Book excerpt: Harry Parr-Davies was no more than a name to me until I saw the documentary play about Gracie Fields and realised that the songs Sing as We Go, Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye, Pedro the Fisherman, and I Leave My Heart in an English Garden were all composed by the same man. This set me about discovering more about him. Consulting the internet, I discovered a web-site and even more importantly was given Gabrielle Bell’s CD of Harry’s music covering the styles and sounds of 30’s, 40’s and 50’s I also gathered as many items of second sheetmusi and two vocal scores. After compiling a family genealogy I now start to collate my material into biographical form so I could explore the man and his music set against the times he lived in. I consulted local libraries for Groves and Dictionary of National Biography. Giving more personal detail were the archives in Neath and West Glamorgan Libraries . even more usefully I came across accounts of the 2005 Exhibition in Neath about Harry which Edward Beckerleg had mounted with the help of late Bill Hanks. I contacted them both and they were helpful. Sadly Bill died, but Edwardhas provided with copies of material on the boards he had done for the exhibition. Even more importantly, he posted to me CD’s of Harry’s music covering the styles and sounds of 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. He in addition, sent me a selection of his photographs concerning Harry to use in my book. (see those use in the list below.)

Book excerpt: The stories within its pages will attract not only social and political historians, but feminists, jazz fans, academics interested in African American cultural interchange, and general readers fascinated by the cast of characters who played and danced to the music, despite warnings from the pulpit that degenerate youth were destined for hell and damnation. Freedom Music will enable readers to learn of an innovative side of Wales previously hidden from history. The music appealed to Wales’ vibrant youth, and those not part of the mainstream culture of chapels, choirs and male voice choirs. This study highlights gender, misogyny and discrimination within jazz music in Wales. This studies focuses on the history of African American music in Wales, Welsh women’s contribution to jazz in Wales. Cultural innovation by women entrepreneurs during and from the First World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside the Music of Brian Wilson is, as author Phillip Lambert writes in the prologue "completely, and intensely, focused on the music of Brian Wilson, on the musical essence of his songs and the aesthetic value of his artistic achievements. It acknowledges the familiar biographical contexts of his songs, but it tells completely new stories about the birth and evolution of his musical ideas, identifying important musical trends in his work, heretofore undisclosed inter-song connections within his music, or between his music and that of others, and the nature and extent of his artistry. It aims not just to identify great songs, but to explain exactly what makes them so." Lambert, a renowned musicologist, brings to this work to life with both his professional expertise and an infectious personal appreciation of the power of pop music. His clear, engaging tone and accessible writing style allows even a musically inexperienced reader to follow him as he traces Wilson's musical evolution, with a particular focus on the years leading up to the writing and recording of Pet Sounds and SMiLE, albums which many consider to be the masterpieces of his oeuvre. Inside the Music of Brian Wilson is the definitive book on Wilson's music and is essential reading for fans of Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys, and great pop music. Includes THREE amazing Appendixes: Appendix 1: Brian Wilson Song Chronology* Appendix 2: Four Freshmen Albums, 1955-1961 Appendix 3: Favorite Songs and Influences Through 1961 *The most complete song chronology ever published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late eighteenth century, a musical–cultural phenomenon swept the globe. The English square piano—invented in the early 1760s by an entrepreneurial German guitar maker in London—not only became an indispensable part of social life, but also inspired the creation of an expressive and scintillating repertoire. Square pianos reinforced music as life’s counterpoint, and were played by royalty, by musicians of the highest calibre and by aspiring amateurs alike. On Sunday, 13 May 1787, a square piano departed from Portsmouth on board the Sirius, the flagship of the First Fleet, bound for Botany Bay. Who made the First Fleet piano, and when was it made? Who owned it? Who played it, and who listened? What music did the instrument sound out, and within what contexts was its voice heard? What became of the First Fleet piano after its arrival on antipodean soil, and who played a part in the instrument’s subsequent history? Two extant instruments contend for the title ‘First Fleet piano’; which of these made the epic journey to Botany Bay in 1787–88? The First Fleet Piano: A Musician’s View answers these questions, and provides tantalising glimpses of social and cultural life both in Georgian England and in the early colony at Sydney Cove. The First Fleet piano is placed within the musical and social contexts for which it was created, and narratives of the individuals whose lives have been touched by the instrument are woven together into an account of the First Fleet piano’s conjunction with the forces of history. View ‘The First Fleet Piano: Volume Two Appendices’. Note: Volume 1 and 2 are sold as a set ($180 for both) and cannot be purchased separately.

Book excerpt: The saturation of the English-speaking world with psychoanalytic concepts was due largely to one brilliant analyst, Ernest Jones. As Freud's disciple, colleague, and biographer-and the man who rescued Freud from the Nazis-he led the international psychoanalytic movement, shifting its vortex from Vienna to London and spreading its influence to Toronto, New York, and Boston. While negotiating the ferocious politics of the movement, Jones also managed an imposing series of liaisons, including an heiress and her maid, analysands, and a “Druid Bride.” Unlike Freud, he never had to wonder, “What do women want?”
