Book excerpt: Forensic anthropologists contribute to the criminal justice system through expert testimony, the majority of which is related to skeletal trauma analysis and interpretation. However, a major gap in the current knowledge surrounding skeletal trauma has been identified, specifically, the data necessary to conduct comprehensive bone trauma analysis with established error rates are lacking. Current methods and standards of skeletal blunt force trauma analysis do not explicitly meet Daubert guidelines that require: 1) validated studies, 2) peer-review, 3) known or potential error rate, and 4) general acceptance. Traditional approaches in forensic anthropology for analyzing skeletal fractures are often designed around descriptions and possibly a broad determination of mechanism (i.e., projectile, blunt force, sharp force, or thermal). This approach offers minimal guidance for interpretation and can result in subjective analyses, thereby providing little value to the medico-legal death investigation. The analysis of skeletal trauma can present a challenge to forensic anthropologists because it requires expertise and application of scientific principles from other disciplines, including injury biomechanics and engineering. The focus of this research is to provide a review of skeletal trauma research methods, highlight the gaps within these methods, propose a multidisciplinary approach to skeletal trauma research, and demonstrate interdisciplinary applications of this approach. This collection of research highlights the critical need for large-scale controlled experimental bone trauma studies, designed and implemented by a multidisciplinary research team and utilizing human specimens. The critical need in skeletal trauma research is not necessarily in more research, but in better research; a need that can be addressed by a multidisciplinary methodology, which should be the gold standard of any scientific study conducting skeletal trauma research. The objective of this collection of research is to demonstrate how a multidisciplinary approach to skeletal trauma research can improve and impact scientific, academic, and criminal justice communities.

Due to the complex nature of these cases, it can be difficult to determine the cause and manner of death (referred to as equivocal death), particularly when differentiating between accidental and inflicted traumatic fatalities. Finite Element Modeling is a tool typically used to elucidate the etiology of fractures. This thesis utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to research the frequency of equivocal deaths among juveniles and the usefulness of FEM as a solution to diagnosing skeletal trauma. The first component examines the problem of misdiagnosed manner of death through retrospective case examinations in Pasco County, Florida, and the second aspect of the study examines the efficacy of Finite Element Modeling in trauma research by comparing two simple hemispherical models that approximate the neurocranium. The child fatality study examines 84 cases of child fatalities in Pasco County, Florida, and finds that the demographic characteristics of the decedents given their relationship to the perpetrator closely mirrored those findings in the published literature. Similarly, the age breakdown of decedents mirrors other studies on child fatalities, where infants and teenagers are most at risk of violent deaths. Most importantly, equivocal deaths were more present in the dataset than previously thought, and nine cases were possibly misdiagnosed in terms of manner of death. The modeling component of this study demonstrates that FEM may not be the most appropriate method of computational modeling due to the restrictiveness of the meshes that are used to create the individual elements in the model. Experimentation with meshfree modeling techniques that allow for more realistic fracture propagation are needed, as well as patient-specific modeling. Finally, skeletal surveys through direct observation and other modes of anthropological analysis in the autopsies of child fatalities are highly encouraged given the results of this study.

SSI provides income assistance for disabled, blind, and aged people who have limited income and resources regardless of their prior participation in the labor force. Both programs share a common disability determination process administered by SSA and state agencies as well as a common definition of disability for adults: "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." Disabled workers might receive either SSDI benefits or SSI payments, or both, depending on their recent work history and current income and assets. Disabled workers might also receive benefits from other public programs such as workers' compensation, which insures against work-related illness or injuries occurring on the job, but those other programs have their own definitions and eligibility criteria. Book excerpt: Advances in trauma care have accelerated over the past decade, spurred by the significant burden of injury from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Between 2005 and 2013, the case fatality rate for United States service members injured in Afghanistan decreased by nearly 50 percent, despite an increase in the severity of injury among U.S. troops during the same period of time. But as the war in Afghanistan ends, knowledge and advances in trauma care developed by the Department of Defense (DoD) over the past decade from experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq may be lost. This would have implications for the quality of trauma care both within the DoD and in the civilian setting, where adoption of military advances in trauma care has become increasingly common and necessary to improve the response to multiple civilian casualty events. Intentional steps to codify and harvest the lessons learned within the military's trauma system are needed to ensure a ready military medical force for future combat and to prevent death from survivable injuries in both military and civilian systems. This will require partnership across military and civilian sectors and a sustained commitment from trauma system leaders at all levels to assure that the necessary knowledge and tools are not lost. A National Trauma Care System defines the components of a learning health system necessary to enable continued improvement in trauma care in both the civilian and the military sectors. This report provides recommendations to ensure that lessons learned over the past decade from the military's experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq are sustained and built upon for future combat operations and translated into the U.S. civilian system.
