Book excerpt: When enlisted combat arms military service members return from deployment and enter or reenter the American workforce, they often find it challenging to explain their Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) positions and associated responsibilities and accomplishments to employers. Particularly in an economy that has gone from being prosperous to becoming stagnant and recessed in recent years, veterans have returned from military service to find increased competition for fewer jobs that are mostly at the lower end of the skill requirements and pay scale. Many service members have utilized higher education as career development to mitigate the transition from being a military service member to being a civilian employee. The purpose of this study was to explore, using hermeneutic phenomenology, the lived experiences and feelings of combat arms veterans about the transition process from higher education to the civilian work environment while allowing veterans to share their feelings about their experiences in their own words. The aim of this research was to better understand the veterans' perceptions of their career development transition to civilian employment in order to identify strategies to assist them through the transition and into civilian employment. Seven veterans of military service in the infantry were identified with purposeful sampling from the population of OEF/OIF veterans with combat arms MOSs pursuing higher education at a large southwestern university. Because there is no direct civilian employment correlate for the combat arms MOS, it necessitates that the participants identify new career directions. Participants were at least junior level in their education at the time of interview. Each participant was interviewed twice face-to-face with hermeneutic interviews conducted three weeks apart. Themes that emerged from my review of the research data are reflective of the phenomena occurring within the veteran participants' career development experiences as they move through and move out of higher education into civilian employment. The themes that emerged from the participants' stories of their experiences share common roots of power and have intertwining branches: new structures, new systems, and new relationships that impact the veterans' career development. Feelings of fear and hope about their career development and future civilian employment are part of the veterans' career transition process and experiences as illustrated in the data. This process and the constructs brought into relief from analysis provide the answers to the research questions posited about infantry veterans' experiences using higher education as career development for civilian employment. While they expressed a clear understanding of their skills and capabilities gained through military service that they believed should be of value in civilian employment, the participants also acknowledged their concerns and worries that their experiences and abilities to contribute in civilian employment would not be recognized. Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the essence of the experiences of combat veterans with significant combat exposure who successfully completed their bachelor’s degree through a private online program despite the presence of challenges related and unrelated to their combat exposure. For the purpose of this study, combat veteran was generally defined as a veteran of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or National Guard who served in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), or Operation New Dawn (OND). In addition, significant combat exposure was indicated by a score of “light-moderate” to “heavy” on the Combat Exposure Scale (CES). Educational resilience cycle and posttraumatic growth (PTG) were the two theories that guided this study. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, focus-groups, and document analysis. This study sought to answer four research questions: (1) How do combat veterans with significant combat exposure describe the experience of attaining their bachelor’s degree through an online program? (2) What challenges, if any, do participants describe they encountered as they pursued their online bachelor’s degree? (3) How do participants describe the experience of overcoming the challenges they identify to subsequently attain their online bachelor’s degree? (4) How do participants describe the impact of their combat experience(s) on their degree attainment? Transcendental phenomenological analysis was utilized to reveal two major themes that emerged from the data: It was (1) A Challenging Journey, and (2) A Fulfilling Journey. In addition to study findings and limitations, implications for stakeholders and recommendations for future research are presented.

Prior evidence suggests that various programs and resources (i.e. finances, resume writing) can aid military personnel upon their transition to civilian life. However, research focusing on the impact of transition and the experiences of identity reconstruction amongst military members is limited. The current study was designed to explore identity reconstruction amongst individuals who were transitioning from military to civilian life. Male participants (N = 10) were interviewed using a semi-structured interview format that addressed the following research questions: (a) What is the process of identity reconstruction during the transition from military to a civilian life? (b) what factors play a role in a successful transition from military to civilian life? (c) what factors may impede making a successful transition? (d) what is surprising about the transition? Results included several categories including the lack of purpose, becoming a leader of soldiers, strong support networks, the challenges of military culture, and preparation, as factors that impact an individual identity reconstruction and a successful transition into civilian life. Each category was broken down and discussed in this paper. These findings provide insight towards bringing more awareness of identity reconstruction, as well as information to better inform psychologists and various existing programs to be better suited to working with this unique population.

The research questions guiding this study include: (a) What do the stories of ex-military men and women seeking to re-enter the civilian job market tell us about the overall experience of navigating complex systems? b) What do these military veterans see as the most essential factors and strategies that have led to what they view as their successful job in the civilian workforce? The theoretical framework that guided this study is a combination of complexity theory, Schlossberg's transition model of adult development, and transformative learning theory. Qualitative data were collected through a long semi-structured Zoom interview, a shorter second interview where each participant shared a symbol of their military-to-civilian transition, and a self-created mind map as a visual representation of their transition journey. The findings reveal that the transition process is interconnected, and that success depends upon each veteran's situational context and personal characteristics. These veterans all used the strategies of: (a) planning ahead; (b) making and maintaining a network of connections, both civilian, military, and veterans; (c) leaning on family; (d) maximizing their military benefits, and (e) being open to change. Participants also shared how other veterans can fail to use these key strategies. Implications for theory, future research, and practice within the field of lifelong learning and adult education are discussed.

