Book excerpt: Closed loop instability caused by excess phase lag induced by actuator rate limiting has been suspected in many pilot-induced oscillations (PIOs) and oscillatory departures from controlled flight. As part of the joint AFIT/TPS program, a longitudinal pilot command notch filter activated by a real- time oscillation verifier (ROVER) algorithm was developed to eliminate the PIO source for any developing, severe PIO. Closed loop computer simulations were conducted to prepare for the flight test. The HAVE ROVER flight test project was flown using the NF-16D Variable Stability In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA). A programmable heads-up display (HUD) was used to generate a tracking task simulating Category A fighter maneuvers. 6 of the 12 evaluation sorties were flown against an airborne target aircraft. Flight test results showed the stick filter was pivotal in preventing aircraft oscillatory departures and suppressing PIOs. With the original threshold settings, the ROVER algorithm correctly characterized pilot observations of the aircraft motion 72% of the time. Further analysis indicated that a high false detection rate was responsible for this relatively low correct detection rate. These results suggested that the threshold values used by ROVER to detect PIO were set too low. By varying the threshold values as part of a parametric study, a maximum overall correct detection rate of 82% was attained.

Book excerpt: Rate limiting has been a causal or contributing factor for Pilot Induced Oscillations (PIO). As part of the joint Air Force Institute of Technology/Test Pilot School (AFIT/TPS) program, an examination of the Open-Loop Onset Point (OLOP) criterion, developed by DLR German Aerospace, was conducted to see if it could predict PIO due to rate limiting and to evaluate its potential as a design tool. The criterion was applied to three previous flight test programs involving rate limiting. Findings from this analysis led to the HAVE OLOP flight test which was flown on the NF-16D Variable Stability In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA). HAVE OLOP evaluated four longitudinal configurations with rate limiting elements inside the feedback loop. OLOP was found to over-predict PIO in some cases when using maximum stick amplitude as DLR suggests. When using actual stick amplitudes, correlation between OLOP predictions and PIO ratings was good. A new metric called stick ratio was developed to help explore the full range of stick amplitudes when using OLOP. OLOP could be a useful design tool, but because of the strong influence of stick amplitude, engineering judgement would have to be exercised. Recommendations on its use as a design tool are presented.

Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Aircraft are dynamical systems, which naturally contain a variety of constraints and nonlinearities such as, e.g., maximum permissible load factor, angle of attack and control surface deflections. Taking these limitations into account in the design of control systems is becoming increasingly important as the performance and complexity of the aircraft is constantly increasing. The aeronautical industry has traditionally applied feedforward, anti-windup or similar techniques and different ad hoc engineering solutions to handle constraints on the aircraft. However these approaches often rely on engineering experience and insight rather than a theoretical foundation, and can often require a tremendous amount of time to tune. In this thesis we investigate model predictive control as an alternative design tool to handle the constraints that arises in the flight control design. We derive a simple reference tracking MPC algorithm for linear systems that build on the dual mode formulation with guaranteed stability and low complexity suitable for implementation in real time safety critical systems. To reduce the computational burden of nonlinear model predictive control we propose a method to handle the nonlinear constraints, using a set of dynamically generated local inner polytopic approximations. The main benefit of the proposed method is that while computationally cheap it still can guarantee recursive feasibility and convergence. An alternative to deriving MPC algorithms with guaranteed stability properties is to analyze the closed loop stability, post design. Here we focus on deriving a tool based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming for analysis of the closed loop stability and robust stability of linear systems controlled with MPC controllers. To test the performance of model predictive control for a real world example we design and implement a standard MPC controller in the development simulator for the JAS 39 Gripen aircraft at Saab Aeronautics. This part of the thesis focuses on practical and tuning aspects of designing MPC controllers for fighter aircraft. Finally we have compared the MPC design with an alternative approach to maneuver limiting using a command governor.
