Book excerpt: In 2008 the USCCB published a curriculum framework for high school religious education curricula entitled Doctrinal Elements of Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age (Framework). Since the Framework's release, publishers have adapted its doctrinal tenants to textbooks and catechetical materials for use within high schools and parishes. Those textbooks and catechetical materials that the USCCB have found to be in conformity with the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church are in the process of being adopted and integrated into the religious education curricula of Catholic high schools across the country. Since its publication, little research has been conducted to find out how curriculum based on it has being implemented, and where religion teachers draw inspiration for developing their instructional methods with which to teach its contents. This multiple case study investigation provides a rich description of the instructional methodologies Catholic high school religion teachers use to implement the Framework and seeks to uncover whether there is any commonality among the cases. The study compares both the instructional methods and the influences religion teachers attribute for developing instructional methods. Three specific influences are examined in this study: formal education, professional development, and school environment. The instructional methods observed during this study were analyzed drawing from both catechetical and educational scholarship, and when compared across cases, reflect that the most commonly observed instructional methods rely on technology, and utilize group learning or human experience. In order to develop these instructional methods religion teachers relied primarily on their formal education. As a result, this study concludes that religion teacher participants contribute a wealth of resources for implementing the Framework, but could be better supported through formal education designed specifically to support the Framework's overarching goals.

Book excerpt: Although Catholic schools are the largest sector of the national private and faith-based educational market, the overall student enrollment in Catholic K-12 schools has steadily declined. In order for Catholic schools to remain sustainable and competitive among the many different educational options in the twenty-first century, they must set themselves apart from other schools by offering unique learning opportunities that support twenty-first century education while promoting Catholic educational values. Recognizing the need for updated teaching practices, balanced pedagogy with Catholic educational values, and focused research on Catholic education, this two-year multiple-case study explored the instructional practices of eight middle level Catholic teachers during an initiative focused on shifting instructional strategies to support twenty-first century education supported by educational technology integration. Teaching practices were documented through participant observations, interviews, survey, and historical and field evidence. Data illuminated much variability in teachers' interpretations of twenty-first century education, classroom practice, and levels of technology integration. All teachers encouraged creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration in their instruction, however these specific domains of learning were primarily supported through an emphasis on lower order cognitive skills and processes. Although evidence suggested consistent technology integration in classrooms, technology was primarily used to substitute or augment instruction as opposed to the transformation of teaching and learning to support twenty-first century education. Data also revealed a balance between Catholic educational values and new teaching pedagogies except in Religion classes or instruction. This finding suggested content subject culture was a confounding aspect to instructional practices. This study highlights suggestions for teacher practice that include rethinking the purpose and structure of assessment, balancing personal opinions of technology with twenty-first century instruction, and shifting teacher-student classroom roles to foster teaching and learning environments that support creativity. Furthermore, additional implications for teachers and policy makers center on collaboration as a model for student learning, and to promote a shared vision for Catholic education in the twenty-first century. The implications for future research focus on expanding the study to include school level influencing factors and participants, centering on Religion class as the context, and the inclusion of students' perspectives.

Book excerpt: This inquiry is based on a case study in a Catholic secondary school in Ontario, Canada, from 2015 to 2017, focused on perceptions of the work of teachers, as well as understandings of their role and place in society. It highlights the beliefs of various stakeholders - teachers themselves, students, parents, the broader community - and the struggles related to these beliefs, regarding the work of teachers, at a time when elements of the neo-liberal agenda are increasingly at the forefront. Indeed, the main research question is: how do I better understand the place, work and impact of teachers in the tension between a morally-based ideology and the neo-liberal agenda? The qualitative case study is based on interviews and focus groups with over 30 participants related to an urban, diverse Catholic secondary school and works to illustrate the tension between the neo-liberal agenda and a social purpose that is more ethically- and morally-based, exemplified by publicly-funded Catholic education in Ontario. This inquiry includes elements of self-study and reflection: a personal analysis of the work of teachers in coming to understand how this work contributes to 'the common good,' represented throughout the dissertation through the counterpoint of researcher field notes and research journal entries with participant voices and emerging themes. The study's theoretical foundations are based on the concept of the social contract which underpins its conceptual framework, centered on three inter-related component areas: the social contract between teachers and society; professionalism, the professionalization of teaching and teachers' professional learning; and, the status of teachers. Key findings point to ethically- and morally-based teaching as open to possibilities and the good of all, in contrast to views of the work of teachers as technical, managerial and aligned to deterministic interpretations of the occupation, and society, which value more narrow perspectives of economic growth and market forces as preferred and inevitable. Those findings suggest that the work of teachers, and possibly all work, be undertaken with a view to 'the common good,' valuing the potential of all, as well as relationships, over more concrete, more easily measured, values, that prioritize subsistence over a fuller existence.
