Book Synopsis Spectral Methods for Time-Dependent Problems by : Jan S. Hesthaven
Download or read book Spectral Methods for Time-Dependent Problems written by Jan S. Hesthaven and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral methods are well-suited to solve problems modeled by time-dependent partial differential equations: they are fast, efficient and accurate and widely used by mathematicians and practitioners. This class-tested 2007 introduction, the first on the subject, is ideal for graduate courses, or self-study. The authors describe the basic theory of spectral methods, allowing the reader to understand the techniques through numerous examples as well as more rigorous developments. They provide a detailed treatment of methods based on Fourier expansions and orthogonal polynomials (including discussions of stability, boundary conditions, filtering, and the extension from the linear to the nonlinear situation). Computational solution techniques for integration in time are dealt with by Runge-Kutta type methods. Several chapters are devoted to material not previously covered in book form, including stability theory for polynomial methods, techniques for problems with discontinuous solutions, round-off errors and the formulation of spectral methods on general grids. These will be especially helpful for practitioners.

Book Synopsis Pseudospectral Simulations of 2D Flow Past ADimpled Cylinder by : Marina Kotovshchikova
Download or read book Pseudospectral Simulations of 2D Flow Past ADimpled Cylinder written by Marina Kotovshchikova and published by . This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral methods have a long history of application to fluid flow simulations. Their main advantages are high-order accuracy and convergence properties. The basic spectral methods only work on rectangular or circular domains. A very important and active research area is to adapt spectral methods for domains with complex boundary. In this monograph the application of pseudospectral (PS) method to viscous flow over a two-dimensional cylinder with dimples on the boundary is presented. By using a series of coordinate transformations, the exterior domain is mapped to the interior of the unit disk. Then the Fourier-Chebyshev PS approximation is applied to the transformed system of partial differential equations. Both steady and unsteady solutions are discussed. This monograph should be useful to applied mathematicians and engineers interested in high-order methods for fluid flow simulations in irregular domains.

Book Synopsis A Practical Guide to Pseudospectral Methods by : Bengt Fornberg
Download or read book A Practical Guide to Pseudospectral Methods written by Bengt Fornberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, pseudospectral methods have emerged as successful, and often superior, alternatives to better known computational procedures, such as finite difference and finite element methods of numerical solution, in several key application areas. These areas include computational fluid dynamics, wave motion, and weather forecasting. This book explains how, when and why this pseudospectral approach works. In order to make the subject accessible to students as well as researchers and engineers, the author presents the subject using illustrations, examples, heuristic explanations, and algorithms rather than rigorous theoretical arguments. This book will be of interest to graduate students, scientists, and engineers interested in applying pseudospectral methods to real problems.

Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics, Second Edition, is a comprehensive and in-depth study of the physics of the Earth beyond what any geophysics text has provided previously. Thoroughly revised and updated, it provides fundamental and state-of-the-art discussion of all aspects of geophysics. A highlight of the second edition is a new volume on Near Surface Geophysics that discusses the role of geophysics in the exploitation and conservation of natural resources and the assessment of degradation of natural systems by pollution. Additional features include new material in the Planets and Moon, Mantle Dynamics, Core Dynamics, Crustal and Lithosphere Dynamics, Evolution of the Earth, and Geodesy volumes. New material is also presented on the uses of Earth gravity measurements. This title is essential for professionals, researchers, professors, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of Geophysics and Earth system science. Comprehensive and detailed coverage of all aspects of geophysics Fundamental and state-of-the-art discussions of all research topics Integration of topics into a coherent whole
