Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ferroequinologist (noun) Someone who studies the 'Iron Horse' (i.e. trains and locomotives). From the Latin ferrus 'iron' and equine 'horse' + -logist As the British steam era drew to a close, a young Keith Widdowson set out to travel on as many steam-hauled trains as possible – documenting each journey in his notebooks. In Confessions of a Steam Age Ferroequinologist, he cracks these books open and blows off the dust. His self-imposed mission, that of riding behind as many Iron Horses as possible prior to their premature annihilation, led to hours of nocturnal travels, extended periods of inactivity in station waiting rooms, missed connections and fatigue. However, any downsides of his quest were compensated by the camaraderie found amongst a group of like-minded colleagues who congregated on such trains. This is a book that no self-respecting ferroequinologist should be without.

Book excerpt: Stepping over the gate into pastures afresh, The Birth of Autumn, the third full-length poetry book by Andy N, author of both 'Return to Kemptown' and 'The End of Summer' is a collection of poetry rooted in the exhilaration and the melancholy in the change of season that follows Summer. Told in sparse, tender brush-strokes, the book is as much a sequel to his previous book The End of Summer as a further exploration of life as well as the change of rural and agricultural rhythms of Autumn all wrapped in a whirl of emotions that follows at the end of one season that follows into the next. The Birth of Autumn is a book lost in shadows as the skies begin to darken slowly but also brings back beauty into your emotions, adventures into feelings and the leaves on the floor into a miraculously vibrant colour.

Natalie Roberson, a freelance high class call girl and aspiring airline pilot, is suborned to seduce him and help his adversaries cover up the story. Things go badly wrong and a corrupt detective is accidently killed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Raffald was an amazing woman, achieving a great many things in a short time. She was an author, innovator, benefactor and entrepreneur as well as a mother and a wife. From the age of 15 she was in service as a housekeeper to great families and at the age of 30 began her career in business. She began with catering, included a school and employment office before writing this cookbook which contains her own original, innovative recipes, giving us wedding cake, stock cubes, Eccles cakes and much more that we take for granted. She gained a huge reputation for her confectionery skills, while running shops and a coaching inn, giving financial aid to the only newspaper in Manchester at the time, producing the town's first ever directory in 1772, (only the second after London), supporting several poor widows of the area, collaborating on a book of midwifery, and having 9 children.

Book excerpt: For most people in the developed world, the ability to travel freely on a daily basis is almost taken for granted. Although there is a large volume of literature on contemporary mobility and associated transport problems, there are no comprehensive studies of the ways in which these trends have changed over time. This book provides a detailed empirical analysis of mobility change in Britain over the twentieth century. Beginning with an explanatory theoretical overview, setting the UK case studies within an international context, the book then analyses changes in the journey to school, the journey to work, and travelling for pleasure. It also looks at the ways in which changes in mobility have interacted with changes in the family life cycle and assesses the impact of new transport technologies on everyday mobility. It concludes by examining the implications of past mobility change for contemporary transport policy.

Book excerpt: Most of the characters in the book were real seventeenth century people, the majority living in Manchester, a town that did not have a Member of Parliament. Charles I was an autocratic king who believed that there was no one above him but God, and so when Parliament asked for a greater say in running the country he refused, leading to disenchantment in many parts of the country, especially in the South-East of Lancashire. When Lord Strange, the son of the 6th Earl of Derby, and the King's representative for Lancashire, marched into Manchester with his troops to demand the retrieval of his armoury, Richard Perceval a hand-loom weaver from Kirkmanshulme, a hamlet situated between Manchester & Stockport, pulled a Royalist of his horse and was shot. Lord Strange was later to be hung in Bolton for this crime, and when Parliament heard of Richard Perceval's death they announced that a 'Civil War' has begun. Jenny Grimshawe, a member of a fictitious family living on the Ancoats Hall Estate of Nicholas Mosley, Lord of the Manor of Manchester, was due to marry Richard Perceval, but on hearing of his killing, avowed to avenge his death. She cross-dressed, joined the Royalist army, was present at the siege of Liverpool, the massacre at Bolton and obtained revenge at the battle of Marston Moor, three miles West of York.

This book was released on 2017-07-02 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1772 Manchester was a fast growing town thanks to the rise in industrialisation. Elizabeth Raffald was a busy entrepreneur involving herself in numerous business ventures. She ran a shop, a cookery school, a coaching inn, a servant's employment register, wrote a cookbook and supported the local newspaper financially, wrote a manuscript on midwifery and so much more. She produced her 1769 cookbook, The Experienced English Housekeeper and saw a need for a directory of traders and notable people. Only 3 years after producing her cookbook she had compiled the first ever directory for Manchester, followed by a second a year later as the town grew and addresses were improved. She produced a third directory in 1781. After she died in 1781 it took another 7 years before anyone else attempted another directory. Elizabeth Raffald was truly a pioneer of her time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title, first published in 1984, focuses primarily on the early Industrial Revolution (c. 1780-1820) in the Stockport district. As the Industrial Revolution in England was the first instance of successful industrialisation, it can still provide many social and economic lessons and also furnish essential evidence for continuing debate over ideology and theory. Therefore, this title will be of interest to students of both history and economics.
