There must be few Primitive Methodists who are not acquainted with Mr. Kendall's smaller history published upwards of a quarter of a century ago, and with his "Principles and Polity of the Primitive Methodist Church." These little volumes, for many years, have been text-books for Local Preachers and for Ministerial Candidates. On one of my visits to the late Bishop of Durham I found these two books on the study table, and afterwards discovered that Dr. Westcott had read them with intentness and interest. The Standard History of our Church was written too by Mr. Kendall, and will immortalise his name. He was for nine years Connexional Editor, and in 1901 the President of Conference. The Book Committee felt that a smaller history was needed, bringing the story up to date. The present is practically a new volume. The historic imagination, the spiritual insight, the literary grace, which we all associate with the author, are all in evidence in these pages. The book has been written through love of the subject, with gratitude for the past, and with confidence for the future. The mention of Mr. Kendall brings his devoted and capable wife into mind. They sought also to obtain oral or written statements from such of the early pioneers who survive to the present time, and they are greatly indebted for such information kindly given by the Revs. W. Butters, J. Harcourt, J. C. Symons, M. Dyson, and Messrs. Witton, Beaver, Stone, the Tuckfield family, Mrs. Caldwell (formerly Mrs. Hurst), and many others. Their obligation is greatest of all to the representatives of the late Rev. Ifthere has been somewhat of antiquarian extravagance in this prevalent and in fectious spirit of inquiry; if it has sometimes harassed our public press with belabored controversies about names and dates, it is nevertheless pardonable, and indeed admirable, for the rich results it has afi'orded. The researches of Wakeley have especially given us facts of priceless value, and I cannot too strongly acknowledge my obligations to him. The occasional publications of Drs. Coggeshall, Hamilton, and Roberts deserve equal commendation. These writers, though differing on im portant questions, have illuminated phases of our history which formerly seemed hopelessly obscured. The two volumes of Memorials were but preliminary to a more elaborate work, The History of the Religious Movement of the Eight eenth Century, called Methodism, considered in its Different Denomi national Forms, and its Relations to British and American Protestantism, in three volumes. I know of no work on Methodism which proposed so comprehensive a scope; many of its necessary routes of research had never, to my knowledge, been explored; but if at any time I was bewil dered, and disposed despondently to retreat from the labyrinth of inco herent data and conflicting authorities, as well as from other and more vexatious discouragements, with which our mutual confidence has made you familiar, your genial voice has never failed to summon me forward with renewed determination.
