Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Picnic Party in Wildest Africa: Being a Sketch of a Winter's Trip to Some of the Unknown Waters of the Upper Nile Such experiences always leave pleasant memories behind them on the return home. It is then that one is best able to contrast the charm of existence in the wilds with the quiet pleasures of our conventional life at home - the neat little tent in which one passes one's time in the desert, the breeze whispering in the trees above, with the snug warm room at home; the cry of the night-bird, the wail of the hyena, and the splash of the crocodile in the water, for ever reminding us of the charm of nature and its simple pleasures, with the habitual sounds of the streets. A great part of the descriptions of the scenery and life on the Nile and Sobat rivers, are extracts from the journal of Mrs. Mc Millan, who most kindly put her notes at the disposal of the author. When such extracts are introduced they are placed between inverted commas, and the reader will have no diffi culty in distinguishing them from the rest of the book. Many of the engravings are from drawings taken on the spot by Mr. J essen, the engineer and surveyor to the expedition; and there are reproductions from photographs made by various members of the party. I also am much indebted to Mr. J essen, who has kindly consented to look over the proofs of the book during my absence from England. But there were women on those trips as well, and not just the trips to Africa, and they were often as successful at the hunt as the men. Women such as Lady Florence Dixie, Agnes Herbert, Osa Johnson, Grace Gallatin Seton, and Gladys Harriman hunted so well, they made names for themselves and wrote of their adventures. Divided into chapters detailing a specific time period, region hunted or individual woman, With Rifle and Petticoat explores the interesting women who hunted a variety of big game animals around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cattle Plague: A History is divided into five sections, dealing with the nature of the virus, followed by a chronological history of its occurrence in Europe from the Roman Empire to the final 20th century outbreaks; then administrative control measures through legislation, the principal players from the 18th century, followed by an analysis of some effects, political, economic and social. Then follows attempts at cure from earliest times encompassing superstition and witchcraft, largely Roman methods persisting until the 19th century; the search for a cure through inoculation and the final breakthrough in Africa at the end of the 19th century. The last section covers the disease in Asia and Africa. Appendices cover regulations now in force to control the disease as well as historical instructions, decrees and statutes dating from 1745-1878.
