Book excerpt: The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is an accelerator-based short-pulse neutron scattering facility designed to meet the needs of the neutron scattering community in the US well into the next century. SNS is a US Department of Energy (DOE) construction project that is planned to be completed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory late in 2005. SNS is being designed and will be constructed by a 5-laboratory collaboration including Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The functional requirements for the SNS have been set by the scientific community and DOE. SNS will initially operate at 1 MW with one target station operating at 60 Hz and having 18 beam ports for neutron scattering experiments. The first 10 neutron scattering instruments are provided as part of the SNS construction project, and will be selected to span the types of science anticipated to be most important for this facility on the basis of input from the user community. This paper describes the process of selection and design of these first 10 instruments. The extensive R and D program to support the design and construction of these instruments and to help pave the way for future instruments will also be discussed. A set of 10 reference instruments has been developed to help establish the layout of the experiment hall and the interface between the instruments and the target station. This layout and some of the associated interface issues will be described. Examples of the design and performance of some of these reference instruments will also be discussed as an indication of the types of instrumentation involved and the new scientific capabilities that should be available when the SNS becomes operational.

Book excerpt: This work covers in some detail the application of neutron scattering to different fields of physics, materials science, chemistry, biology, the earth sciences and engineering. Its goal is to enable researchers in a particular area to identify aspects of their work in which neutron scattering techniques might contribute, conceive the important experiments to be done, assess what is required to carry them out, write a successful proposal for one of the major user facilities, and perform the experiments under the guidance of the appropriate instrument scientist. The authors of the various chapters take account of the advances in experimental techniques over the past 25 years--for example, neutron reflectivity and spin-echo spectroscopy and techniques for probing the dynamics of complex materials and biological systems. Furthermore, with the third-generation spallation sources recently constructed in the United States and Japan and in the advanced planning stage in Europe, there is an increasing interest in time-of-flight techniques and short wavelengths. Correspondingly, the improved performance of cold moderators at both reactors and spallation sources has extended the long-wavelength capabilities. Chapter authors are pre-eminent in their field Seminal experiments are presented as examples Provides guidance on how to plan, execute and analyse experiments

Book excerpt: The recently constructed Spallation Neutron Source at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is quickly becoming the world s leader in neutron scattering sciences. In addition to the world s most intense pulsed neutron source, we are continuously constructing state of the art neutron scattering instruments as well as sample environments to address today and tomorrow s challenges in materials research. The Dynamically Polarized Sample project at the SNS is aimed at taking maximum advantage of polarized neutron scattering from polarized samples, especially biological samples that are abundant in hydrogen. Polarized neutron scattering will allow us drastically increase the signal to noise ratio in experiments such as neutron protein crystallography. The DPS project is near its completion and all key components have been tested. Here we report the current status of the project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Alamos National Laboratory is proposing a new spallation neutron source that will provide the US with an internationally competitive facility for neutron science and technology that can be built in approximately three years for less than $100 million. The establishment of a 1-MW, long-pulse spallation source (LPSS) at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) will meet many of the present needs of scientists in the neutron scattering community and provide a significant boost to neutron research in the US. The new facility will support the development of a future, more intense spallation neutron source, that is planned by DOE's Office of Energy Research. Together with the existing short pulse spallation source (SPSS) at the Manual Lujan, Jr. Neutron Scattering Center (MLNSC) at Los Alamos, the new LPSS will provide US scientists with a complementary pair of high-performance neutron sources to rival the world's leading facilities in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron and synchrotron facilities, which are beyond the scale of the laboratory, and supported on a national level in countries throughout the world. These tools for probing micro- and nano-structure research and on fast dynamics research of atomic location in materials have been key in the development of new polymer-based materials. Different from several existing professional books on neutron science, this book focuses on theory, instrumentation, an applications. The book is divided into five parts: Part 1 describes the underlying theory of neutron scattering. Part 2 describes the various instruments that exist and the various techniques used to achieve neutron scattering or bombardment. Part 3 discusses data treatment and simulation methods as well as how to assess the environment of the sample (temperature, pressure, shear, and external fields). Part 4 addresses the myriad applications of small and large molecules, biomolecules, and gels. Part 5 describes the various global neutron sources that exist and provides an overview of the different reactors.

Book excerpt: Based partly on the original importers' catalogues and partly on the wide range of pieces handled by the author Bryan Catley, a leading specialist in the subject, this book covers a comprehensive range of art deco figures. Between the wars, an entirely modern style of decorative sculpture emerged which was a complete break with the heavy romantic late 19th century schools, and was totally in sympathy with the vibrant young society of the 1920s. The use of bronze and ivory for the great number of these sensual figures in no way obscures the the fact that many are of exceptionally high quality; add to this their sense of movement and rhythm and one realises that the large sums thay now command is a reflection of a discriminative international collectors' market. This new revised edition provides a comprehensive listing of the great variety and range of figures, of which there are still more to be found.

Book excerpt: In many areas of physics, materials and nuclear engineering, it is extremely valuable to have a very intense source of neutrons so that the structure and function of materials can be studied. One facility proposed for this purpose is the National Spallation Neutron Source (NSNS). This facility will consist of two parts: (1) a high-energy ((approximately)1 GeV) and high powered ((approximately) 1 MW) proton accelerator, and (2) a target station which converts the protons to low-energy ((less-than or equal to) 2 eV) neutrons and delivers them to the neutron scattering instruments. This paper deals with the second part, i.e., the design and development of the NSNS target station and the scientifically challenging issues. Many scientific and technical disciplines are required to produce a successful target station. These include engineering, remote handling, neutronics, materials, thermal hydraulics, and instrumentation. Some of these areas will be discussed.

Book excerpt: Since 1959, the National Research Council (NRC), at the request of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has annually assembled panels of experts to assess the quality and effectiveness of the NIST measurements and standards laboratories. In 2011, the NRC evaluated three of the six NIST laboratories: the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST), the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) and the Information Technology Laboratory (ITL). Each of these was addressed individually by a separate panel of experts; this report assesses NCNR.
