Form. Inflections. 126. The inflections of nouns in English are those of number and case. 127. As regards number, most languages distinguish between singular and plural, some having a third number, the dual. English has only singular (tree), and plural (trees). The singular expresses 'oneness, ' or else leaves the number indefinite, as in man is mortal, the lion is the king of beasts. The dual expresses 'twoness'; thus in such phrases as to use one's eyes and ears those languages which have this number would put eyes and ears in the dual. The plural expresses 'more-than-oneness'; in those languages which have a dual it expresses 'more-than-twoness.' Thus in Old English the plural we 'we' implies at least three persons, 'we two' being expressed by the dual wit. We have a trace of the distinction between dual and plural in the reciprocal noun-pronouns each other (dual) and one another (plural). 128. The most important cases in language generally are the nominative, vocative, accusative, dative, genitive, instrumental, locative. 129. The nominative is the 'subject-case, ' its main function being to mark the subject of a sentence.
