Book excerpt: "It was a tragedy...that is the way I always answered people who asked about the scars on my neck...the scars left by my mother when she tried to kill me." In one day of incomprehensible terror, Tatyana lost her twin sister, Natasha, three younger sisters and a younger brother, all at the hands of their very own mother. Only Tatyana and her older half-brother, Sasha, would survive. Where there were once seven precious young lives just beginning to blossom...only two soul-scarred children remained. In A Pearl of Hope, follow Tatyana as she, Sasha and their father strive to rebuild their shattered lives, struggling to move from the dark shadow of their tortured past. Walk with her through the darkness of a troubled childhood, an adolescence that brought her to the brink of suicide, and into the light she found as she embraced God's restorative, healing love. "Tatyana's award-winning book, A Pearl of Hope, is a stark recounting of her once idyllic, then suddenly horrific childhood. Though shocking and disturbing, her story ultimately unfolds as an account of the victory of hope over despair, a triumph of good over evil. Through it all, God's love, redemptive power and faithfulness shine through." (Jim Kochenburger, best-selling Christian author and publisher.) The author writes, "The most important thing I want the reader to know is that when I look back on my life, the only reason I am still standing is because of my faith in God and obedience to His Word. That is all I can point to for enjoying the life I now live." Tatyana Alekseyevna is a happily married mother of two children, who currently resides in Georgia. She lives to pursue God with a whole heart and to serve Him every day of her life.

Book excerpt: “There it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon.” Like his father and grandfather before him, Kino is a poor diver, gathering pearls from the gulf beds that once brought great wealth to the Kings of Spain and now provide Kino, Juana, and their infant son with meager subsistence. Then, on a day like any other, Kino emerges from the sea with a pearl as large as a sea gull's egg, as "perfect as the moon." With the pearl comes hope, the promise of comfort and of security.... A story of classic simplicity, based on a Mexican folk tale, The Pearl explores the secrets of man's nature, the darkest depths of evil, and the luminous possibilities of love.

Book excerpt: Mariane Pearl started traveling the globe for Glamour magazine in 2006 to profile courageous women and show that hope is stronger than fear. During the first year of writing her monthly "Global Diary" column, Pearl logged nearly 100,000 miles and met 12 brave, determined women-true agents of change in their communities-who make the world a more just and harmonious place despite personal hardship, discouraging odds and even death threats. In Search of Hope: The Global Diaries of Mariane Pearl introduces readers to these everyday heroes. The limited-edition run of In Search of Hope features more than 200 previously unpublished images from Pearl's travels and updates on the women since they were first profiled in the magazine. Mariane's good friend, Angelina Jolie, who also portrays her in A Mighty Heart, has written a touching and personal tribute to Mariane as the foreword for In Search of Hope. Among some of the inspirational women readers will meet are Somaly Mam, a former child sex slave in Cambodia who now rescues girls from forced prostitution; Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first woman to be elected head of an African country; Lydia Cacho, the intrepid Mexican reporter who exposes violence against women and children despite repeated threats on her life; Sheila Watt-Cloutier, the Inuit leader and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee working toward the reverse of global warming; and Dr. Julian Atim, a Ugandan AIDS orphan-turned-doctor fighting for health rights in her country. "The women featured here are all different and their context varies widely, yet you will find the same active principle animating them. This is the ultimate value of hope," says Mariane Pearl. "These women teach us a lot about the power of human empathy and the value of beauty that emanates from them as they progress on this lonely yet magnificent path that will lead them to become a genuine source of hope for all people." "As anyone who's seen or read A Mighty Heart knows, Mariane is a woman of incredible personal strength," says Cindi Leive, Glamour editor-in-chief. "But as millions of Glamour readers have learned, she's also a fiercely committed journalist. She set out to find women who are changing the world-and the stories she's brought back, collected here for the first time, are the kind of personal profiles that alter your thinking forever." Mariane Pearl's acclaimed "Global Diary" column for Glamour has been featured in The New York Times and on CNN, and has been recognized as a National Headliner Award winner. Glamour will donate 100 percent of its proceeds and royalties from all books sold on glamour.com to charities selected by the women profiled.

