Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to describe secondary teachers’ experiences implementing a secondary flipped classroom model (FCM) in the United States. A FCM is a framework wherein students work at their own pace and use in-class time for active learning activities. The following questions were researched: (a) How do secondary FCM teachers describe their lived experiences from implementing the FCM? (b) What benefits, if any, do secondary teachers describe from implementing the FCM? (c) What challenges, if any, do secondary teachers describe from implementing the FCM? (d) What necessary resources do teachers perceive important for successful implementation of the FCM? The theory guiding this study was the diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory, which helps uncover the processes involved with the spread of an innovation or idea in a specific social system. DOI aids in the analysis of technology acceptance and adoption patterns of teachers. Data collection included questionnaires, interviews, and virtual focus groups from 12 participants, selected because they successfully used the FCM for at least one year and collaborate via social media regarding their experiences. Data were collected and analysis included organizing, synthesizing, reduction, and enumeration to develop themes. In-depth explorations of the participants’ perceptions of the FCM provided rich descriptions and to answer the four research questions, five themes were identified: changes to planning and preparation, best practices, resources and tools, benefits of implementation, and gaining buy-in. Overall, although participants stated they experienced challenging situations with implementing the FCM, the benefits outweighed the challenges.

This study surveyed secondary educators from three suburban high school districts to examine how the strategy is being implemented by a cross-section of educators. Further, data was captured to investigate the likelihood of a teacher to implement the flipped classroom based on teacher, student, and classroom characteristics, the reasons why teachers are choosing not to utilize the flipped classroom, and teachers' overall beliefs about the flipped learning model.

All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: This study examines the implementation of the flipped classroom model in a local secondary school in Hong Kong. The flipped classroom is a relatively new educational model requiring teachers to invert the time students spend on lectures and the time students spend on homework. Although several studies conducted on this approach show improvements to student achievement as well as positive views from participating educators, parents and most students, there has been little research done based in Asian schools. For this design study, four geography classes of secondary one students in a local Hong Kong school were "flipped" for one full school term (4 months). Throughout the term, learning resources were posted to online educational platforms for students to access at home, and the teacher developed interactive activities for class time. This paper analyzes data from various summative assessments, statistics from the online platforms, student posts, video footage from the class, responses to a student survey and a teacher interview to examine four elements of the flipped classroom: the nature of the learning environment created to flip the classroom in a local Hong Kong secondary school; whether students could achieve or potentially improve outcomes of the course through flipped learning; whether flipped learning stimulated engagement from students with a particular focus on social constructivist behaviors; and, the sustainability of flipped teaching in a local Hong Kong school. Book excerpt: The Flipped Classroom is an instructional strategy that reverses the traditional classroom that is more teacher-directed learning, to an environment where it is more student-centred and the instructor acts a facilitator. This is achieved through technology, where students can access teacher instructional videos online through different media sources. Four secondary school mathematical teachers took part in the initial stages of the research study, where I conducted face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Out of the four participants, one participant went further with this research study, that included observing his class, viewing his videos, post interviews after each class, and perceptions of student surveys once the observation period was completed. The observation period took place over five months, which included reviewing instructional videos used in the participant's flipped classroom along with in-class observations of the participant's teaching. At the end of the observation period, students took an online survey based on their engagement and experiences regarding the flipped classroom. An exit interview was also conducted at the end of the observation period with this participant, in order to get a better understanding of their experiences and challenges within the flipped classroom. The themes reported as strengths of video instruction included: flipped classroom engagement, student interactions, and mitigating learner challenges. However, when identifying challenges, themes included: technology, lack of student engagement, time, and buy-in. The main four findings of this research are: (1) students were in favour of shorter video instruction; (2) videos that provided multiple examples with different levels of difficulty helped with learning; (3) students preferred a blend between the non-flipped classroom as well as a flipped classroom format; and (4) students benefited from having teacher-directed instruction at the beginning of class as a way to engage with the material. The flipped classroom is a model of teaching that could help teachers implement strategies that hold students accountable for their learning. The flipped classroom can provide opportunities for students to become more familiar and comfortable with the use of technology. Flipped learning can provide students that may struggle with mental health, like student anxiety, a pathway to learning through a combination of independent learning and reflection, collaboration, active learning and one-on-one conversations with their teacher.

