Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Month of Virtues for Healing and Healthy Living outlines thirty-one daily reflections on virtues that can lead one to healing and to healthy living. Warren L. Naegele, drawing upon decades of experience ministering to people in congregations and in clinical settings, has crafted acrostics that build upon the letters spelling each virtue and that present inspiring thoughts dedicated to promoting personal wellbeing. Each day’s reflection leads the reader to dwell on a particular virtue by sketching out the Bible’s guidance, offering the virtue’s related acrostic, reflecting on the benefits of the virtue, suggesting a prayer, and listing suggested scriptural readings. The most distinctive feature of each entry—the acrostic—uses the strengths of poetry to make its message memorable. So, for instance, “Joy” finds its expression with these lines: “Jesus came into the world as the / Only begotten Son of the Father. / Yes, He is the Savior of the world.” When you survey your life and find you have the desire to grow spiritually, to set out on a journey to healing, and to change your habits and activities to ones that promote healthy living, then A Month of Virtues for Healing and Healthy Living stands ready to supply a month’s worth of enlightening and inspiring reflections on virtues for living. Spend a month with this collection as your companion to help you progress on your spiritual journey toward deeply virtuous and abiding wellness.

She’s feeling good and has too much to drink. And although she’s engaged, she has sex with two different classmates. Nine months later, Naomi gives birth to bio paternity twins, one conceived by the white father and the other by the black father. Unlikely Twins tells the story about the four families involved, the church congregation, and the challenges stemming from Naomi’s choices. It shares the heartache, the embarrassment, the hurt, and the healing. In this novel, the characters must confront their assumptions about race in order to build genuine relationships—the nature of which takes a surprising turn. Individuals and families must set aside their differences to support one another, and in the process, they find this openness has allowed love to blossom. An uplifting tale, it sends the message to all to maintain an open mind and be accepting of others.

In chapters that follow a consistent format for easy reference, leading scholars from a broad range of disciplines review risk and protective factors for specific health conditions and identify what works, what doesn't work, and what might work (i.e., practices requiring further research) in clinical practice with African Americans. Historical, sociocultural, and economic factors that affect the quality and utilization of health care services in African American communities are examined in depth. Evidence-based ways to draw on individual, family, and community strengths in prevention and treatment are highlighted throughout. Winner--American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award

The idea that one is answerable to others besides oneself-to give others what they are due-places relational accountability within a frame of justice and serves to counterbalance the prevalent emphasis on autonomy in mental health and human flourishing. Welcoming responsibility to and caring about one's impact on others is basic to making personal relationships work over time. Without accountability, resentment and withdrawal from relationships would ensue. Accountability is also critical to the trust and cooperation needed for effective work with others. Moreover, accountability serves as a critical support to the integrity and wholeness of the morally virtuous person. Actively knowing to whom and for what one is accountable is clarifying in terms of connecting one's relational responsibilities with one's identity, direction and sense of purpose"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are we to care for our bodies and our health as part of faithful Christian living? Melanie Dobson excavates from Thomas Aquinas an answer for how contemporary Christians might live well in the midst of a very sick culture. Through a close reading of Aquinas's 'Treatise on Habit', Dobson reveals that the moral practice of habit does indeed include health. Thomas's keen understanding of the human person and of human longings supports the book's argument for a practice of health that directs us deep into the heart of God. Field research with clergy and missionaries offers concrete examples of the implementation of habits of health as part of the life of Christian virtue. The stories from the Clergy Health Initiative and Word Made Flesh missionary organization exhibit transformations that ushered Christian leaders into deeper love of God, neighbor, and themselves. In the end, the theology of habits of health means that our quotidian care of our bodies is not only faithful, but directs us into a life of flourishing.

We all experience the emotional suffering that arises when we’re prevented from receiving or giving love as we were created to. As we orchestrate our lives to hide our wounds and avoid the discomfort of having them irritated, we end up creating anxiety, unhappiness, exhaustion, anger, and a sense of meaninglessness. The good news is that God wants to heal us! In Finding Freedom in Christ: Healing Life’s Hurts, Dr. Matthew Breuninger examines the nature and causes of our wounds. Finding Freedom in Christ outlines a six-step model to help readers identify and remove the barriers to God’s healing grace—making deeper conversion possible. Ultimately, the goal of this healing model is to free individuals to love and serve God and one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Healing Virtues explores the intersection of psychotherapy and virtue ethics - with an emphasis on the patient's role within a healing process. It considers how the common ground between the therapeutic process and the cultivation of virtues can inform the efforts of both therapist and patient. The ethics of psychotherapy revolve partly around what therapists should or should not do as well as the sort of person that therapists should be: e.g., empathic, prudent, compassionate, respectful, and trustworthy. Contemporary practitioners have argued for therapist virtues that are relevant to assisting the patient's efforts in a healing process. But the ethics of a therapeutic dialogue can also revolve around the sort of person the patient should be. Within this book, Duff R. Waring argues that there is a case for patient virtues that are relevant to dealing with the problems in living that arise in psychotherapy, e.g., honesty, courage, humility, perseverance. The central idea is that treatment may need to build virtues while it ameliorates problems. Hence, the patient's work in psychotherapy can both challenge character strengths and result in their further development. The book is unique in bringing the topic of virtue ethics to the psychotherapeutic encounter, and will be of interest to psychotherapists, philosophers, and psychiatrists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first study to consider the extraordinary manuscript now known as the Carrara Herbal (British Library, Egerton 2020) within the complex network of medical, artistic and intellectual traditions from which it emerged. The manuscript contains an illustrated, vernacular copy of the thirteenth-century pharmacopeia by Ibn Sarābī, an Arabic-speaking Christian physician working in al-Andalus known in the West as Serapion the Younger. By 1290, Serapion’s treatise was available in Latin translation and circulated widely in medical schools across the Italian peninsula. Commissioned in the late fourteenth century by the prince of Padua, Francesco II ‘il Novello’ da Carrara (r. 1390–1405), the Carrara Herbal attests to the growing presence of Arabic medicine both inside and outside of the University. Its contents speak to the Carrara family’s historic role as patrons and protectors of the Studium, yet its form – a luxury book in Paduan dialect adorned with family heraldry and stylistically diverse representations of plants – locates it in court culture. In particular, the manuscript’s form connects Serapion’s treatise to patterns of book collection and rhetorics of self-making encouraged by humanists and practiced by Francesco’s ancestors. Beginning with Petrarch (1304–74) and continuing with Pier Paolo Vergerio (ca. 1369–1444), humanists held privileged positions in the Carrara court, and humanist culture vied with the University’s successes for leading roles in Carrara self-promotion. With the other illustrated books in the prince’s collection, the Herbal negotiated these traditional arenas of family patronage and brought them into confluence, promoting Francesco as an ideal ‘physician prince’ capable of ensuring the moral and physical health of Padua. Considered in this way, the Carrara Herbal is the product of an intersection between the Pan-Mediterranean transmission of medical knowledge and the rise of humanism in the Italian courts, an intersection typically attributed to the later Renaissance.