Book excerpt: A Pearl is a short and easy book to read, but in and through its simplicity is a profound and life-changing message. In just a few pages Margaret Ann Miller relates the grief of her losses and the joys of her accomplishments. She takes you by the hand as she overcomes extreme physical, emotional and spiritual struggles. She exposes the reality of her seemingly idyllic childhood and the lies that she built her life on and had no reason to question. Then she takes hold of your heart and demonstrates the love of Jesus and the difference He made in her life. Most importantly, A Pearl leads you to examine the lies you have believed and may still cling to. It invokes you to analyze your priorities, evaluate your sense of pride, and come face-to-face with all that you take for granted. And then it challenges you to go further and look deeper into Jesus' eyes and ask yourself if you are willing to sell everything for a Pearl of great price.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE KNICKERBOCKER HOTEL Built between 1923 and 1925, the famous Hollywood Hotel Knickerbocker was in its early days, a mainstay in the life of Hollywood's most glorious celebrities. But, looking at this aging hotel on Ivar Avenue, you probably wouldn't guess that it had much of a Hollywood history. Similarly, looking at Earl Watson, an unassuming man, residing in Fresno, California, you probably wouldn't guess that he too, was a part of Hollywood's golden history. But, you'd be dead wrong. Hollywood's elite came to the Knickerbocker and was greeted by the ever-smiling Earl Watson. From 1946 to 1962, Watson worked as a doorman at the famed hotel. Where most people only dream of seeing such celebrities as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, Earl Watson rubbed elbows with them. Today, the Hotel Knickerbocker is an apartment house for senior citizens, but back in the 1920s, it was in the heart of Hollywood and played a key role in Tinsel town's history. The Hotel was closed and the rooms converted to apartments in 1971. In 1991, the hotel bar was re-opened as the "All Star Theatre Cafe And Speakeasy," a coffee house nestled in the plush atmosphere of a glamorous past. And although the entrance to the hotel is closed to the public, you can still look through the glassed doors and imagine the splendor and magic that was the Knickerbocker. Just as the All Star Theatre Café and Speakeasy allows the spectator to revisit Hollywood's elegant past, Earl Watson, doorman to the stars, can bring the past to life with his tales of hobnobbing with the Hollywood elite. His home in Fresno California is a museum filled with memorabilia of those days in Hollywood. But there is much more to Earl Watson, the man, who grew up in Chicago's South Side during the depression years. As a young man, he served proudly with the Armed Forces in Europe and fought in the fiercest battles of the war, first at Normandy and then in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of the Rhine River. There is more to this modest gentleman from Chicago than a story about the past vestiges of the Knickerbocker and the famous people who lived there. It is the story of lives interwoven in the tapestry of Hollywood's grandeur as seen and experienced by the always-smiling Earl of the Knickerbocker Hotel. Just ask E Entertainment, the worldwide syndicated television show out of Hollywood. They wanted to do a piece about Hollywood and the old Knickerbocker Hotel. They went to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and were referred to Johnny Grant, who had been the mayor of Hollywood for many years. When they contacted Johnny Grant, he told them that they should call "Earl Watson" because he was there in that era. They contacted Earl and set up an interview in his home in Fresno, California. They spent a couple of hours with Earl and collected 55 years of history. Writers who did not know the hotel or the employees have written many untrue stories about the Hotel over the years . but Earl Watson lived it.

Book excerpt: A huge success in its original black and white format, Good and Evil has been reprinted larger and exquisitely colorized. Good and Evil is Gods redemption plan told chronologically from Genesis to Revelation. The 324-page book written by Michael Pearl and illustrated by Danny Bulanadi, former of Marvel Comics (Incredible Hulk), resembles an oversized comic book. Good and Evil begins where God began, in the book of Genesis, with the Creator, the fall of man, the law, blood sacrifice, and the prophecies of the coming Redeemer, thus preparing the people to fully understand the gospel of Christ. Good and Evil captivates those who would not normally pick up a Bible. In addition to the color art, each page footnotes Scriptural passages for further Bible study. Young and old, teens, prisoners, military personnel, and Christian workers have testified to the incredible impact Good and Evil has made on their understanding of the Bible.
