Book Synopsis A Mathematical Bridge by : Stephen Hewson
Download or read book A Mathematical Bridge written by Stephen Hewson and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009-01-20 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although higher mathematics is beautiful, natural and interconnected, to the uninitiated it can feel like an arbitrary mass of disconnected technical definitions, symbols, theorems and methods. An intellectual gulf needs to be crossed before a true, deep appreciation of mathematics can develop. This book bridges this mathematical gap. It focuses on the process of discovery as much as the content, leading the reader to a clear, intuitive understanding of how and why mathematics exists in the way it does. The narrative does not evolve along traditional subject lines: each topic develops from its simplest, intuitive starting point; complexity develops naturally via questions and extensions. Throughout, the book includes levels of explanation, discussion and passion rarely seen in traditional textbooks. The choice of material is similarly rich, ranging from number theory and the nature of mathematical thought to quantum mechanics and the history of mathematics. It rounds off with a selection of thought-provoking and stimulating exercises for the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cambridge, 1940. It is the first winter of the war, and snow is falling. When an evacuee drowns in the river, his body swept away, Detective Inspector Eden Brooke sets out to investigate what seems to be a deliberate attack. The following night, a local electronics factory is attacked, and an Irish republican slogan is left at the scene. The IRA are campaigning to win freedom for Ulster, but why has Cambridge been chosen as a target? And when Brooke learns that the drowned boy was part of the close-knit local Irish Catholic community, he begins to question whether there may be a connection between the boy's death and the attack at the factory. As more riddles come to light, can Brooke solve the mystery before a second attack claims a famous victim?

Book Synopsis Bridge to Abstract Mathematics by : Ralph W. Oberste-Vorth
Download or read book Bridge to Abstract Mathematics written by Ralph W. Oberste-Vorth and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bridge to Abstract Mathematics will prepare the mathematical novice to explore the universe of abstract mathematics. Mathematics is a science that concerns theorems that must be proved within the constraints of a logical system of axioms and definitions rather than theories that must be tested, revised, and retested. Readers will learn how to read mathematics beyond popular computational calculus courses. Moreover, readers will learn how to construct their own proofs. The book is intended as the primary text for an introductory course in proving theorems, as well as for self-study or as a reference. Throughout the text, some pieces (usually proofs) are left as exercises. Part V gives hints to help students find good approaches to the exercises. Part I introduces the language of mathematics and the methods of proof. The mathematical content of Parts II through IV were chosen so as not to seriously overlap the standard mathematics major. In Part II, students study sets, functions, equivalence and order relations, and cardinality. Part III concerns algebra. The goal is to prove that the real numbers form the unique, up to isomorphism, ordered field with the least upper bound. In the process, we construct the real numbers starting with the natural numbers. Students will be prepared for an abstract linear algebra or modern algebra course. Part IV studies analysis. Continuity and differentiation are considered in the context of time scales (nonempty, closed subsets of the real numbers). Students will be prepared for advanced calculus and general topology courses. There is a lot of room for instructors to skip and choose topics from among those that are presented.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Models for Suspension Bridges by : Filippo Gazzola
Download or read book Mathematical Models for Suspension Bridges written by Filippo Gazzola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a detailed and up-to-the-minute survey of the various stability problems that can affect suspension bridges. In order to deduce some experimental data and rules on the behavior of suspension bridges, a number of historical events are first described, in the course of which several questions concerning their stability naturally arise. The book then surveys conventional mathematical models for suspension bridges and suggests new nonlinear alternatives, which can potentially supply answers to some stability questions. New explanations are also provided, based on the nonlinear structural behavior of bridges. All the models and responses presented in the book employ the theory of differential equations and dynamical systems in the broader sense, demonstrating that methods from nonlinear analysis can allow us to determine the thresholds of instability.

Book Synopsis Quantum Mathematical Physics by : Felix Finster
Download or read book Quantum Mathematical Physics written by Felix Finster and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum physics has been highly successful for more than 90 years. Nevertheless, a rigorous construction of interacting quantum field theory is still missing. Moreover, it is still unclear how to combine quantum physics and general relativity in a unified physical theory. Attacking these challenging problems of contemporary physics requires highly advanced mathematical methods as well as radically new physical concepts. This book presents different physical ideas and mathematical approaches in this direction. It contains a carefully selected cross-section of lectures which took place in autumn 2014 at the sixth conference ``Quantum Mathematical Physics - A Bridge between Mathematics and Physics'' in Regensburg, Germany. In the tradition of the other proceedings covering this series of conferences, a special feature of this book is the exposition of a wide variety of approaches, with the intention to facilitate a comparison. The book is mainly addressed to mathematicians and physicists who are interested in fundamental questions of mathematical physics. It allows the reader to obtain a broad and up-to-date overview of a fascinating active research area.

Book Synopsis A Mathematical Nature Walk by : John A. Adam
Download or read book A Mathematical Nature Walk written by John A. Adam and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How heavy is that cloud? Why can you see farther in rain than in fog? Why are the droplets on that spider web spaced apart so evenly? If you have ever asked questions like these while outdoors, and wondered how you might figure out the answers, this is a book for you. An entertaining and informative collection of fascinating puzzles from the natural world around us, A Mathematical Nature Walk will delight anyone who loves nature or math or both. John Adam presents ninety-six questions about many common natural phenomena--and a few uncommon ones--and then shows how to answer them using mostly basic mathematics. Can you weigh a pumpkin just by carefully looking at it? Why can you see farther in rain than in fog? What causes the variations in the colors of butterfly wings, bird feathers, and oil slicks? And why are large haystacks prone to spontaneous combustion? These are just a few of the questions you'll find inside. Many of the problems are illustrated with photos and drawings, and the book also has answers, a glossary of terms, and a list of some of the patterns found in nature. About a quarter of the questions can be answered with arithmetic, and many of the rest require only precalculus. But regardless of math background, readers will learn from the informal descriptions of the problems and gain a new appreciation of the beauty of nature and the mathematics that lies behind it.
