Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birth of Methodism in America: With Photographs T is nearly a century and a half since the birth of Methodism in 1 America. From that angel-guarded cradle has grown a family numbering about one fifth of the population of the United States. This wonderful growth from so humble a birth has attracted the attention of the world. It has wielded a tremendous power in spreading the gospel of jesus Christ throughout the land which has had so much to do in shaping our present civilization. The purpose Of this little volume is not to give the history of Methodism in the United States, but to give all the history that is obtainable Of the Father Of Methodism in America. This is best accomplished by publishing the oration and addresses of the emi nent Methodists who participated in the ceremonies on the occa sion Of the removal Of the remains of the Father Of Methodism in America, and at the unveiling of the beautiful monument at Cam bridge, New York, erected by the National Local Preachers' Asso ciation of the' Methodist Episcopal Church to his memory. The aim Of the publisher is to perpetuate the name of the Father Of Methodism in America, and his contemporaries - names quite unknown, perhaps, to many of the present generation, but names honored and revered by all Methodists familiar with the early history of the Methodist Church in America. The beautiful half-tone photographs in this little volume are priceless. The plates from which they are taken are the only ones in existence and cannot be duplicated, thus making this little book a historical souvenir of great value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Wesley and the Methodist Societies IN my book on john Wesley and the Religious Societies I have traced Wesley's course until that Christmas Eve, in 1739, when he met a small company of earnest people whose supreme desire was to know how they might be saved from their sins.' I have been so much encouraged by the reception accorded to my book that I have been made bold to attempt a still more formidable task. I hope to be able to describe the work of Wesley down to the time of his death. In this volume I watch him as he lays the foundations of the Methodist Church. They were so carefully and securely laid that, up to the present time, they have determined the character of the building erected on them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Methodists in the United States The following catalogue, arranged alphabetically under authors' names, includes but a minority of the volumes consulted in the preparation of this work. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and Ameiican Methodism. Bond, Emery, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities. Wesley marshaled forces for a fresh crusade. Asbury outdistanced his reli gions compeers. Simpson and Mccabe challenged to larger advance. Thoburn, Bashford, Lewis thought in terms of Christ's continental conquests. God gave to S. Earl Taylor, one of the secretaries of the Board of Foreign Mis sions, a vision of the greater work He had for the people called Methodists. After a tour of inspection to many parts of the world in company with John F. Goucher and other leaders, Taylor challenged the church to undertake more seriously the Christian possibilities of the generation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colored Man in the Methodist Episcopal Church The history of the relations existing between the Methodist Episcopal Church and the colored man - or rather, the status of the colored man within the Church - so far as known, has never been written. There are many cogent reasons why such a history should be written. From the time of the landing of a cargo of twenty African slaves at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1620, until this hour, the colored man has been the subject of much discussion. Touching his status as a man, there have always been two sides: one in favor of enslaving him, and the other objecting to enslaving him. Both sides of this vexed question have always been represented within the Church. The fact that there has always been a majority in the Church opposed to enslaving him; that therefore the Church early enlisted in the cause of his emancipation, - has kept up a continuous though bloodless warfare within the Church. Thus the colored man early learned to love Methodism, and soon large numbers were brought into its communion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymnal of the Methodist Episcopal Church: With Tunes This book has a superiority over our previous works of this kind in its exact agreement with the Hymnal in the order and consecutive numbering of the hymns. The preservation of this identity has greatly increased the difficulty of adapting all the hymns to suitable tunes. To accomplish this properly, Without unduly increasing the size and expense of the book, was not an easy problem; yet it is believed that very few hymns will be found without their appropriate tunes on their own or on opposite pages. In the few instances where this has not been practicable, a familiar tune is suggested, with its page, at the head of the hymn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Omaha and Suburbs Except dates and other guides to the earliest happenings are accessible, the author sets up no claim to inerrancy in the recital of the story of the progress of the local Churches. Yet, in the main, it will be found accurate in statement and faithful in theory. The intention has been little more than to gather matter and collate history, which, if not done now, may be almost wholly lost to the denomination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Methodism: Its Divisions and Unification The largest ecclesiastical family of the Protestant type in the United States of America is the group of Churches called Methodistic. Beginning in colonial days, it has, throughout the entire existence of the nation, been in touch with all the stages of national development, and, exerting a marked influence upon all grades of society, it has had a very direct part in molding the national life. While it held strategic positions in the cities, it ministered also to the rural regions, and its pioneer preachers followed those who sought homes in the wilderness, and, by their religious services, they saved the frontier from lapsing into barbarism. It was also a unifying force, as in the colonial days and in other periods of the country's history, its itinerant ministers, like soldiers under orders, moved from one part of the land to another binding the people of the different sections together by a common spiritual bond. So great has been the influence of Methodism upon the people generally that no one can thoroughly understand the history of the United States who is not fairly familiar with the movements of Methodism from its beginning in this land. As Wesley had much to do in making a new England, across the sea, so his followers on this side the Atlantic have had much to do with the making of the great American Republic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Every Methodist Should Know For many years the author has felt the need in his pastorate of a book briefly setting forth the things con cerning the Methodist Church which every Methodist ought to know. He has searched through the publications of the Methodist Church, North and South, and has failed to find such a compendium. He has found many excellent books carrying parts of the information needed, but none of them covers the whole field. The doctrines and polity of the Methodist Church have been so well stated that it would be impossible to improve the statements by an attempt to vary them in such a way asto make them one'a own. The author, therefore, desiring only to be helpful to the Church, has quoted freely the statements of others. The book, in fact, is more a compilation of authoritative statements of others than the work of the author. The liberal quotations are made and properly acknowledged from the Discipline, the Methodist Armor, The Mem bership We Join the Church, Stand ard Catechism, Fundamental Doctrines of Methodism, Things Methodists Believe, and The Law of God on Tithes and Offerings. The book has been prepared with a hope that it may be made a kind of textbook in the various organizations of the Methodist Church to bring our Methodist people into a knowledge of what all intelligent Methodists ought to know and thereby increase their interest in and zeal for the Methodist Church.
