Book excerpt: The first complete spectrum of neutrons from antiproton induced fission of Uranium has been obtained. Features of the spectrum are explained by three processes: emission of prompt ejectiles driven from the nucleus by pions in the intranuclear cascade, evaporation of neutrons from the excited nucleus before fission, and de-excitation of fission fragments. The temperature of the fission neutrons is about 67% higher than normal fission, indicating large residual energy deposited in the fission fragments. Hence, the fission process serves as a window into the excitation process itself. Results have also been obtained on gamma-rays associated with de-excitation of fission fragments after neutron emission. With respect to normal fission, the relative yield of gamma-rays to neutrons is suppressed, but the temperature of the gamma-rays is higher. Energy transfer by pi-zeros in the intranculear cascade initiated by antiproton annihilation at rest in carbon and uranium has been measured. The prospects for initiating multifragmentation and disintegration of heavy nuclei appear good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature survey was conducted to find information relevant to the annihilation of a low energy (sub MeV) antiproton in a heavy nucleus. Such information is important to the use of nuclear fragments from the annihilation to heat a working fluid for space propulsion. The particular piece of information desired was the fraction of annihilation energy that becomes the kinetic energy of charged nuclear fragments emitted after annihilation. The experimental and theoretical information located was sufficient to allow calculation of that energy fraction. Its value is about 10% for nuclei as heavy as silicon or greater and 20% for very heavy nuclei when the energy of fission fragments is included. Both values are less than a fraction of annihilation energy (38%) that becomes the kinetic energy of charged pions from the annihilation of an antiproton with a proton (hydrogen nucleus). These values are relevant to the choice of a working fluid that absorbs a portion of the annihilation energy and forms the exhaust for a rocket powered by antiproton annihilation. Althouth it is easier to couple the energy of charged nuclear fragments to the working fluid, the higher energy fraction for the charged pions makes hydrogen more attractive as the working fluid. It is therefore important to investigate possible means for efficient transfer of the pion energy to the working fluid.

Book excerpt: Research leading to the detailed characterization of antiproton annihilation in nuclei has resulted in three publications during the past year. We have reported on neutron yields and angular distributions from annihilation in uranium. This work is important to our SHIVA Star subcritical microfission measurements currently in progress at the Phillips Laboratory, Kirtland AFB. Proton spectra indicate the presence of multinucleon annihilation in carbon and uranium targets. This is important in determining the premission yield of nucleons in annihilation on uranium. The existence of rare hypernuclei formed in antiproton annihilation on uranium and bismuth has been observed. These states live a fraction of a nanosecond, and are of considerable interest to theorists trying to understand the binding of particles in heavy nuclei.

Book excerpt: In 1912 Victor Franz Hess made the revolutionary discovery that ionizing radiation is incident upon the Earth from outer space. He showed with ground-based and balloon-borne detectors that the intensity of the radiation did not change significantly between day and night. Consequently, the sun could not be regarded as the sources of this radiation and the question of its origin remained unanswered. Today, almost one hundred years later the question of the origin of the cosmic radiation still remains a mystery.Hess' discovery has given an enormous impetus to large areas of science, in particular to physics, and has played a major role in the formation of our current understanding of universal evolution. For example, the development of new fields of research such as elementary particle physics, modern astrophysics and cosmology are direct consequences of this discovery. Over the years the field of cosmic ray research has evolved in various directions: Firstly, the field of particle physics that was initiated by the discovery of many so-called elementary particles in the cosmic radiation. There is a strong trend from the accelerator physics community to reenter the field of cosmic ray physics, now under the name of astroparticle physics. Secondly, an important branch of cosmic ray physics that has rapidly evolved in conjunction with space exploration concerns the low energy portion of the cosmic ray spectrum. Thirdly, the branch of research that is concerned with the origin, acceleration and propagation of the cosmic radiation represents a great challenge for astrophysics, astronomy and cosmology. Presently very popular fields of research have rapidly evolved, such as high-energy gamma ray and neutrino astronomy. In addition, high-energy neutrino astronomy may soon initiate as a likely spin-off neutrino tomography of the Earth and thus open a unique new branch of geophysical research of the interior of the Earth. Finally, of considerable interest are the biological and medical aspects of the cosmic radiation because of it ionizing character and the inevitable irradiation to which we are exposed. This book is a reference manual for researchers and students of cosmic ray physics and associated fields and phenomena. It is not intended to be a tutorial. However, the book contains an adequate amount of background materials that its content should be useful to a broad community of scientists and professionals. The present book contains chiefly a data collection in compact form that covers the cosmic radiation in the vicinity of the Earth, in the Earth's atmosphere, at sea level and underground. Included are predominantly experimental but also theoretical data. In addition the book contains related data, definitions and important relations. The aim of this book is to offer the reader in a single volume a readily available comprehensive set of data that will save him the need of frequent time consuming literature searches.

Book excerpt: Part of the Physics in a New Era series of assessments of the various branches of the field, Elementary-Particle Physics reviews progress in the field over the past 10 years and recommends actions needed to address the key questions that remain unanswered. It explains in simple terms the present picture of how matter is constructed. As physicists have probed ever deeper into the structure of matter, they have begun to explore one of the most fundamental questions that one can ask about the universe: What gives matter its mass? A new international accelerator to be built at the European laboratory CERN will begin to explore some of the mechanisms proposed to give matter its heft. The committee recommends full U.S. participation in this project as well as various other experiments and studies to be carried out now and in the longer term.
