Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the career development experiences of students with disabilities who participated in a unique collaborative program consisting of three university entities: Disabilities Services, Career Services, and the College of Education, as well as community-based service agency, the state vocational rehabilitation agency in the State of Michigan. Guided by the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and through semi-structured interviews with 12 participants, half alumni and half current students, this researcher collected information about how the Careers Collaborative services had assisted with the participants' career preparation and development, particularly in terms of their interaction with professional staff, how their personal and learning experiences impacted decisions related to their field of study, what role disability had in their decisions, and the supports and barriers perceived by the participants. For each of the six SCCT constructs, themes emerged that were described as follows. Construct 1 Self-Efficacy and themes: Soft Skills Attainment, Positive Outlook on Future Employment, Barriers and Supports, Educational and Professional Past Experiences. Construct 2 Learning Experiences and themes: Previous Academic Experiences, Work Experiences and Exploration, Personal Experiences, Impact of Others. Construct 3 Person Inputs and themes: Personality Characteristics, Effects of Disability, Educational Factors Influencing Career Path, Accommodations and Support Services in Higher Education. Construct 4 Outcome Expectations and themes: Participant's Employment Outlook, Future Plans are Guided by Expectations, Personal Fit of Job, Preparing for Potential Challenges. Construct 5 Interests and themes: Past Experiences, Personal Values, Passion, Autonomy. Construct 6 Personal/Choice Goals and themes: Continued Education or Training, Gain Experience, Active Engagement with Partners in the Careers Collaborative, Value-Driven Decision. The results of this study showed promising and positive outcomes of participants who received a program that supported and provided both academic and career-related services for college students with disabilities. It demonstrated that professionals of different specialties who work collaboratively are likely to maximize the outcomes. Implications for practice, future research, and education will be discussed.

Book excerpt: With the national focus in education turning to increasing student achievement and closing achievement gaps between demographic groups, federal and state policy has extended responsibility and high stakes accountability for student growth and achievement. Overall, student achievement status and elimination of achievement gaps between demographically defined sub-groups of students remain cornerstones of accountability under ESEA and now ESSA. Under the Obama Administration, however, accountability for academic growth was extended to individual classroom teachers and school and district-level administrators through federal policy provisions tying student growth to performance evaluation. As a result, many states, including Michigan, enacted legislation to mandate high stakes teacher and administrator evaluation be connected to student achievement. With statutory changes to the Michigan School Code enacted July 2011, Michigan came on board with performance ratings tied to student growth with implications for contract renewal, layoff, recall, and even compensation. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine how teachers responded to the shift to a high stakes individual accountability system and how they are making sense of the changes related to their individual professional practices and collegial collaborative practices. Specifically, I examined how teachers are experiencing the implementation of the legislated evaluation requirements in two areas: (1) influences on individual practice as a classroom teacher; and (2) impact on collegiality and collaboration with peers. I also explored how the teachers who participated in this study think about and take personal meaning from their experiences with the accountability measures embedded in the statutory provisions for teacher performance reviews, as well as the implications of those reviews for job security and compensation related to the student growth component required in the evaluation legislation. This phenomenological study included 14 practicing teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Participants responded to a criterion-based recruitment from a large pool of teachers in eastern mid-Michigan and participated in an online interview experience. Through an extensive, multi-layered, and recursive data analysis method utilizing open-coding and emergent analysis processes, I discovered and gave voice to four themes from the study participants: (a) teachers adjusted to a rubric system for performance evaluation purposes, (b) teachers adapted their professional practices following the implementation the high stakes accountability evaluations, (c) teachers discovered changes in their collaborative practices, and (d) teachers developed specific views on the inclusion of growth data in the performance evaluation system.

Book excerpt: Over the past century, career development centers across the nation have evolved from the vocational and placement centers of the 1920s towards an interdisciplinary operational model of today (Herr, 2013). The interdisciplinary model incorporates clinically certified practitioners (e.g., career counselors, social workers) with non-clinical career development to achieve organizational goals and metrics. These designations provide a different introduction, context, and points of understanding towards both career centers as organizations and the career development profession as a whole. This study explored the phenomenon of organizational socialization through a qualitative investigation of the experiences of 10 non-clinical career development practitioners. These practitioners held entry-level roles of employment in centralized career development centers across the Southeastern portion of the United States. Using a modified version of the Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen model of interpretative phenomenological analysis to ground the author and data analysis process (Moustakas, 1994), the study utilized questionnaires and an in-depth interview to answer the following question: how do non-clinical career development practitioners make sense of the organizational socialization experience? Based on the findings, the non-clinical career development practitioners make sense of their experiences through a self-generated process. The findings provide a contextual perspective on the experiences that can provide guidance and insight to managers and leaders of career development centers.

