Book Synopsis Penguins by : Pablo Garcia Borboroglu
Download or read book Penguins written by Pablo Garcia Borboroglu and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penguins, among the most delightful creatures in the world, are also among the most vulnerable. The fragile status of most penguin populations today mirrors the troubled condition of the southern oceans, as well as larger marine conservation problems: climate change, pollution, and fisheries mismanagement. This timely book presents the most current knowledge on each of the eighteen penguin species-from the majestic emperor penguins of the Antarctic to the tiny blue penguins of New Zealand and Australia, from the northern rockhopper penguins of the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans to the Galapagos penguins of the equator-written by the leading experts in the field. Included for each species: o Life history o Distribution, population sizes and trends o International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) status o Threats to survival o Legal protection The book also provides information on current conservation efforts, outlines the most important actions to be taken to increase each population's resilience, and recommends further research needed to protect penguins and the living creatures that share their environment. Beautifully illustrated with full-color photographs of each species in their natural habitat and detailed charts and graphs, Penguins will be an invaluable tool for researchers, conservation groups, and policy makers. It will also enchant anyone interested in the lives or the plight of these fascinating animals. Watch the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s0BbIU6cqE&feature=plcp

Book Synopsis The Patagonian Fishery Resources and the Offshore Fisheries in the South-west Atlantic by : J. Csirke
Download or read book The Patagonian Fishery Resources and the Offshore Fisheries in the South-west Atlantic written by J. Csirke and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1987 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of the main fishery resources exploited by the offshore fleets in the South-West Atlantic is examined and some suggestions are made regarding research and management of the offshore fisheries in the region. Common hake (Merluccius hubbsi) is mostly caught in the northern Patagonian Shelf and off the River Plate Basin area and the resource seems to be lightly to fully exploited. Southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) is mostly caught over the Patagonian Shelf and Slope around the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) and the resource seems to be lightly to moderately exploited. Shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) is mostly caught in the offshore Patagonian Shelf and Slope from the area off the River Plate to the northern part of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), the abundance and annual catches are highly variable and until 1985 the resource was reasonably exploited but it is likely that the increased fishing effort in 1986 may have driven the stock to an overfishing situation. A variable fishing effort policy is suggested to manage this fishery in view of the great fluctuations in recruitment strength. It seems that the common squid (Loligo sp.) stock is fully exploited with a high probability of becoming overexploited. Some general aspects regarding the state of other fish resources and of other possible effects of these offshore fisheries are also examined.
