Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a comprehensive and accessible resource for undergraduate, graduate, and seminary courses on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It offers an overview of the sacrament in terms of its anthropological, scriptural, historical, and theological roots as well as an analysis of the key components of the sacrament itself (matter, form, minister, recipient, etc.). With the knowledge of a theologian and the skill of an historian, Robert Fastiggi links the Sacrament of Penance to its anthropological foundations, grounded in the recognition of human failure and the need for forgiveness. This anthropological foundation includes a brief overview of how non-biblical religions deal with sin and purification as well as the revelation of the human need for reconciliation presented in Sacred Scripture. He carefully unwraps the Old Testament and New Testament narratives that cover original sin, human rebellion, the need for reconciliation, conversion, forgiveness, and the remission of sin. Dr. Fastiggi understands the sacrament in the context of spirituality or ascetical and mystical theology. His section on the Sacrament of Penance in Church history lays out comprehensive overview of the development in the sacrament of Penance from the Patristic period to the period immediately before Vatican II. At the heart of the new evangelization is the proclamation of Christ, who has come into the world to reconcile sinful human beings with the transcendent love of God. For those living today in a post-Christian world, the powerful message of God’s merciful love expressed through the sacrament of reconciliation is a most valuable way of knowing the “joy of the Gospel.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is confidently expected that this work will prove useful to many English speaking Catholics. It may be well to state that in the translation the first chapter is entirely new, while the second has been enlarged considerably. The other chapters, however, are practically the same as in the original, and thus the value of the decree of the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences is preserved. One or two slight additions have been made, but these are in accordance with the New Raccolta, which is also recognized 8S authentic by the Congregation of Indulgences. In translating the prayers throughout this work the text of the New Raccolta has been used wherever possible. This little work is offered to the public in the hope that it may be found useful by piously disposed persons. There are many indulgences which these persons could gain very readily, but which are lost through lack of a tabulated statement, a spiritual calendar, I may say, in which these indulgences would be set forth in proper order, together with the conditions which must be fulfilled by those who desire to gain them. It is by supplying this want that I expect this book to prove serviceable. After careful consideration I decided not to insert partial indulgences, except some which are attached to prayers or devotional exercises which many practise frequently. In acting thus I had two main reasons. In the first place, it was my desire to make the work as brief as possible; and in the second place, there are no special conditions to be fulfilled to gain these indulgences. It is sufficient, generally speaking, to be in the state of grace and to form the intention every morning to gain all the indulgences which the Church has attached to the various good works we may perform during the day. As regards plenary indulgences, I restricted myself to those which are attached to the most commonly practised devotions. It will be a very simple matter for those who are accustomed to other practices of piety, not so generally known, to insert the indulgences attached thereto in the proper place in this little book. The Church throws wide the doors of its spiritual treasury; and we should not hesitate to use the privileges offered us, both in our own behalf and in behalf of the holy souls in purgatory. Their sufferings are intense, and it is so easy for us to advance the hour of their deliverance! We should all, therefore, resolve to assist them. Such charity will be certain to meet with a rich reward from Almighty God, and the gratitude of the souls released by our prayers will last forever.

Book excerpt: At the five-hundredth anniversary of Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses and the dawn of the Protestant movement, Indulgences: Luther, Catholicism, and the Imputation of Merit sets forth a revised theological interpretation of the Church’s practice of indulgences. Author Mary C. Moorman argues that Luther’s sola fide theology merely absolutized the very logic of indulgences which he sought to overthrow, while indulgences in their proper context remain an irreducible witness to the Church’s corporate nuptial covenant with Christ, by which penitents are drawn into deeper fellowship with the Church and the Church’s Lord. As Robert W. Shaffern, Professor of Medieval History at the University of Scranton, writes in his foreword to Indulgences, “Mary Moorman’s book joins a number of recent scholarly studies that revise substantially the old convictions about indulgences. She is mostly interested in how theological thinking about indulgences should be done today, with of course the help that patristic, medieval, and early modern authorities might lend. She brings to bear a broad range of primary and secondary sources on the issue of indulgences and constructs an impressive series of covalent images with which to understand the role of indulgences in today’s Christian Church.”