Book excerpt: This mixed-methods research study explored teacher perceptions of flipped learning and the impact that the instructional method had on the cognitive rigor of classroom learning activities and student performance on standardized tests. The study utilized an electronically mailed survey and teacher interviews to explore perceptions of flipped instructional methods. The Hess Cognitive Rigor Matrix (Hess, 2006) was used to determine the cognitive rigor of classroom learning activities in eight flipped and four traditional classrooms over a period of twelve class sessions. The study also compared the results of student achievement on six standardized tests (AP, Keystone and PSSA Exams) in flipped and traditional sections from 2011-2016. Standardized test results were analyzed by comparing the proportion of students who passed each exam in flipped and traditional sections using a 2-proportion z test. Teachers expressed overall positive perceptions of flipped learning as a method of exposing students to course content and increasing opportunities for student engagement in active learning strategies. Data reported from the Cognitive Rigor Matrix suggested that learning activities in flipped classrooms rely more heavily on strategic thinking/reasoning, application and analysis than learning activities within traditional classrooms. Standardized testing results indicated that students from flipped classrooms achieved equal or higher proportions of passing scores than students in traditional sections in five of the six exams surveyed. Further research is necessary as instructional pedagogy within flipped classrooms is highly diverse and employs a broad spectrum of research-based practices.

These requirements along with increased educational technologies in schools have many teachers exploring the flipped classroom model of instruction. In a flipped classroom, educators flip direct classroom instruction and traditional homework or practice. Students might watch a lecture video at home covering a concept at home and then apply the concept to problems in class with the aid of the teacher or engage in collaborative application with their classmates. After almost two decades of teachers implementing this model and research, little of that research exists at grade levels 6-12, the grade range in which the majority of flipped classroom instructors report that they teach. Additionally, much of the research conducted at those levels involves either student perceptions of the model or the impact course grades. This study looked inside the flipped classrooms of seven middle and high school teachers from a variety of subject areas including mathematics, science, Spanish, and social studies. Data for the study were collected through interviews, lesson plans and materials, as well as through a classroom observation of each teacher in order to gain a rounded picture of what educational activities were taking place inside of flipped classrooms. Furthermore, this study sought to look at the teachers’ motivations for using the model and to see if more activities were taking place in their classrooms.

Using IPA provided the researcher contextualized accounts of this unprecedented event to the limited extant literature in the field. Results of the study provided unique insights for stake holders to develop future comprehensive professional development for STEM teachers to better support them in teaching STEM to ELs be it in person or online.

A second purpose of the study explored how faculty communicate authenticity in teaching in the online classroom through course design. Related to communicating authenticity through course design, this study explored how faculty use engagement tools and strategies in the online classroom. The overarching research question for this study was “How do faculty communicate their humanness in an online course?” The study was conducted at a State College in the Southeastern United States. Using semi-structured interviews and art-based inquiry, this study considered authenticity in teaching through the lens of person-centered learning and course design through the Community of Inquiry framework. This study found that experienced online faculty conceptualized authenticity from a professional and personal perspective as driven by a genuine concern for the learner. Carl Rogers’ theory of person-centered learning, as related to conditions for the educator, emerged throughout the thematic analysis of the data. Faculty reported various ways of communicating authenticity through course design. Faculty found the Learning Management System (LMS) to be robust and expressed an aversion to adopting Web 2.0 tools external to the LMS. Finally, though not related to the research question driving this study, faculty discussed the immense time and energy required to design and facilitate an engaging online classroom. Implications for practice include purposeful faculty development initiatives that support person-centered online course design and institutional support for the faculty and the learner.
