Book Synopsis A Model–Theoretic Approach to Proof Theory by : Henryk Kotlarski
Download or read book A Model–Theoretic Approach to Proof Theory written by Henryk Kotlarski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed treatment of ordinal combinatorics of large sets tailored for independence results. It uses model theoretic and combinatorial methods to obtain results in proof theory, such as incompleteness theorems or a description of the provably total functions of a theory. In the first chapter, the authors first discusses ordinal combinatorics of finite sets in the style of Ketonen and Solovay. This provides a background for an analysis of subsystems of Peano Arithmetic as well as for combinatorial independence results. Next, the volume examines a variety of proofs of Gödel's incompleteness theorems. The presented proofs differ strongly in nature. They show various aspects of incompleteness phenomena. In additon, coverage introduces some classical methods like the arithmetized completeness theorem, satisfaction predicates or partial satisfaction classes. It also applies them in many contexts. The fourth chapter defines the method of indicators for obtaining independence results. It shows what amount of transfinite induction we have in fragments of Peano arithmetic. Then, it uses combinatorics of large sets of the first chapter to show independence results. The last chapter considers nonstandard satisfaction classes. It presents some of the classical theorems related to them. In particular, it covers the results by S. Smith on definability in the language with a satisfaction class and on models without a satisfaction class. Overall, the book's content lies on the border between combinatorics, proof theory, and model theory of arithmetic. It offers readers a distinctive approach towards independence results by model-theoretic methods.

Book Synopsis Advances in Proof-Theoretic Semantics by : Thomas Piecha
Download or read book Advances in Proof-Theoretic Semantics written by Thomas Piecha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-24 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first ever collection devoted to the field of proof-theoretic semantics. Contributions address topics including the systematics of introduction and elimination rules and proofs of normalization, the categorial characterization of deductions, the relation between Heyting's and Gentzen's approaches to meaning, knowability paradoxes, proof-theoretic foundations of set theory, Dummett's justification of logical laws, Kreisel's theory of constructions, paradoxical reasoning, and the defence of model theory. The field of proof-theoretic semantics has existed for almost 50 years, but the term itself was proposed by Schroeder-Heister in the 1980s. Proof-theoretic semantics explains the meaning of linguistic expressions in general and of logical constants in particular in terms of the notion of proof. This volume emerges from presentations at the Second International Conference on Proof-Theoretic Semantics in Tübingen in 2013, where contributing authors were asked to provide a self-contained description and analysis of a significant research question in this area. The contributions are representative of the field and should be of interest to logicians, philosophers, and mathematicians alike.
Book Synopsis Model Theory and Algebraic Geometry by : Elisabeth Bouscaren
Download or read book Model Theory and Algebraic Geometry written by Elisabeth Bouscaren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-03-14 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to the recent exciting developments in the applications of model theory to algebraic geometry, illustrated by E. Hrushovski's model-theoretic proof of the geometric Mordell-Lang Conjecture starts from very basic background and works up to the detailed exposition of Hrushovski's proof, explaining the necessary tools and results from stability theory on the way. The first chapter is an informal introduction to model theory itself, making the book accessible (with a little effort) to readers with no previous knowledge of model theory. The authors have collaborated closely to achieve a coherent and self- contained presentation, whereby the completeness of exposition of the chapters varies according to the existence of other good references, but comments and examples are always provided to give the reader some intuitive understanding of the subject.
Book Synopsis Institution-independent Model Theory by : Razvan Diaconescu
Download or read book Institution-independent Model Theory written by Razvan Diaconescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops model theory independently of any concrete logical system or structure, within the abstract category-theoretic framework of the so called ‘institution theory’. The development includes most of the important methods and concepts of conventional concrete model theory at the abstract institution-independent level. Consequently it is easily applicable to a rather large diverse collection of logics from the mathematical and computer science practice.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Proof Theory by : S.R. Buss
Download or read book Handbook of Proof Theory written by S.R. Buss and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-07-09 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains articles covering a broad spectrum of proof theory, with an emphasis on its mathematical aspects. The articles should not only be interesting to specialists of proof theory, but should also be accessible to a diverse audience, including logicians, mathematicians, computer scientists and philosophers. Many of the central topics of proof theory have been included in a self-contained expository of articles, covered in great detail and depth. The chapters are arranged so that the two introductory articles come first; these are then followed by articles from core classical areas of proof theory; the handbook concludes with articles that deal with topics closely related to computer science.

Book Synopsis Categories for the Working Philosopher by : Elaine M. Landry
Download or read book Categories for the Working Philosopher written by Elaine M. Landry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on category theory for a broad philosophical readership. There is no other discussion of category theory comparable in its scope. It is designed to show the interest and significant of category theory for philosophers working in a range of areas, including mathematics, proof theory, computer science, ontology, physics, biology, cognition, mathematical modelling, the structure of scientific theories, and the structure of the world. Moreover, it does this in a way that is accessible to non specialists. Each chapter is written by either a category-theorist or a philosopher working in one of the represented fields, in a way that builds on the concepts already familiar to philosophers working in these areas. The book is split into two halves. The 'pure' chapters focus on the use of category theory for mathematical, foundational, and logical purposes, while the 'applied' chapters consider the use of category theory for representational purposes, investigating category theory as a framework for theories of physics and biology, for mathematical modelling more generally, and for the structure of scientific theories. Book Synopsis Applications of Category Theory to Fuzzy Subsets by : S.E. Rodabaugh
Download or read book Applications of Category Theory to Fuzzy Subsets written by S.E. Rodabaugh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has a fundamental relationship to the International Seminar on Fuzzy Set Theory held each September in Linz, Austria. First, this volume is an extended account of the eleventh Seminar of 1989. Second, and more importantly, it is the culmination of the tradition of the preceding ten Seminars. The purpose of the Linz Seminar, since its inception, was and is to foster the development of the mathematical aspects of fuzzy sets. In the earlier years, this was accomplished by bringing together for a week small grou ps of mathematicians in various fields in an intimate, focused environment which promoted much informal, critical discussion in addition to formal presentations. Beginning with the tenth Seminar, the intimate setting was retained, but each Seminar narrowed in theme; and participation was broadened to include both younger scholars within, and established mathematicians outside, the mathematical mainstream of fuzzy sets theory. Most of the material of this book was developed over the years in close association with the Seminar or influenced by what transpired at Linz. For much of the content, it played a crucial role in either stimulating this material or in providing feedback and the necessary screening of ideas. Thus we may fairly say that the book, and the eleventh Seminar to which it is directly related, are in many respects a culmination of the previous Seminars.
