Harlem River, however, seems to have been, to a great extent, the limit to their excursions in this direction; hence, this county is less known to New York botanists than any other region within the same distance of the city. The collecting of information has, therefore, been more formidable than suspected. The State of New York has a remarkably large Flora but it has a territory extending about 350 miles from north to south, and nearly the same distance from east to west-giving it a wide range of climate and temperature. It has plains along the coast elevated just a little above the sea level, and mountains on the eastern border rising feet above the ocean; it possesses every variety of soil, from the sands of the Saranac region to the alluvial plains of the western slope and the rich bottom lands of the head waters of the Susquehanna, and the val leys of the Mohawk and the Upper Hudson. Dr. Torrey, in his report of the Flora of the State, stated that the number of flowering plants would reach 5 and the Ferns and Lycopodiaceae, sixty. There will be great reason, then, for wonder, when it is found that the number of plants growing without cultivation in Westchester County a territory about fifty miles in extent from north to south, and whose average width from east to west is not half so much - is more than a thousand.
