Book excerpt: The Fist of Metzor was once a beloved war hero, but even the legendary are susceptible to the power of a single mistake. And with the blood of ten thousand Metzonian deaths upon his hands, he was cast out by his father to walk amongst the swirling sands of the Desert of Lost Souls. After five years, and with a promise to his dying mother, his brother marches into the desert to find and bring the Fist back from exile. Yet no one knows that a darkness returns within the Fist's heart, one that intends to change the world. Cast out from the High Heavens, the fallen angels of the Order have cast the beacon of Light over Humanity for centuries. Under the wisdom of the Fallen Five, the former servants of Heaven have carried their mortal worshippers along Heaven's path of peace and prosperous enlightenment. But the Fallen have dark secrets and deadly enemies whom lay forgotten in the shadows. As one mistake leads to another, a young man and his sister will scramble with what remains of the followers of the Light as they attempt to correct the terrible mistakes of those around them before it is too late.

Book excerpt: “This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

Book excerpt: Thorlainen finds his mundane and generally pointless life disrupted by an apparent galactic catastrophe and is soon on the run from the totalitarian world of Tellus, the non-affluents, like him, have reluctantly submitted to for too long. His first impression is, he is the sole survivor but surviving brings mortal danger. He meets a young affluent woman, Chitmaa, caring for two intelligent children. Thorlainen is a Non-Commercial-Being but Chitmaa believes they must conjugate traditionally. Thorlainen agrees though he can see he is right out of his depth in this relationship and in his understanding of her motives. Normally a solitary character, Thorlainen's acquaintances snowball as they flee, and gradually he takes the lead, assisted by a paradoxical old man and a military officer, escaping execution. Unlike Thorlainen, the others have friends and relatives, who (if they are still live) are at the deportation area awaiting relocation. Thorlainen helps them, and then reluctantly takes command of a ship full of deportees: his nautical expertise becoming paramount, when it becomes evident they must try to escape by sea.

Book excerpt: Mistakes, in the form of bad decisions, are a common feature of every presidential administration, and their consequences run the gamut from unnecessary military spending, to missed opportunities for foreign policy advantage, to needless bloodshed. This book analyzes a range of presidential decisions made in the realm of US foreign policy—with a special focus on national security—over the past half century in order to create a roadmap of the decision process and a guide to better foreign policy decision-making in the increasingly complex context of 21st century international relations. Mistakes are analyzed in two general categories—ones of omission and ones of commission within the context of perceived threats and opportunities. Within this framework, the authors discuss how past scholarship has addressed these questions and argue that this research has not explicitly identified a vantage point around which the answers to these questions revolve. They propose game theory models of complex adaptive systems for minimizing bad decisions and apply them to test cases in the Middle East and Asia.

Martie's husband, Dusty, loves her profoundly, and is desperate to understand the cause of her autophobia. But as he comes closer to the terrible truth, Dusty himself starts showing signs of a psychological disorder even more frightening than that afflicting Martie... What readers are saying about False Memory: 'False Memory is an intense plot painted with achingly real characters' 'With this book the 'master of our darkest dreams' takes a fuller, more (in)human dimension. Book excerpt: John Brown: Sinner or saint? Freedom fighter or terrorist? He personified performance, acting when no one else sharing his antislavery views did. He embodied old-fashioned (even for that era) values of steadfastness, fervent religiousness, empathy for the less fortunate, and aversion to material wealth. Brown dedicated his life to abolitionismin deed as well as wordsince 1837, when in church he raised his hand and before the congregation swore his devotion, an oath he never broke. Significantly, many African Americans considered Brown the only white man worthy of their admiration, right up to the 1960s. The following play may explain why. Browns actions sparked the Civil War, some scholars say. He and his followers fought border ruffians in Kansas, guided escaped slaves toward Canada, and at Harpers Ferry, lit the Southern powder keg that, after Abraham Lincolns election, led to the secession of several states. John Brown: fanatic? murderer? liberator? Or just a plain, determined man? He calmly accepted his fatedeath by hanginghoping his execution would impel lassitudinous Northerners into action. And it did, epitomized by John Browns body. Read how it happened.
