Book excerpt: Heat transfer measurements were made on a complex scaled wind tunnel model containing 400 miniature discrete sensors in Hypersonic Wind Tunnels B and C at the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC). This test program was significant for a number of reasons which, when combined, have led to the development of a new test capability at the AEDC. First and foremost is the large number of simultaneous thermal measurements made on the wind tunnel test model. The large number of simultaneous measurements on a single test model was primarily driven by the customer's desire to conduct the test program in the most cost effective manner. This request was translated into a system to obtain high quality test data points in the least amount of air on time and to make heat transfer measurements on all surfaces of a very complex model. The measurements were made on relatively flat surfaces, wing leading edges, and thin tip fin leading edges; multiple measurements were made on a wide variety of unconventional control surfaces and appendages. Simultaneous measurements on the wide variety of surfaces required the selection of a sensor which was highly sensitive, small, and could be contoured to small local surface radii. The sensor chosen for these measurements was the Schmidt Boelter gage. The capability to calibrate Schmidt Boelter gages and compare a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable and certified standard is one reason this sensor was used for all of the measurements. Since each gage needs the measurement of two thermal parameters to obtain the required measurement parameter, the simultaneous measurement of 800 thermal parameters was required. The previous data acquisition system in these hypersonic wind tunnels at the AEDC was capable of measuring outputs for only 112 Schmidt Boelter gages simultaneously.

The fields of application are vast, such as, materials science, life sciences and applied engineering. This book offers a collection of ten chapters with three major sections - relating to application of infrared thermography to study problems in materials science, agriculture, veterinary and sports fields as well as in engineering applications. Both mathematical modeling and experimental aspects of IRT are evenly discussed in this book. It is our sincere hope that the book meets the requirements of researchers in the domain and inspires more researchers to study IRT.

Book excerpt: Application of Thermo-Fluidic Measurement Techniques: An Introduction provides essential measurement techniques in heat transfer and aerodynamics. In addition to a brief, but physically elaborate description of the principles of each technique, multiple examples for each technique are included. These examples elaborate all the necessary details of (a) test setups, (b) calibration, (c) data acquisition procedure, and (d) data interpretation, with comments on the limitations of each technique and how to avoid mistakes that are based on the authors' experience. The authors have different expertise in convection heat transfer and aerodynamics, and have collaborated on various research projects that employ a variety of experimental techniques. Each author has a different view and approach to individual experimental techniques, but these views complement each other, giving new users of each technique a rounded view. With the introduction of this valuable reference book, the reader can quickly learn both the overall and detailed aspects of each experimental technique and then apply them to their own work. - Contains both basic principles and fundamental, physical descriptions - Provides examples that demonstrate how each experimental technique can be used for industrial testing and academic research in heat transfer and aerodynamics - Includes practical and in-depth examples for each technique, with comments on each experimental technique based on the authors' experiences, including limitations and trial errors with some examples of data interpretation - Combines classical techniques in aerodynamics and conduction/convection heat transfer with modern, cutting-edge approaches - Collates the information about various pointwise and whole field velocity and thermal measurement techniques in a single resource