A qualitative methodology provided a detailed and rich understanding of the experiences of women in high-level leadership from the perspectives of women who have experienced leadership development or succession-planning programs. Twenty women in high-level leadership positions employed in for-profit organizations in the eastern United States were the focus of the study. The results revealed that while some aspects of the programs were effective, upon promotion to their high-level positions, most of the women leaders expressed a lack of preparation for their high-level positions. Key issues the women executives indicated were missing in existing leadership development and succession-planning programs were (a) on-the-job training, (b) lack of mentors, and (c) job rotation.

Book excerpt: Prior research shows that mid-career professionals experience more negative emotions such as regret, confusion, disappointment, frustration and anger than positive feelings. Yet, many mid-career professionals are flourishing in their careers and not experiencing such negativity. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of five professionals who self-identify as flourishing in mid-career. This study also addressed the literature gap concerning mid-career professionals who are flourishing. Prior studies did not utilize the up-to-date model of flourishing and specifically, Seligman's well-being theory and its PERMA-H (positive emotions, engagement, positive relationships, meaning, achievement, and positive physical health) model, to understand the elements that professionals perceive to have contributed to their flourishing and what role those elements have played in their flourishing. The researcher conducted virtual, unstructured interviews using open-ended questions. A purposive sampling strategy was used for this study, with data collected from a total of five interviews of participants from different professionals with ten-to-fifteen years of experience in the workforce who considered themselves to be flourishing. Through thematic analysis, five themes were found to describe how mid-career professionals experience the six elements of the PERMA-H model and what role those elements play in their flourishing. The five themes are: (a) interconnectedness of the PERMA-H elements; (b) carving out time; (c) continuous growth and life-long learning; (d) achievement if accompanied by other elements; and (e) character strength and virtues. The conclusions are: (a) the lived experiences of flourishing mid-career professionals suggest interconnectedness between all the PERMA-H elements, (b) flourishing mid-career professionals carve out time for meaningful things and relationships, (c) flourishing mid-career professionals demonstrate continuous growth and life-long learning, (d) while flourishing mid-career professionals value achievement, achievement needs to be accompanied by other PERMA-H elements, and (e) beyond the PERMA-H elements, flourishing mid-career professionals demonstrate character strengths and virtues. Conclusions related to flourishing during the mid-career years are presented. The study ends with recommendations for mid-career professionals on how to flourish and implications for organizational leaders on cultivating flourishing in the workplace.

Book excerpt: During the 21st century, the American labor force has experienced significant challenges (Savickas 2002, 2005; Savickas, Nota, Rossier, Dauwalder, Duarte, Guichard, Salvatore, Van Esbroeck, & Van Vianen, 2009). As the job market has become increasingly unstable and economy has drastically declined during this time period, how individuals construct career identities has changed (Savickas, 2002). Throughout career development literature, the higher education experience is posited as a crucial time period to forming a sense of career identity (Savickas et al., 2009). While this period of time poses developmental challenges for all students, researchers highlight student-athletes, a specific subset of individuals nested within the general student body, face additional challenges with respect to constructing meaningful career plans (Chartrand & Lent, 1992; Danish, Petitpas, & Hale, 1993). First, as student-athletes face an internal psychosocial struggle to balance dual roles as students and athletes during their higher education experience, they may fail to fully explore career opportunities that fall outside of sport (Adler & Adler, 1987; Baille & Danish, 1992, Chartrand & Lent, 1987; Danish et al., 1993). Second, as student-athletes experience academic clustering, a practice which funnels student-athletes to specific majors to maintain eligibility, they may fail to engage in meaningful career construction opportunities (Case, Greer, & Brown, 1987; Fountain & Finley, 2009; Renick, 1974). Subsequently, this internal struggle to balance dual roles and external barrier of academic clustering during the higher education experience influences how these individuals construct career plans in preparation for life after sport. In turn, this study looked at the life experiences of 29 senior student-athletes at a large highly-selective Midwestern university. The purpose of this phenomenological study was twofold: (a) to understand the career aspirations of these student-athletes as they approached the transition to life after sport; and (b) to learn what life experiences influenced these individuals throughout their processes of exploring, choosing, and preparing for career fields. This phenomenological study was framed from a constructivism epistemology and intrepretivism theoretical framework. A multiple semi-structured individual interview method was employed to examine how 21st century student-athletes constructed individual career paths. Data analyses were guided by Savickas' (2002) Career Construction theoretical framework. This study provided a proposed conceptual model to describe how individual student-athletes construct career paths. In addition, this study explored how Savickas' (2002) Career Construction Theory applies to student-athletes.
