Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Ideals of the Modern School ON October 12, 1909, Francisco Ferrer y Guardia was shot in the trenches of the Montjuich Fortress at Barcelona. A Military Council had found him guilty of being head of the insurrection which had, a few months before, lit the flame of civil war in the city and province. The clergy had openly petitioned the Spanish Premier, when F errer was arrested, to look to the Modern School and its founder for the source of the revolutionary feeling; and the Premier had, instead of rebuking them, promised to do so. When F errer was arrested the prosecution spent many weeks in collecting evidence against him, and granted a free pardon to several men who were implicated in the riot, for testifying against him. These three or four men were the only witnesses out of fifty who would have been heard patiently in a civil court of justice, and even their testimony would at once have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing in English: A Modern School Composition It would doubtless be presumptuous to imagine that this book, as a guide to the preeminently important school subject of learning to write English, avoids all the faults of its predecessors, or contains more than a portion of their merits. But unless a text-book is thought to possess some definite advantages over the others in its field, it has no excuse for being. Attention is therefore directed to the following prominent features of this elementary treatise on Writing in English: - 1. The general plan of the development of the subject is noteworthy, as proceeding from the study and production of entire compositions, in the first chapters, to the study of the next order of composition-units, well-made paragraphs, then to sentence-construction and, at length, to the smallest units of composition, words. Since it would, however, be unwise to complete any one of these great divisions of the subject before attending at all to the others, this general order, while it is kept in view throughout, is modified as shown in the Table of Contents; to which, and to its prefatory note, attention is requested. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Short Stories: A Book for High Schools For many years high school teachers have wished for books of short stories edited for high school use. They have known that most novels, however interesting, are too long to hold attention, and that too few novels can be read to give proper appreciation of form in narration. The essay, as seen in The Sir Roger de Coverley Papers, and in Irving's Sketch Book, has been a poor substitute for the short story. High school students have longed for action, for quickness, for life, for climax, for something new and modern. Instead, they have had hundreds of pages, long expositions, descriptions, leisurely treatment, and material drawn from the past. They have read such material because they must, and have turned, for relief, to short stories in the cheaper magazines. The short story is to-day our most common literary product. It is read by everyone. Not every boy or girl will read novels after leaving school, but every boy or girl is certain to read short stories. It is important in the high school to guide taste and appreciation in short story reading, so that the reading of days when school life is over will be healthful and upbuilding. This important duty has been recognized in all the most recent suggestions for high school reading. The short story is just beginning to take its important place in the high school course. To make use of a book of short stories in high school work is to fall in line with the most modern developments in the teaching of literature in the high school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Elementary School Practice Emphasis has been placed upon topics which the aver age teacher needs to consider. Experience in supervising several thousand teachers in three different states has been the basis for conclusions as to what topics teachers need most to know about and to have illustrated. Educational theory developed in leading American universities has been made use of. Originality is claimed only for the selection of topics and for the illustrations. The many teachers and supervisors with whom I have worked should by all means be mentioned as a chief source of information and inspiration. Recognition for materials taken from other books or magazine articles has been given throughout the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Americans: A Biographical School Reader for the Upper Grades Tell us about real folks. This is the request that comes to us again and again from children in the upper grades. In response to this appeal, the authors, in preparing Modern Americans, have attempted to give the pupils the worth-while things they like to read rather than the things adults think they ought to like. Those who have taught reading very long agree that the old time hero stories have always had a peculiar charm for pupils. But all the heroes did not live in olden times; they are with us today. Why, then, isn't it well to acquaint the children with present-day heroes? Young people in the upper grades are especially interested in the men and women who are actually doing things. They desire to study in school the persons they read about in the daily papers. Elihu Root recently said: It seems sometimes as if our people were interested in nothing but personalities. To bridge the gap between our schools and practical everyday life has become one of the chief concerns of the wide-awake teacher. Accordingly, in geography we are studying the industries about us In English, civics, and history we are devoting an increasing amount of time to a consideration of Current Events. All this is in the right direction; for, to create an interest in the men and women of the hour and the social activities of the day makes for an intelligent citizenship. Acquaint the people with the great men of any period and you have taught them the history of the period, says Carlyle. Know the past, if possible; know the present by all means. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School in the Modern Church "Sunday School" is the title to which four generations have been accustomed; no one who knows the field of religious education can doubt that the next generation will use a new title. The change to the name "Church School" is significant, however, only because it indicates developments in the scope and functions of the school. These developments seem to call for a practical exposition which will aid any school to enter into the fulness of its opportunities. These chapters on the ideals and the practical problem? of the new type of school are not written so much for the schools consciously marching in the vanguard, and those schools which know they are "new" and up-to-date as for those which, while accepting and following the newer methods, still must struggle with inadequacy of equipment, meagre support, and ignorance and indifference, resulting in a lack of team-play on the part of their churches. I have tried to keep in mind schools which I have known in suburban areas, in the country-side and in villages, the kind of schools that would include probably between eighty and ninety per cent of all the Sunday schools in North America.
