Book excerpt: A Place to Live in Peace: Free People of Color in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana reveals a community where free people of color lived harmoniously with white people even as slavery persisted. Author Evelyn L. Wilson documents the presence, land ownership, business development, and personal relationships of free people of color in this Louisiana parish. In the last decade before the Civil War, tensions over slavery in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, led to the separation of free people of color from their white counterparts. But until the 1850s, free people of color had lived and thrived there. The free people of color who inhabited West Feliciana Parish were not a settled population with a common background or a long history of freedom. Some entered the parish already free, others purchased their freedom, while others had been freed by slaveholders for differing reasons. Regardless of how they arrived in the parish, they found themselves in a community that valued the talents and skills they had to offer without regard to the color of their skin. These individuals were integrated into their community, lived among white neighbors, provided needed services, and owned successful businesses. Using extensive archival research, including court records, government documents, legal citations, and periodicals, Wilson interprets the lives, experiences, and contributions of free people of color in West Feliciana Parish. The integral role that these free people of color played in the parish complicates common understandings of the antebellum South.

Book excerpt: God has authored days of heaven on earth for His children - not days of worry, fear, or doubt - but of peace. Many think that life would be peaceful if the enemy would leave them alone, but he won't. We must learn to live untroubled and undisturbed right in the presence of the enemy. The peace God gives makes that possible. The greatest value of peace isn't seen when everything is running smoothly and in place, rather, when circumstances are high and storms are raging. In this book, Nancy Dufresne teaches how to close the door to worry, fear, and doubt, and live the life God authored for us - days of Peace: Living Free from Worry.

Book excerpt: "To take care of each other should be our primary concern in this 21st century and Father Dear is steady on this course." --Thich Nhat Hanh For John Dear, a Jesuit priest and respected leader of the ecumenical peace movement, the spiritual life is a combination of contemplation and action, of maintaining inner peace and projecting that peace into the greater world. It is the spirituality exemplified by the lives of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, and others throughout history who remained true to the highest ideals while addressing the most difficult problems and conflicts of the real world. As a tireless advocate for social justice and human rights, Dear has followed that path in his own life, and in Living Peace he describes his journey. Breaking down the life of peace into three parts an inner journey, a public journey, and the journey of all humanity he shares the spiritual practices that have sustained him and teaches readers how to integrate these practices into their own lives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning biophysicist Markolf H. Niemz puts into a nutshell what the top 3 scientists on earth have discovered. Charles Darwin: Animal and man are not two. Albert Einstein: Space and time are not two. Alfred N. Whitehead: The world and I are not two. The world we live in is non-dualistic. Nature is crying for peace, but we shut off foreign from native, poor from rich, others from ourselves. It is our concept of the self that stands in the way of peace. Based on Darwin's, Einstein's and Whitehead's scientific discoveries the author demonstrates how easily we mistake reality. There is neither a personal self nor an external, almighty God. Eternity, which most religious people hope for, does not begin at death. It is here and now—at the speed of light when all distances turn zero. This book has the power to foster empathy among mankind as it brings together science and religion—human sources of truth. In the clearest of terms and examples possible, this bestselling author teaches us that a single cosmic self feels and learns through us. Lucid texts and colorful images help us understand why our concept of the self is false, how to interpret eternity, and where to spot God. An enlightening journey for anyone from age 16 to 100 who is thrilled to learn.

For years, turmoil and pain in her family life caused deeply rooted unhappiness and dissatisfaction that bubbled over into every aspect of life and threatened to undo her. When her sister's medical emergency triggered Harrison's own health crisis and shed light on disturbing family dynamics, the situation compelled her to make brave and difficult choices-choices that ultimately led to emotional health, wholeness, and peace. With remarkable compassion and clarity, Harrison shares her own painful experiences with the hope of encouraging others who struggle to find their self-worth. Perfect for anyone who wants to find his or her gifts and to use them-especially in the face of hardship- A Place Called Peace offers hope, inspiration, and encouragement.

Book excerpt: His Holiness the Dalai Lama's teaching-a beautiful and accessible presentation of the time-honored path to enlightenment–is one of the world's great spiritual treasures. The Joy of Living and Dying in Peace underscores the importance of "practice"-of awareness through meditation, compassion, patience, and effort—in lending rich and joyous meaning to this lifetime, and so to our passage to the next. His Holiness the Dalai Lama offers his thoughts on achieving a meaningful life and death. At the heart of his eloquent presentation is this lesson: by cultivating compassion, wisdom, and positive thought and action-in short, by living a good life-we can approach death without fear or regret, and welcome our passage and rebirth. He teaches that the way to a peaceful death is to live a meaningful life by practicing love and compassion. The book also provide straightforward lessons on how to embrace death and impermanence, which ultimately leads to a life of peace, joy and spiritual fulfillment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for Peace and Crickets came to me one night as I sat outside in my rocking chair on my front porch. I was listening to how peaceful the crickets sounded chirping in the night. It was then that I felt like the Lord placed this story on my heart. Peace and Crickets is a beautiful story between a widowed father, whose wife died during childbirth and his only child, a daughter, Lizzy. Their journey through life together in small town Alabama is one that is filled with lots of laughter and tears. Though they both have many ups and downs through life, there is no problem that love, prayer, and a little time sitting on the front porch swing, listening to the crickets singing their nightly song can't fix.
