Book excerpt: A procedure was developed for modeling wind tunnel flows using computational fluid dynamics. Using this method, a numerical study was undertaken to explore the effects of solid wind tunnel wall proximity and Reynolds number on a two-dimensional airfoil model at low speed. Wind tunnel walls are located at varying wind tunnel height to airfoil chord ratios and the results are compared with freestream flow in the absence of wind tunnel walls. Discrepancies between the constrained and unconstrained flows can be attributed to the presence of the walls. Results are for a Mach Number of 0.25 at angles of attack through stall. A typical wind tunnel Reynolds number of 1,200,000 and full-scale flight Reynolds number of 6,000,000 were investigated. At this low Mach number, wind tunnel wall corrections to Mach number and angle of attack are supported. Reynolds number effects are seen to be a consideration in wind tunnel testing and wall interference correction methods. An unstructured grid Navier-Stokes code is used with a Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model. The numerical method is described since unstructured flow solvers present several difficulties and fundamental differences from structured grid codes, especially in the area of turbulence modeling and grid generation. Book excerpt: A numerical investigation of unsteady wind tunnel and ground interference effects is carried out in the time domain to study the transonic flutter characteristics of the NLR 7301 section inside a wind tunnel and the thrust generation characteristics of a NACA 0014 airfoil plunging near a ground plane. A parallelized, multi-block, deforming grid, unsteady flow-solver is coupled with a two-degree-of-freedom structural model. For the transonic flutter problem, two types of porous-wall boundary-conditions are implemented and tested for the boundaries representing the tunnel walls. The type of porous boundary condition is found to influence significantly both steady and unsteady solutions. Results show that the free-flight flutter behavior may differ significantly from the behavior found in a porous wind tunnel because of the strong dependence on the tunnel porosity parameter and the proximity of the walls. An analysis of the trailing edge boundary condition is performed for the airfoil in ground effect. The computations show that this boundary condition influences the solution only when non-linearities are present in the flow-field, although parameters averaged through a cycle of oscillation are not affected significantly. The same behavior is observed for the influence of the turbulence model on the fully-turbulent, unsteady computations. However, the best agreement with low Reynolds number, experimental data is obtained when the flow is assumed laminar and no turbulence model is applied.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 36 (thesis year 1991) a total of 11,024 thesis titles from 23 Canadian and 161 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 36 reports theses submitted in 1991, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to investigate the utility of the Calspan self-correcting wind tunnel for minimizing or eliminating wall interference effects in two-dimensional transonic flows when shock waves from the test model extend to the tunnel walls. This report summarizes the experimental research performed with two-dimensional airfoils in the Calspan self-correcting wind tunnel and the theoretical research accomplished in support of the experiments. The experiments were performed with airfoil models having 4% and 6% solid blockage. The initial experiments with the 6%-blockage model were devoted to determining a practical mode of operation when shock waves from the model extend to the wall. The most practical model is to use wall control to obtain the desired distribution of longitudinal velocity components for subcritical walls. The Mach number is then increased and the wall control is readjusted, sequentially, until the desired test condition is achieved. At the high Mach numbers of interest, however, the available wall control was limited locally, and tunnel system changes were required. A method is reported for analyzing self-correcting wind tunnels with porous walls.
