Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Gospel The Christ came to me one day that I was bowed down in sorrow over the sins and imperfections of our time. For in my youth I had dreamed of an ideal country, a Christian land, and 10, what I found all around me during twenty years of search, had so little of His Spirit that it seemed to me as a pagan land, where He was unknown. For, since my younger years, I tried to walk in His steps, as the shadow follows the substance, and, as I came nearer to Him, He came nearer to me, until He had His abode within my heart and was as one with me. When He abided with me and we had become more as one soul, when He had imparted to me some of His Spirit, He revealed Himself more and more. I had sowed in me the seeds of His Spirit and I reaped in return a consciousness like His. In time I became so as one with Him that I could almost see things as He would have seen them, and judge them with His judgment. Then we set out together in the walks of men, saw things as they were, and, in the silence of my conscience I heard His Spirit pronounce its judgment on our age and their shortcomings. I submitted to Him the burning questions of our time, our doubts and perplexities and, out in the world or in the silence of soul communions, He told me His opinions on them. He told me also of Himself, His mission and of the mistakes men had made about Him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Marvelous Work and a Wonder: The Gospel Restored Prefaces, as a rule, are not read, and we do not intend to bore the reader with any unaccepted matter. Perhaps, however, we may be permitted to observe that to arrive at proper opinions concerning any doctrine or denomination it is but fair that we reserve our verdict until it is heard in its own behalf. Rendering a decision previous to this would result in deprivation to self of the information sought, and do injustice to the subject considered. We are aware that time is valuable and that the sundry essential labors of life, engaging nearly all the attention, make it necessary that Whatever time there be to spare should be devoted to the most important questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels and the Gospel Such readers required no general introduction to the subject to ensure a patient consideration of the immensely important problems of Gospel criticism laid before them; and even now, when these papers go forth in book-form to a wider public, the majority of my readers will still be of those who take an intelligent interest in the subject, and who will approach it without pre j udice. They have the courage to think for them selves, and are, therefore, not to be deterred from reading a book because it bears the name of a Society whose intentions and labours have, for the past quarter of a century, been for the most part as greatly misunderstood as the work of all pioneers the world over in every advance towards a better understanding of the nature of things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recovery an Restatement of the Gospel This book is the product of thinking and ex perience, rather than of reading. It is not to be inferred that the author has not adequately in formed himself concerning the questions of fact involved, or that he has failed to read what others have said about the interpretation of those facts. What is meant is that the subject has been worked out in vital connection with the author's mental and spiritual development, and that his thinking has kept in advance of his reading. For this reason, as well as because of the wide range of the subject and the demands of a busy pastorate, the book has been in prepa ration during the past five years. It has been in typewritten form for two years, with an altera tion now and then to bring it more closely into touch with new conceptions of truth and the practical aspects of religion which a pastor con tinually meets. The thought in mind has been not merely, Is it true? But also, Will it work? The result of the waiting, with its theological clinical work and added reading, has not materi ally changed the conclusions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels as Historical Documents, Vol. 3: The Fourth Gospel My aim in this volume has not been, except incidentally, to throw light upon the subject-matter of the Fourth Gospel, but to ascertain - so far as can by way of a preliminary study be done, and needs to be in order to determine our attitude towards it from the outset in using it - whether it has a right to be treated as an independent historical witness alongside of the Synoptic Gospels, having drawbacks indeed in this character as they have, though largely different ones, but whose testimony cannot any more than theirs be disregarded. I am convinced that this right belongs to it, which in recent times has been and still is denied by many. As a far fuller study than any attempted here of the actual contributions made to our knowledge of the Life and Work of Jesus Christ by each of the four Gospels I may mention T/ze Four/fold Gospel by Dr E. A. Abbott. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and Its Tributaries My aim in the book has been to indicate how Chris tianity drew into itself many tributary elements, and in so doing transformed them, so that the result was not some nondescript composite religion, but a new and in some ways more adequate expression of the message of Jesus. The survey is limited to the period covered by the New Testament. My first intention was to extend it to the time of the Council of Nicaea, for it was in the second and third centuries that the fusion of Christian belief with contemporary thought was carried fully into effect. But the traditional View of the New Testa ment as complete in itself is not wholly artificial. In that first century the gospel was formulated, the forces which were to modify it came definitely into play, the task which lay before it was clearly envisaged. The subsequent period only wrote out again in larger characters what may be read in the New Testa ment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Concern, not only for the gentlemen who are thus placed by the pub lic in so very false a position, but for the com munity in which a state of things exists which can be in any way likened to that which is por trayed in that most ancient, but I am per suaded, most truthful record. Is it possible that there is such a man as Phernandiwud among us? I cannot believe it. I know of no such man. Do Pahdees, and Hittites, and Hammerites, and the sect of Smalphri among the Dimmichrats, rule any city in our land? Far be it from us to confess it. Can there be men among us, like those in the remote and long-forgotten land of Unculpsalm, who would sacrifice their country to the everlasting Nig gah? This naturally led me on to study more carefully the greatest work of the Pauline School, -greater even than the Epistle to the Romans - the Fourth or Johannine Gospel. I proceeded on the same plan which I had adopted in studying St Paul's works. First, I examined in detail the Gospel itself. Then I wrote a sketch of the results to which that examination led me. Finally, I turned to the modern literature on the subject, and by the aid of it corrected and expanded what I had written. I consider the work of Mr E. F. Scott, The Fourth Gospel, as the most valuable of recent works on the subject; and I have usually, though of course not always, found his View in accordance with my own.
