Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Synopsis of Cutaneous Diseases: According to the Arrangement of Dr. Willan, Exhibiting a Concise View of the Diagnostic Symptoms and the Method of Treatment The opportunities which have been afforded to him, from his connection with two extensive medical charitable institutions, have enabled him to add considerably to the practical part of the work; and he trusts that, in this respect, the present edition will be found not unworthy of the confidence of the practitioner. It is the wish of the Editor still to improve the volume; and he shall anxiously embrace every opportunity which his brethren may afford him of doing so, conscious that much may be done in advancing the treatment of a class of diseases, which have hitherto been regarded more as affording opportunities for empirical experiments, than for the application of those principles which are founded upon an accurate knowledge of physiology and pathology. He has augmented greatly, at the close of each genus, the lists of the works which may be consulted on the diseases that constitute the genera. Much of the difficulty, indeed, which a young man has to encounter in the early pursuit of his profession, arises from his ignorance of the sources whence he can derive information; the Editor, therefore, is assured that this part of his labours will be justly appreciated. The advantage of plates to aid the descriptions of cutaneous eruptions is undeniable; for without such an appeal to the eye it is almost impossible for the student to form a correct idea of the most accurate description.
