Book Synopsis Catholics in Contemporary Britain by : Ben Clements
Download or read book Catholics in Contemporary Britain written by Ben Clements and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholics in Contemporary Britain showcases findings from a wide-ranging, empirical study of Catholics living in Britain. It offers a sociologically-informed study, placing the contemporary Catholic community in the wider contexts of their society and the global faith of which they are a part. The book has been animated by a set of compelling broader questions : Who are the Catholics in Britain? How do they engage with their faith and with the Church? What do they think about issue within, and the leadership of, their Church? What are their views on wider social issues and of the party-political landscape? The study is thematically broad in scope, focusing on demography, religiosity (addressing the three 'Bs' of 'believing', 'belonging', and 'behaving'), social-moral issues, church leadership and schooling, and party support and voting behaviour. The book presents a rich and fascinating demographic, religious, and attitudinal profile of Britain's Catholics in the 21st Century.
Book Synopsis Arthur Upham Pope and A New Survey of Persian Art by : Yuka Kadoi
Download or read book Arthur Upham Pope and A New Survey of Persian Art written by Yuka Kadoi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arthur Upham Pope and A New Survey of Persian Art, fourteen scholars explore the legacy of Arthur Upham Pope (1881–1969) by tracing the formation of Persian art scholarship and connoisseurship during the twentieth century. Widely considered as a self-made scholar, curator, and entrepreneur, Pope was credited for establishing the basis of what we now categorize broadly as Persian art. His unrivalled professional achievement, together with his personal charisma, influenced the way in which many scholars and collectors worldwide came to understand the art, architecture and material culture of the Persian world. This ultimately resulted in the establishment of the aesthetic criteria for assessing the importance of cultural remains from modern-day Iran. With contributions by Lindsay Allen, Sheila S. Blair, Jonathan M. Bloom, Talinn Grigor, Robert Hillenbrand, Yuka Kadoi, Sumru Belger Krody, Judith A. Lerner, Kimberly Masteller, Cornelia Montgomery, Bernard O’Kane, Keelan Overton, Laura Weinstein, and Donald Whitcomb.

Book Synopsis Primogeniture and Entail in England by : Zouheir Jamoussi
Download or read book Primogeniture and Entail in England written by Zouheir Jamoussi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history and literary representation of one of the most idiosyncratic aspects of English socio-economic history, namely primogeniture as a rule governing the succession to landed estates. This double approach roughly covers the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Although this inheritance custom usually made the elder son sole heir to the whole paternal estate, to the exclusion and sometimes the utter impoverishment of the other children, and was therefore denounced as unjust and against nature, it also had its unflinching supporters. Indeed there was enough weight in the socio-political arguments of the latter to explain why this custom continued to dominate English social life for so long. This fundamental contradiction was at the heart of an ideological debate in which the plight of younger sons and the relationship between the individual, the nuclear and patrilineal family were among the issues permanently discussed. Neither were these issues the only hotly debated primogeniture-related questions. Indeed there was not one major economic, social and political development throughout the period examined to which primogeniture and entail did not directly or indirectly relate. The survey of the ideological debate on primogeniture and entail undertaken here is, to our knowledge, unprecedented. Moreover, primogeniture and entail were perceived by playwrights and novelists as a major cultural phenomenon and treated as such. The overview of their literary representation attempted here is, we believe, also unprecedented. As may be expected, emphasis throughout this book is laid on the interaction between history and literature.

Book Synopsis The Book World by : Nicola Louise Wilson
Download or read book The Book World written by Nicola Louise Wilson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British literature underwent profound changes in the period 1900-1940. What role did audiences and channels of book distribution play in this? In this wide-ranging collection, the influence of publishers, distributors, librarians and readers come to the foreground to open up new perspectives on literature and print culture. Rooted in original archival research, chapters include studies of the engagement of canonical writers and bestsellers with the literary marketplace; the influence of international and mobile audiences; publishing practices involving genre, promotion, and censorship; and the significance of spaces of reading including bookshops, circulating libraries and on-board passenger ships. Through a series of detailed case-studies that focus on under-explored aspects of distribution and readership, the contributors open up new perspectives on literature and the British book trade.

Book Synopsis British Sociologists and French 'Sociologues' in the Interwar Years by : Baudry Rocquin
Download or read book British Sociologists and French 'Sociologues' in the Interwar Years written by Baudry Rocquin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comparative study of the development of sociology in Britain and France between 1920 and 1940, taking a broad definition of the discipline to examine divergence across the channel in the interwar years. Rocquin charts the tension between differing schools of thought, presenting an alternative history of Europe based on cultural and intellectual struggle, and variation in theoretical visions of society - a divide that is still crucial in understanding the present situation between Continental Europe and the United Kingdom. This is a compelling addition to the history of sociology, and will be of interest to students and scholars across history, historical sociology, politics, European studies, and the sociology of knowledge.