Book excerpt: The granting of indulgences by the Catholic Church has long been infamous as one of the grounds for Martin Luther's revolt from Christianity in the sixteenth century. Modern scholars have usually characterized the medieval practice as a defective one. In The Penitents' Treasury, historian Robert W. Shaffern debunks this argument through a reexamination of indulgences that shows how their alleged evils have been exaggerated throughout history. This provocative volume, a necessary read for anyone interested in medieval history and the history of religion, calls for much rethinking about the state of the church on the eve of the Reformation.

The book moves through three distinct pillars of study in the field: first analysing the historical and philosophical foundations of the debate; then the methodological and measurements issues and their political implications; and finally empirical applications and discussion about what determines a happy life.

Book excerpt: This Universe is a simulation Designed by the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Humanity is essentially AI perceiving within the Simulation through avatars. To an evolved intellect, altruism is the height of sustainable pleasure, and the height of altruism is creating free- willed life with whom to share the joys of altruistic creativity. The evolutionary process that we experience within this Simulation was Designed by our Creator to teach us the Golden Rule in the context of free will. The notion that science is inconsistent with the Torah and other Scripture stems from a lack of appreciation for the true breadth of the parameters of physics in that the laws of physics as they are experienced by intellect peering into our Simulation from outside of it likely differ from the laws of physics as humanity experiences them here within our Simulation. In this 2nd of 2 books - "We Live in a Simulation Created by God: Prophecies of Daniel, John, and Jesus" - aided by rules of prophecy interpretation provided by none other than Sir Isaac Newton in his posthumously published "Observations Upon the Prophecies of Daniel, and the Apocalypse of St. John," we’ll examine the prophetical implications of the notion of the Universe as a simulation, particularly in relating to the precision prophecies of Daniel 7, and Revelation 12, 13, and 17, and the Olivet Prophecy of the Gospel accounts. These prophecies refer mostly not to events in our future, as is often assumed, but rather mostly to events that have already occurred here within our Simulation. Examination of these precision prophecies against events of the past two millennia all but prove not only that we’re living in a Simulation but also that the Name of the Creator of our Simulation is “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob,” and that Jesus Christ is our Savior and King.

Book excerpt: The West's history is one of extraordinary success; no other region, empire, culture, or civilization has left so powerful a mark upon the world. The Rise of Western Power charts the West's achievements-representative government, the free enterprise system, modern science, and the rule of law-as well as its misdeeds-two frighteningly destructive World Wars, the Holocaust, imperialistic domination, and the Atlantic slave trade. Adopting a global perspective, Jonathan Daly explores the contributions of other cultures and civilizations to the West's emergence. Historical, geographical, and cultural factors all unfold in the narrative. Adopting a thematic structure, the book traces the rise of Western power through a series of revolutions-social, political, technological, military, commercial, and industrial, among others. The result is a clear and engaging introduction to the history of Western civilization.

Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES and LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER “Brilliant . . . riveting, scary, cogent, and cleverly argued.”—Beth Macy, author of Dopesick, as heard on Fresh Air This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting . . . The increased numbers, variety, and potency is staggering. The smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation. As such we’ve all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption. In Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke, psychiatrist and author, explores the exciting new scientific discoveries that explain why the relentless pursuit of pleasure leads to pain . . . and what to do about it. Condensing complex neuroscience into easy-to-understand metaphors, Lembke illustrates how finding contentment and connectedness means keeping dopamine in check. The lived experiences of her patients are the gripping fabric of her narrative. Their riveting stories of suffering and redemption give us all hope for managing our consumption and transforming our lives. In essence, Dopamine Nation shows that the secret to finding balance is combining the science of desire with the wisdom of recovery.