In an effort to develop a pilot course intended to help student veterans transition from the military to college, this qualitative study sought to evaluate existing university veteran transition programs and courses and determine factors that appear to be working at top military friendly institutions. To help examine the continuing need for and elements of a successful transition course for veterans, interviews were conducted with experts in the area of student veterans' transition, and a document review conducted to ascertain the type of veterans' success programs/courses currently available. This study found 1) that institutions of higher education can improve the success and retention of student veterans by offering courses that assist them in their transition to the academic environment and careers as civilians and 2) that there are gaps in existing programs and courses that can be filled by modifying, expanding, and combining currently existing courses. In an attempt to do so, the researcher designed a pilot course to help first year student veterans' transition into higher education and later the workplace. Specifically, the pilot course is designed with the primary focus of transitioning from military to college, making meaning of the transition and adding elements of civilian career exploration. The pilot course allows veterans to apply their military experiences to their future efforts as college students and civilians. This study adds to the research that has been conducted in the past decade into the lives and success (or lack thereof) of student veterans, and reiterates the need for higher education to create spaces for learning where student veterans are welcomed and supported. Because of their unique needs, which the pilot course seeks to meet, purposeful attempts by institutions of higher to improve the learning environment of student veterans will undoubtedly lead to an improved learning environment for all students.

To begin re-exploring the lived experiences of enlisted veterans who have transitioned back into the civilian world as full-time college students, I utilized blogs to collect narrative data about veterans who transitioned from the military into the full-time college setting. Blogs allow participants to both write about and share their stories with a community of peers. The data was analyzed using a constructivist-interpretist paradigm that gave "voice to participants' experiences by means of extensive quotation" (Fassinger, 2005, p. 157). Some of the general themes included a sense of feeling out of place and isolated; seeking out fellow veterans, especially in school veteran organizations, provided many with a feeling of normalcy and belonging; the experience of being disciplined in the military was often noted as an asset when in regards to school work; most were dissatisfied with the transition assistance programs the military offered; and most reported difficulties re-learning how to communicate and behave in civilian culture, among others. Findings from this study can help to further clarify the obstacles that college veterans experience as they readjust to life as civilians and college students.

Understanding the transition of individuals from military institutions to civilian life is of great importance. The essential elements of transition support are currently widely debated in order to assess current practice and potential shortcomings in the intention to improve health, welfare and social outcomes for military veterans. This text links original research and critical commentary to public policy and practice in the area of veteran transition. Doing so through a collection of international perspectives assists in locating continuity and difference between strategies, agendas and the realities of what is actually known of the veteran’s experience. Chapters in this text examine the subject of transition along lines of enquiry that focus in on themes such as social justice, veteran identity and developments in transition agendas. Globally, many veterans face complex social issues such as low income, barriers to employment, and problems of health and welfare. Chapters take stock of the real-world issues affecting veterans and at the same time casts a critical eye over the limitations in accessing, or denial of access to opportunities, support and remedy. The veteran identity is an important dimension of enquiry here. This book looks at the relational factors between the veteran and the public, the creation of a master status and the challenges faced by veterans in transitioning into a cultural context that is saturated with imagery of what a veteran ‘is’. Chapters also seek to pose recommendations as to how the policy and practice agenda that surrounds veterans and the bridging of the gap between military and civilian life may be developed. Here authors point towards the value of knowledge, research and analysis that is underpinned by participatory strategies with veterans themselves. For example, seeking to establish lines of enquiry that value the voice of veterans as an ongoing and iterative dimension of developing understanding.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of military veterans transitioning from service members to civilian life. The study was conducted using semistructured interviews with eight transitioning veterans who had completed their bachelor’s degree from the same Midwestern U. S. university between 2017 and 2022. Retention theory, and transition theory were used as the guiding theories for this study. An intrinsic qualitative case study was used for data analysis, which resulted in the emerging themes (a) Transitioning from Military Service to Civilian Life, (b) Work-Life-Study Balance: Confronting Challenges, and (c) Supporting Military Veterans. This study contributed to current research by exploring the systems of support needed for military veterans to successfully transition from the military to their civilian lives and successfully complete their higher education degrees. This study also provides insight into the obstacles faced by transitioning veterans such as reintegration with health concerns, changes and adjustments to the veteran’s geographic location, daily work routine changes, locating supportive resources, and reliance in family and social systems of support. This study contributed to current research by identifying campus and community resources that were used, or that were missing and needed during participants’ undergraduate studies. Among recommendations for future support was a mixed-methods study to review qualitative and quantitative data on the increased retention of military, a phenomenological study to focus on the common experiences of transitioning military veterans centered on participants’ gender, race, or socioeconomic status.
