Book excerpt: Abstract : A new fit of the pion parton distribution functions is provided. Only valence quark distributions are used at a low evolution scale and are evolved with the modified Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi equation which is briefly introduced in this work, and the sea quark and gluon distributions are only generated by the quantum chromodynamics processes. We find that the parton distributions can explain the pion-nucleon experiments data well, and it can also be compared with the data from the leading neutron data of experiments at HERA. The momentum distributions among the partons are discussed and our results are consistent with some models.

Book excerpt: We analyze the moments of parton distribution functions in the pion calculated in lattice QCD, paying particular attention to their chiral extrapolation. Using the lowest three non-trivial moments calculated on the lattice, we assess the accuracy with which the x-dependence of both the valence and sea quark distributions in the pion can be extracted. The resulting valence quark distributions at the physical pion mass are in fair agreement with existing Drell-Yan data, but the statistical errors are such that one cannot yet confirm (or rule out) the large-x behavior expected from hadron helicity conservation in perturbative QCD. One can expect, however, that the next generation of calculations in lattice QCD will allow one to extract parton distributions with a level of accuracy comparable with current experiments.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parton distribution functions (PDFs) are important to characterize the structure of the hadrons such as protons and neutrons. The contribution to the structure from quarks has been studied in detail during the past few decades. The structure in the gluon sector is also important but less studied. For high-energy hadrons, the gluon contribution dominates at small x, where x is the momentum fraction carried by a quark or gluon. At large x, the uncertainty of the gluon PDF is large, especially compared to that of the quark PDFs at large x. Gluon PDFs for nucleons and pions are mostly extracted from global analysis of experimental data using perturbation theory as a guide. Theoretically, lattice QCD provides an independent non-perturbative theoretical approach to calculate the gluon PDFs. We present the exploratory study of nucleon gluon PDFs from lattice QCD using the quasi-PDF approach. Using valence overlap fermions on the 2 + 1-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge ensemble, the quasi-PDF matrix elements we obtain agree with the Fourier transform of the global-fit PDF within statistical uncertainty. We further study the x-dependent nucleon and pion gluon distributions via the pseudo-PDF approach on lattice ensembles with 2 + 1 + 1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) generated by the MILC Collaboration. Using clover fermions for the valence action, and adding momentum smearing, PDFs are found for pion boost momenta up to 2.56 9́8 GeV. Several lattice sizes and spacings (a 9́8 0.9, 0.12 and 0.15 9́8 fm) were evaluated, resulting in three pion masses, MÏ0 9́8 220, 310 and 690 9́8 MeV/c2.

Download or read book Multiple Parton Interactions at the LHC written by Paolo Bartalini and published by World Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many high-energy collider experiments (including the current Large Hadron Collider at CERN) involve the collision of hadrons. Hadrons are composite particles consisting of partons (quarks and gluons), and this means that in any hadron–hadron collision there will typically be multiple collisions of the constituents — i.e. multiple parton interactions (MPI). Understanding the nature of the MPI is important in terms of searching for new physics in the products of the scatters, and also in its own right to gain a greater understanding of hadron structure. This book aims at providing a pedagogical introduction and a comprehensive review of different research lines linked by an involvement of MPI phenomena. It is written by pioneers as well as young leading scientists, and reviews both experimental findings and theoretical developments, discussing also the remaining open issues.
