Book excerpt: "Numerical simulations of a full three-dimensional hemispherical body in hypersonic flow are conducted and innovative techniques involving forward injection of gas from the stagnation point of the sphere are investigated; techniques include annular (ring) and swirled injection both with and without upstream energy deposition. Objectives of the analysis are the assessment of 1) drag reductions achieved on the blunt body (including the detrimental drag effect caused by the forward-facing injection itself) and 2) stability characteristics of the jet. Studies are conducted at free-stream Mach numbers of 10 and 6.5 at standard atmospheric conditions corresponding to 30 km altitude. While centered forward injection without upstream energy deposition is confirmed to be highly unstable either with or without swirl, annular ring injection exhibits a stabilizing influence on the jet. Energy deposition upstream of the body is shown to significantly enhance stability and penetration of the forward injection jet for all techniques"--Abstract, p. iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent drag reduction by additives has long been a hot research topic. This phenomenon is inherently associated with multifold expertise. Solutions of drag-reducing additives are usually viscoelastic fluids having complicated rheological properties. Exploring the characteristics of drag-reduced turbulent flows calls for uniquely designed experimental and numerical simulation techniques and elaborate theoretical considerations. Pertinently understanding the turbulent drag reduction mechanism necessities mastering the fundamentals of turbulence and establishing a proper relationship between turbulence and the rheological properties induced by additives. Promoting the applications of the drag reduction phenomenon requires the knowledge from different fields such as chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, municipal engineering, and so on. This book gives a thorough elucidation of the turbulence characteristics and rheological behaviors, theories, special techniques and application issues for drag-reducing flows by surfactant additives based on the state-of-the-art of scientific research results through the latest experimental studies, numerical simulations and theoretical analyses. Covers turbulent drag reduction, heat transfer reduction, complex rheology and the real-world applications of drag reduction Introduces advanced testing techniques, such as PIV, LDA, and their applications in current experiments, illustrated with multiple diagrams and equations Real-world examples of the topic’s increasingly important industrial applications enable readers to implement cost- and energy-saving measures Explains the tools before presenting the research results, to give readers coverage of the subject from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints Consolidates interdisciplinary information on turbulent drag reduction by additives Turbulent Drag Reduction by Surfactant Additives is geared for researchers, graduate students, and engineers in the fields of Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Turbulence, Chemical Engineering, Municipal Engineering. Researchers and practitioners involved in the fields of Flow Control, Chemistry, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Experimental Fluid Dynamics, and Rheology will also find this book to be a much-needed reference on the topic.

Book excerpt: Aerodynamic Heating in Supersonic and Hypersonic Flows: Advanced Techniques for Drag and Aero-heating Reduction explores the pros and cons of different heat reduction techniques on other characteristics of hypersonic vehicles. The book begins with an introduction of flow feature around the forebody of space vehicles and explains the main parameters on drag force and heat production in this region. The text then discusses the impact of severe heat production on the nose of hypervelocity vehicles, different reduction techniques for aerodynamic heating, and current practical applications for forebody shock control devices. Delivers valuable insight for aerospace engineers, postgraduate students, and researchers. Presents computational results of different cooling systems for drag and heat reduction around nose cones Explains mechanisms of drag reduction via mechanical, fluidic, and thermal systems Provides comprehensive details about the aerodynamics of space vehicles and the different shock features in the forebody of super/hypersonic vehicles Describes how numerical simulations are used for the development of the current design of forebody of super/hypersonic vehicles

Book excerpt: A comprehensive technical treatise is provided on the aerodynamics of bodies of revolution from transonic to hypersonic speeds, covering all aspects of the subject, including transonic flow, linearized supersonic flow, Newtonian flow, rarefield gas and free-molecule flow, skin friction, heat transfer, and mass transfer. This English translation of a unique Russian textbook is provided with some corrections, references for all sources the editor could identify, redrawn figures, and an editor's introduction to each chapter summarizing and referencing pertinent material that has appeared since 1964, when the second edition was published. Krasnov's general approach assumes knowledge of the basic gas dynamic equations and applies them to solve aerodynamic problems. All important methods and techniques in modern aerodynamic theory are developed, with the aim of presenting practical methods for solving engineering problems. Results are usually given in the form of working equations, graphs, tables, or detailed sequential calculation methods. (Author).

It assumes no prior familiarity with either subject on the part of the reader. If you have never studied hypersonic and/or high-temperature gas dynamics before, and if you have never worked extensively in the area, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drag reduction tests were conducted on the LASRE/X-33 flight experiment. The LASRE experiment is a flight test of a roughly 20-percent scale model of an X-33 forebody with a single aerospike engine at the rear. The experiment apparatus is mounted on top of an SR-71 aircraft. This paper suggests a method for reducing base drag by adding surface roughness along the forebody. Calculations show a potential for base drag reductions of 8 to 14 percent. Flight results corroborate the base drag reduction, with actual reductions of 15 percent in the high-subsonic flight regime. An unexpected result of this experiment is that drag benefits were shown to persist well into the supersonic flight regime. Flight results show no overall net drag reduction. Applied surface roughness causes forebody pressures to rise and offset base drag reductions. Apparently the grit displaced streamlines outward, causing forebody compression. Results of the LASRE drag experiments are inconclusive and more work is needed. Clearly, however, the forebody grit application works as a viable drag reduction tool.
