Book excerpt: Our purpose is to identify those atmospheric conditions that lead to thunderstorm electrification. We have collected aircraft and radar measurements of atmospheric parameters made during several recent intensive field studies, and we are modifying our thunderstorm model to make it more realistic. The radar measurements will be used as inputs to the model and we will attempt in-cloud microphysical, dynamical and electrical behavior in a range of atmospheric environments. As our simulations evolve, we will examine the relationships between atmospheric sounding parameters and subsequent electric field development and we will classify soundings in terms of parameters relevant for lightning production.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to pursue further understanding of cloud electrification through three separate projects. First, radar observational data of New Mexico thunderstorm activity combined with a numerical thunderstorm model suggests that the degree of thunderstorm electrification depends on the time during which strong updrafts remain within the charging zone. Second, a simple numerical lightning model representing streamer propagation on a 2-D grid was developed. Realistic streamer paths evolve in the model and the conditions for IC and CG strokes are directly related to updraft velocity. Third, a simple cloud model was utilized to investigate factors influencing lightning frequency and its relationship to precipitation. Lightning and lightning frequency are shown to heavily depend on the depth of the charging region which is sensitive to vertical velocity.

Book excerpt: Airborne electric field sensing and computing systems have been developed and flown on C-130, F-100F, RF4C, and U-2 aircraft for studies of shower, cloud, and thunderstorm charge centers. Examples are given of the proper separation of field components and aircraft charge during thunderstorm penetrations and during direct lightning strikes to the test aircraft. Techniques have been employed for roll compensation of the aircraft-fixed field components so that real-time vector displays indicating the centroid of near-by charge concentrations are available for use in avoidance of probable lightning areas, or for use in selecting them to maximize the probability of a strike to test aircraft during lightning-aircraft interaction studies. The development of the storm electrical structure is directly related to details of the cloud water and ice distribution linked through the thermal and draft structure in the storm. Major features of the internal electrical pattern are often seen in data taken above, alongside, or at the surface. However, in accordance with electrostatic field theory, many of the fine structural details found within the storm are suppressed outside. The major vertical component field pattern is found to be one that could be produced by simple tilted dipolar charge structures. Depending on the physical conditions in different regions of the storm, the upper excess charge of the dipole may be either positive as generally reported from surface observations of the field, or it may be negative, as found in a number of the U-2 storm overflights accomplished in this project. Clouds and precipitating mesoscale systems represent some of the most important and scientifically exciting weather systems in the world. These are the systems that produce torrential rains, severe winds including downburst and tornadoes, hail, thunder and lightning, and major snow storms. Forecasting such storms represents a major challenge since they are too small to be adequately resolved by conventional observing networks and numerical prediction models. Provides a complete treatment of clouds integrating the analysis of air motions with cloud structure, microphysics, and precipitation mechanics Describes and explains the basic types of clouds and cloud systems that occur in the atmosphere-fog, stratus, stratocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrus, thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts, orographically induced clouds, mesoscale convection complexes, hurricanes, fronts, and extratropical cyclones Summarizes the fundamentals, both observational and theoretical, of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, cloud microphysics, and radar meteorology, allowing each type of cloud to be examined in depth Integrates the latest field observations, numerical model simulations, and theory Supplies a theoretical treatment suitable for the advanced undergraduate or graduate level, as well as post-graduate

This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ice crystal-graupel collision charging mechanism, which is considered important in thunderstorm electrification, was studied using a newly developed Triple Interaction Facility. The facility is the first to allow independent control of the solid, liquid and vapor phases of a simulated cloud. The charge transferred to a riming target by collisions with ice crystals was measured over a wide range of cloud conditions. It was found that the charge transfer was a function of the temperature and the effective liquid water content of the cloud. It was also found that the charge transfer to the target was extremely sensitive to the relative humidity at which the ice crystals were grown. Higher relative humidity always promoted stronger negative charging, while lower humidity led to weaker negative or stronger positive charging. The sensitivity of the charge transfer to relative humidity was greatest at temperatures between-13°C and-18°C, with the strongest negative charging observed near-15°C. Within this temperature range the average charge transferred to the target could be varied from +5 fC per ice crystal collision to -25 fC per collision by varying the humidity from ice to water saturation, respectively. In experiments performed at humidities near water saturation and at temperatures near -15°C, charge transfers greater than -60 fC per collision were observed within the first 30 seconds after ice crystals are initiated. It was also found that at high relative humidity the maximum negative charge transferred to the target occurred at a velocity of 5m s-1 and was much weaker at 3, 4 and 6 m s-1. A parameterization of the results is presented for use in numerical thunderstorm models. Analysis of the data indicates that a competition between negative charge transfer between the liquid-like' layers of the colliding ice particles and positive charge transfer due to different dislocation densities can provide a consistent physical model of the effect of relative humidity. It is shown that differences in. the relative humidity can explain quantitatively the discrepancies between the observations of previous investigators. A new conceptual model of thunderstorm electrification is also presented.
