Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive study on a new class of branched polymers, known as hyperbranched polymers (HBPs). It discusses in detail the synthesis strategies for these particular classes of polymers as well as biocompatible and biodegradable HBPs, which are of increasing interest to polymer technologists due to their immense potential in biomedical applications. The book also describes the one-pot synthesis technique for HBPs, which is feasible for large-scale production, as well as HBPs’ structure-property relationship, which makes them superior to their linear counterparts. The alterable functional groups present at the terminal ends of the branches make HBPs promising candidates in the biomedical domain, and the book specifically elaborates on the suitable characteristic properties of each of the potential biological HBPs’ applications. As such, the book offers a valuable reference guide for all scientists and technologists who are interested in using these newly developed techniques to achieve faster and better treatments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperbranched polymers have unique physical and chemical properties that make them interesting to people in both academia and industry. One way to make hyperbranched polymers is to use self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP). Hyperbranched polymethacrylates can be prepared from methacrylate inimers (inimers are monomers that contain both initiation and polymerizable groups) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP). The methyl methacrylate inimer was synthesized by reacting the carboxylic acid group of 2-bromo-3-hydroxy-2- methylpropionic acid with methacrylic acid and esterifying the alcohol group with methanol.4 This methyl methacrylate inimer was then polymerized under atom transfer radical polymerization conditions. Post-polymerization functionalization is often used to change and/or improve the properties of polymers. For hyperbranched polymers made by atom transfer radical polymerization, the halogen atoms (chlorine or bromine) remaining in the polymer backbone provide sites for post-polymerization functionalization. The halogen atoms in polymethacrylates are bonded to tertiary carbons, which are more hindered and less electrophilic than the halogen sites in hyperbranched polyacrylates, but are presumably more susceptible to cationic rearrangement. The hyperbranched poly(methyl methacrylate) is rearrangeable with heating and to give a primary bromine.

Book excerpt: A number of nitroxide adducts and N-acyloxytrialkylammonium salts were prepared, isolated, characterized and evaluated as initiators for the controlled and living free radical polymerization of methacrylate and dimethacrylate monomers under mildly thermal and photochemical conditions. The initiators and polymerization methods that were developed could potentially be used for improving resins employed in dental applications. Using very easy synthesis strategies, the following nitroxide initiators were prepared in high purity, isolated and characterized: 1-Benzoylperoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine (BPO/TEMPO), 1-(2'-Cyano-2'-propoxy)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (AIBN/TEMPO), 1,1-ditertbutyl-1-(1-methyl-1-cyanoethoxy)-amine (AIBN/DBN), 1,1-ditertbutyl-1-(benzoylperoxy)-amine (BPO/DBN) and 2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl-4-oxo-1-(1-methyl-1-cyanoethoxy)-piperidine (AIBN/4-OXO-TEMPO). Using H2SO4 additive and an improved unimolecular initiation in nitroxide mediated polymerization, living and controlled polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), tri-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and ethoxylated bisphenol A dimethacrylate (EBPADMA) were accomplished, for the first time ever for most of the initiators. Linear polymers (PMMA) were produced in high yield (93 %) under mildly thermal conditions (T = 70 oC) and with excellent attributes: (PDI = 1.04-1.26), Mn (87000), Tg (122-128 oC), Td (290-410 oC). Highly crosslinked polymers, poly(TEGDMA) and poly(EBPADMA), were produced in high yield (100 %) with Td (350-400 oC). The initiators were stable for a year and half at 0 oC. Two routes were investigated for the preparation of N-acyloxytrialkylammonium salts. The more efficient of these routes was used to make several novel analogs of the salts. The salts were evaluated for the free radical polymerization of MMA, TEGDMA and EBPADMA under mildly thermal (T = 60 oC) conditions with and without H2SO4 additive. Polymerization rate, yield and polymer attributes all improved upon application of H2SO4 additive. PMMA was produced with excellent attributes (PDI = 1.01-1.06), Mn (96,000-122000), Td (330-385) and Tg (127-134). Highly crosslinked poly(TEGDMA) and poly(EBPADMA) were produced with Td ranges of 300-374 oC and 375-411 oC respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functionalized polymers are macromolecules to which chemically bound functional groups are attached which can be used as catalysts, reagents, protective groups, etc. Functionalized polymers have low cost, ease of processing and attractive features for functional organic molecules. Chemical reactions for the introduction of functional groups in polymers and the conversion of functional groups in polymers depend on different properties. Such properties are of great importance for functionalization reactions for possible applications of reactive polymers. This book deals with the synthesis and design of various functional polymers, the modification of preformed polymer backbones and their various applications.
